In today’s global world, the importance of English can not be denied and ignored since English is the most common language spoken in most countries. With the help of developing technology, English has been playing a major role in many sectors including medicine, engineering, and education, which, in my opinion, is the most important arena where English is needed. English is the main language in fifty-three different countries and is spoken by about four hundred million people according to “So Here’s What’s Happening to English”. With the help of two essays “The New Technologies in the World” written by Dennis Baron and “So Here’s What’s Happening to English” written by Jack Rosenthal, you’ll soon then understand how English is changing right beneath your feet. Consequently, English should be the medium of instruction at universities and everyone should learn English in the United States for the following three reasons: finding a high-quality job, being able to communicate with others, and a more wide access to knowledge. The first reason why English should be taught in Universities more and should be learned by everyone is so it can help someone find a more high-quality job. English is the dominant business language and it has become almost a necessity for people to speak English if they are to enter a global workforce. “In many countries, children are taught and encouraged to learn English as a second language. Almost 90% educational subjects are written in English”
In their opinion in countries that English is not their native language it has negative impact on culture and mother tongue. However, there are many reasons that demonstrated that use of English as a medium of instruction have positive impact on everyone’s life. As a study clearly says that student has the ability and skills to learn many languages (Begg, 2012). He adds that teaching a language in schools as a first or second language qualitatively vary because if all higher-study materials are in English so students to needs to be proficient in that language and that transition is smooth from school to college or college to university. In addition he clearly mentioned that” Junking English as a medium of education will only push us back”. For instance, there are many people he studied in English that now became successful in their life, Indira Gandhi, Jyoti Basu, Ratan Tata, Sunil Gavaskar, Amitabh Bachchan and a million of people who are leaders and successful (Begg, 2012). Therefore, all of these researches widely declare that English as a medium of instruction has benefits to improve educational system of and to develop a country that English is not their native
Many individuals come to the United States not knowing much of the country or the language. These individuals come believing, it will be an easy start once they get settled in. How can that be possible to start quickly? The main language in the United States is English, many come not knowing one word in English some are fortunate to know enough to get around. Imagine a person coming into the United States at the age of 14 and have to write a paper in English.
I knew from the first day I started high school I had no desire to go to college. My main goal was to graduate high school even if that meant doing only the bare minimum. Which is exactly what I did. I didn't know how important an education was until after high school. Once graduating I enrolled into cosmetology school and even there my instructors advised me to get a degree, which I still was against. After receiving my cosmetology license I began working at a beauty supply store. I found myself knowing what I wanted to say but not knowing how to get it across without talking in ebonics when educating customers. We had a lot of Hispanic customers and only had one employee who spoke Spanish. On her off days I would find myself trying to translate as much as I could from what I could remember from high school Spanish classes. However I spoke Spanglish, a mixture of English and Spanish, which left me feeling embarrassed and frustrated that I couldn't communicate like I wanted to. This prompted me to go back to school for a degree in Spanish and work on my English skills. In her article, “Spanish Lesson,” Christine Marin writes about being raised in an English only household despite being Mexican-American and learning the power of her Spanish language and being bilingual. In the article, “Homemade Education,” Malcolm X describes being street articulate but not knowing how to express himself how he wanted to through letters. Malcolm X and Marin have both overcome learning
Can you imagine that about 100 years ago that many educated people learned and spoke French when they met people from other countries? however, today a lot of people speak english when they communicate with foreigner. English has become a new global language that can not be denied. some countries use english as a second language and the number of students who are going abroad to study english continues to increase. Linguists debate whether English use is essential and worthwhile. Of course, at this time, English is dominant economically, culturally, and technologically, but it should be considered whether it is sustainable. Some experts and authors claim that English will dominate in the future, but there are many factors that suggest the decline of English.
Teaching English as a second languages it can be a hard task if the instructor does not have in consideration the four main skills that need to be developed by the students, and how to use the methods, technics and approaches correctly with each level and group.
