Do schools meet the needs of the students that come out of our current system? It has been a question in debate for a very long time. As the pace of change in society excellerates it is imperative to reexamine if we are meeting the needs of students of the 21st century and it has become increasingly clear that we are not. Critics of the system write scathing accounts of how schooling is harming children and society by teaching conformity instead of the critical thinking skills they purport to teach. In response to the criticism, some schools in Canada have worked hard at reforms and have reexamined their basic practices in order to try and bridge the gap between what 21st century learners need and what is being currently offered in …show more content…
14). Regardless of whether or not one thinks the whole system is rotten, some of the results of the examinations of schooling has proven to be deeply unsettling. Educators and policy makers have been hard at work trying to bridge the gap between what is needed for 21st century citizens and how schools meet those needs. It will be a difficult path to reform but it is necessary to change in order to meet the needs of the students who are currently coming out of the school system today.
Reform is necessary to meet the needs of students in the 21st Century. However, large scale change is difficult to achieve and requires thoughtful processes in order to make sure that any helpful changes will actually stick. In Alberta, secondary schools are trying a project called “High School ReDesign” and it has been difficult to sustain. High schools are particularly difficult to change because of the interconnectedness of the system itself. (Milton, 2015, p. 13). The goal of Highschool Redesign is to “change mindsets” in order for learning to be more student centered (Alberta Education, 2017). The program is designed to put the student at the center of the learning and create a space for her/him to grow organically as a learner Some schools have created flex time during the day so that students can focus their time on the things they deem to be important. Peace River School Division in northern Alberta is one such school
As Laurence Powell Jobs once said, “It’s not that our high school system was not designed well, but that it was designed in 1906 when the country was just out of the industrial era. There hasn’t been a substantial systemic change the way we do high school since then.” It’s no secret that the current school system used in America is outdated and problematic. With a plethora of obvious issues in need of fixing, there are noticeable differences between America and other countries. Steps needed to improve the system can be implemented. Although times have changed, the American education system has become outdated and thus is riddled with faults. When compared to other education systems, it is clear that the American schooling system is in need of reform.
Over the course of many years, several things have changed, including technology, science, and people; however, our culture and idea of education have not. Some of these problems include teachers that are not being as valued as they should be and students who are changing both physically and mentally, but are still not being supported by our education system. The education system itself is also problematic as well, but it can be fixed with a change in our culture. Teachers and students are the base of the education system, and by not helping them, the system is not helping itself. Students are gaining new emotions and viewpoints, but the education system has had a hard time keeping up, even teachers are changing but are still undervalued.
As the bell rings, all the students jump up and race towards the school exit, looking towards the rest of the weekend doing whatever they want to do. A lot of students despise school, saying that it is torture sitting in a classroom writing on paper. The problem is, American education is broken. But how? We have to look at how the past American education worked, how the system is broken, and how we fix it.
In “Project Classroom Makeover” by Cathy Davidson, has many great ideas and facts about why should the school system should change. Although i may agree in some points as like the school system is working as a factory. I believe that changing some aspects like the way we learn things can and may keep the kids coming to school. For example, in my classes some of my classmates struggle the way the teacher teaches us so when they ask for my help i have tried different methods and it works. They start to understand instead of struggling but that’s because i didn’t choose to teach it the same way as the teacher. And with this experience i noticed that teaching the same way all the time won’t work students will be struggling because they learn in
Educational Systems Need Change In the anthology Identity a Reader for Writers by John Scenters- Zapico, Cathy Davidson, in her writing “Project Classroom Makeover”, discusses how the educational system needs a big upgrade. She also talks about how so many people in today’s society seem so disinterested in school. Davidson uses rhetorical devices such as ethos, pathos, and logos to get her message across to the intended audience of teachers, that the way schools are teaching needs to change.
Many may believe that the United States school system is flawless; that no other countries school system or organization is as advanced as ours, “just like our government.” Those people need to come into the realization that our school system is broken, we need to be realists and not dreamers when it comes to something as serious as our education. Our school system has not been putting in the needed or required effort to reach the goals of true education or a good education that we, as students, deserve. Schools have been cheating us of what we deserve. Although some may believe our school system is perfect, it is not; our school system is broken and it needs to be fixed.
