We will build barricades, and we will take precautions, but the rest is unbearable. We cannot bear the unbearable, either.” (Williams, 2008, pg. 70) A major theme that is addressed by the authors of three books covered in this class is that teachers sacrifice everything for their students. Teachers sacrifice their safety, their free time, and the amount of money they could earn someplace else to support the next generation of leaders learning to write their names. Sahlberg (2015, pg. 122) says that, “Teaching is commonly viewed in Finland as a demanding profession that requires superior academic qualifications, even for teachers of very young students.” In Finland, teachers sacrifice their free time to work hard for their students giving them the best and most up to date information possible. Williams (2008, pg. 70) expresses that teachers sacrifice to protect students from “bullies, and bad words and bad thoughts and bad self-esteem, and we do our best.” Williams went on to say that if there was a dangerous situation, for example a shooting, teachers do everything in their power to protect their students, even sacrificing their life to save their