English is the international language around the globe and they need to learn it to communicate with other and other countries. Learning English is very important to help them find job opportunities in the biggest companies because the biggest companies has their system and employees speak English so they can help other people through the international language. Considering English is being taught in almost every school nowadays, it is only natural for companies to hire English speaking employees because most people speak English everywhere. English can help students who are learning English to develop their relationships with people everywhere. Building relationships with people around the world helps us to obtain unity. Currently, there are almost 75 territories which speak English as a first language or a second language in most fields such as education, government and law. It is difficult to establish the right number of Englishes in the world as it is almost developing new varieties of English and new things are being discovered. Other than that, the internet and the media needed a shared language and that language was English. English is also the language of diplomacy and educated elites which made the English language even more popular in these domains and with people. Seeing that all the important domains and all the popular people in all different domains can speak English, that made people want to know learn it even more so they can understand what is going on around them and to help them grow in so many ways. That’s why English should be offered in all countries and be learned by people all over the world as it is a dominant language. As statistics show, English is the most leaned language all over the world in all different countries and schools, even some schools have English as a mandatory language where it is not even a first language in the
During the early 1500s America was pillaged by several European foreigners; for example, the Spanish, French, and British. However, there were tens of thousands of people already occupying America. When Europeans first invaded, over 300 languages were already being spoken and taught by over 562 different tribes. All of these languages were extremely complex and distinct, none of these languages being English. After colonization many of these languages became extinct, even today they are becoming less and less used; thus, wiping away what is left of Native American culture and language.
In my country, English is taught as a foreign language. The school that I was teaching is a bilingual school. They use English as one of instruction languages. However, in a certain level, the instruction language is mixed between L1 and English depending on the need of students. I teach English for senior high school students. Their ages are ranging from 13 to 14. The students in this context are first-grade students in senior high school. They are divided into two level. The one that I am preparing the material for is the pre- intermediate level students. These students can understand a simple text even though they do not understand all vocabulary. They read graded reader book every week and have a test every two month. This reading activity aims for comprehension and vocabulary practice.t
I would have never thought I would incorporate these many languages in my life, but I am glad I have, for they are very applicable. No doubt, learning a language can take a lot of time and effort, but their benefits outweigh their disadvantages. Monolinguals, especially in the United States, should become fluent in another language because of increased global communication, business and career benefits, and cognitive improvement.
Whilst it may be easy to think that language immersion is all about moving to a foreign country, the truth is that it is actually more about creating an environment around you.
Many students today struggle with their English skills because their parents are immigrants and they cannot teach them. In my situation, my parents started to learn English the same time I started to learn it. Elementary school was some very difficult couple years I went through because I had trouble communicating with the kids my own age. I have always hated reading or writing because I find it incredibly boring and I was no good at it. I did not start learning how to speak/write in English until I was almost five years old since both of my parents did not speak English. I met with Ms. Ramirez, who taught me English every single day until the fifth grade. By that time, I was fluent and her help was not necessary anymore. Throughout those five years, my parents were taking English classes, also learning from what I learned and they had decent jobs by the time I was in middle school. Of course, the first couple years in Elementary school were extremely stressful, but I was able to overcome it because I had someone by my side the whole time. My real struggles with reading and writing, hit me my freshman year and I will never forget that.
Approximately 27 percent of people living in Texas, above the age of five, know how to speak Spanish. Luckily, I fall under that percentage raised in a Spanish speaking home and enrolled in elementary knowing nothing but that language. However, it wasn't difficult for me to adapt to the custom English-speaking school environment because I rapidly learned to speak my second language and eventually began to write it as well.
Based on the numerous sources of sound data available, U.S. is currently out-educated. On the latest Program for International Student Assessment form 2015, the United States scored an average in reading and science, and below average in math. Results had been unchanged since 2000. U.S. scores are behind global leaders like Finland, South Korea and Canada. It is not a surprise that Shanghai outscored every other country, in all areas tested.
How do you learn how to speak English very fast? Is it possible to accelerate your English speaking ability? Is it possible to make massive improvements in only 2-3 months? The answer is yes. But of course, to make massive improvements requires massive intensity and effort. So, how can you do it? How can you improve super-fast? What do I recommend for this kind of goal?
Whether one wants to travel, find a job, or find entertainment, the English language will most likely be somewhat involved. This comes as no surprise since English has been referred to as the unofficial language of globalization (Corrêa De Almeida). Globalization is attractive to many because, “it is the interaction and integration among the people, companies, and governments of different nations” (Globalization 101, 2016). With this in mind many seek to learn English to gain better job opportunities or to simply have access to worldly entertainment. English as second language (ESL) education techniques now become the center of attention in order to satisfy the demand for effective English learning as a foreign language. ESL