Renovations must be done in educational systems to enable success for students in the changing world of today. In Herbert’s essay, he expresses that education is not improving in ways it needs to. These changes prove to be essential when looked at from the student and societal aspect. At this point, schools are not adjusting to time changes. Herbert supports this claim by stating, “The U.S. has not yet faced up
In America, the system of education has one of the greatest influences on the people of the country. From the common workers of the U.S.A, to the teachers, the entrepreneurs, and even to the parents of the students, everybody is impacted by our current education system. Most importantly, the children playing the role of the students are impacted the most from this. At the end of the day, these children are the ones receiving this experience. After all, it is the education that a person receives that shapes their future. It is the morals they grow up with, and most importantly, their educational experience at school. Sadly, this “educational experience” does not affect the students of the generation in a positive way. There are many flaws with
How can we solve this concern? Scott does not reveal this because there is no real fix. Even though we know the problem it would be almost impossible to change the system at this point, it would then mean to change our entire culture. If we did not have set standards to distinguish those who are proficient then, there would be chaos. This article leaves the reader with a sense of being incapable to change the educational system. However, this article was created to try to transform the “system”, but just allow us to be aware of this “conditioning”. “…do what you have to do in order to fulfill the requirements and move on” (Scott 156). This quote allows the reader to realize what the school system really is; a bureaucratic structure while, giving the opportunity to self-assess our identity and express with
School has been a part of the lives of billions of people for millennia. Educational systems are constantly evolving and taking on different forms throughout the world, yet schools across the globe seem to have held on to one similar purpose throughout the centuries. This purpose is to prepare young minds for success in the real world by building a foundation of knowledge in their student’s minds. While this is certainly a noble purpose, not all schools achieve this goal as successfully as they ought to. The high school in Little River, KS is just one example of how pure intentions can still lead to poor methods and thus a hampering of students potential. Put simply, the Little River school district should allow their high school students to
The education system in the United States could definitely use some serious changes. As of now, what we are doing is not producing the results it should and it would seem that it is time for a change. But the last thing this change should be is a federal regulation over national curriculum and testing, if anything, that would increase the current problem. There are numerous issues with the current education system to be addressed. One of the main focuses will be on its lack of concerns for students’ lives and how much they are truly affected by the education they receive. As well, some possible solutions to be considered for the future of this country’s education because staying on this path won’t lead to any improvements.
The education system in the United States has been a problem for some time now and it has yet been fixed. Of course there are somethings that cannot be changed overnight, but it is obvious that there hasn’t been any jurassic reform that the system desperately needs. The country needs to adapt to the student’s needs and attention to engage and connect with the students in the simplest way for them to learn and excel. What the country is doing currently is not getting the job done and there needs to be a change and it needs to happen
Our schools need to change, but who is going to initiate this change? Columnist Bob Herbert, in his article, “Our Schools Must Do Better,” makes the argument that the school system needs to change now if you want your children and their own children to have a fair chance in life. Herbert’s primary purpose is to persuade and convince the reader that our school systems needs to immediately change as delay will only serve to continue to promote low quality into the future. Herbert accomplishes this task through his caring and assertive tone. Using the reader’s personal experiences with the education system, Herbert establishes an emotional anchor point for reference and comparison as he delivers his argument for
Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, the American educational system has undergone much transition in response to our changing society. Though there have been many problems raised throughout the years in regard to what our school systems should be teaching our children, there have also been many developments.
Education reform is a topic that every student, parent and teacher should be interested in because it effects everyone in the community. Many different approaches to education reform have been tried, and even though they seem to work for the time being, there are always more improvements that need to be made. One of the best ideas that has been discussed in the most recent years is getting the parents and students more involved in the actual reform process. Many school administrators see a problem with involving students, even though they are the ones most affected by the changes within schools. Student’s opinions should be taken into consideration because they are the ones who see what happens inside the school and within the classroom, and are the most affected by it. Involving parents and students in the reform of their schools will improve the quality of education, improve parent and teacher relationships and reduce parent and student complaints.
