Did you know that each year, car accidents result in more teen deaths than any other cause? There is a way to prevent this and that is to institute the Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) in all states. This would help by allowing teens to earn driving privileges gradually. Instituting the Graduate Driver’s License will reduce traffic deaths among teens, and also gives teens the driving experience they need to operate a vehicle responsibly.

A graduated driver’s license allows teens to earn driving privileges gradually, rather than all at once. The text states, “For instance, some GDLs allow 16-year-olds to drive only during certain daylight hours; others require them to drive with an adult for a set number of hours before receiving a license.” …show more content…

The author states, “According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, states using GDLs have a 5 to 15 percent drop in teen accidents.” States that are using the graduate license have less teen caused accidents than states that do not use the GDL. These statistics prove that the GDL can and will work for those who choose to enforce it, and will lessen the amount of teen accident fatalities in the state.

With a graduated license, teens will earn the experience they need to become skilled drivers. According to the text, “Studies show that it is inexperience, not age, that causes accidents.” Think about it: could changing the age from 16 to 18 really prevent accidents or just put more inexperienced adults on the roads? Teens make up 7 percent of all drivers, but are involved in 20 percent of all accidents. The reason being is that many teens do not have the road experience necessary to make safe driving decisions.

The GDL is the best option for teen drivers, giving them safer a driving experience. Raising the driving age will not change anything regarding teen traffic accidents; it would only take away driving privileges from teens who are obeying the driving rules.
