A majority of people believe they could just walk into Sheetz on any given day and know how to perform as an employee. However, it is not that simple because a discourse community like Sheetz requires much practice to actually know what to accomplish. In the Sheetz community, it is essential for an employee to learn how to present exceptional customer service. Someone would need to learn by watching training videos and going through PowerPoints. After this is completed, an individual would be moved to the floor to learn how other employees and management perform tasks by observation. In this discourse community, I have seen and participated in the literacy that provides such a great workplace for customers and employees. Even though many people think working in fast food has nothing to do with literacy, they are wrong because there is much to know to work at a convenience store like Sheetz. The process of learning the literacy involved with being an employee of Sheetz first starts with the understanding that the customers are most important. In the beginning of training, an employee will learn to follow the saying “The customer is always right”. No matter what situation an employee comes to, he or she must make the customer happy in the end. To follow this point, an employee will need to see from the customer’s point of view. Doing this in the beginning enables the employee to do so as he or she has not gained the full perspective of all the hard work employees who have
A discourse community comprises of a group of people sharing a common and distinct mode of communication or discourse, especially within a particular domain of intellectual or social activity (Oxforddictionaries, 2017). Some of the discourse communities I consider to be a part of, include an Indian joint family, my peer group, high school education in India, the Apple community and education at Pace university.
Gee defines Discourses as a way of being in the world; they are forms of life which integrate words, acts, values, beliefs, attitudes and social identities as well as gestures, glances, body positions, and clothes. (Gee 278) I decided to do my paper on The World Overcomers Church because I wanted to learn how a church is considered a discourse community. According to Swale’s there are six characteristics that make up a discourse community. They are common goals, mechanisms of intercommunication among members, participatory mechanisms to provide information and feedback, utilizing one or more genres in communication, a specific lexis, and a threshold level of members with a degree of relevant content and discourse expertise. (Swale 321) I had to go to the church to observe to understand how it is considered a discourse community. The churches goal is to obtain happiness, values, beliefs of ethnic and morals to trust in god and have faith.
[The essential literacy strategy that I am using in the learning segment is identifying problem(s) and solution(s) of a story. This is evident through the Common Core State Standard RL. 2.3, which states “Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.”This standard is evident in my lesson plans when learners are identifying problem(s) and solution(s) in leveled text and their own individual books. They will be filling in a graphic organizer or creating an anchor chart with their findings this literacy is provided in my learning objective, when it states, “Learners will be able to identify a problem or problems by doing a picture walk of their short stories and flagging them with sticky notes.” Another learning objective
When one has authority in a discourse community they need to know how to use it appropriately. In Wardle’s reading she gives an example of this about a guy named Alan joining a discourse community within his workplace. As we know, Alan was a computer support specialist in the humanities department, who was young and just out of college. Alan left his first job because he thought that he was not granted any responsibility (291). He then found another job within the university working on computers. Right off the start Alan was making decisions as being the only computer specialist within the start of his new position. As Wardle states, Alan did not have to necessarily prove his knowledge like most people who start a job (292). The first mistake
Life is like a massive highway that have infinite routes anyone can choose take to reach some type of designated goal. Those various routes lead to distinct exits, where one can discover a group or groups that share similarities dealing with viewpoints, beliefs, or understanding towards a particular goal. These groups can be identified as discourse communities. According to, “The Concept of Discourse Community,” in the textbook, Writing About Writing, John Swales stressed that in order to be classified as a discourse community the group has to have all six defining characteristics. Swales emphasized, “A discourse community has a broadly agreed set of common public goals, mechanisms of intercommunication among its members, uses its participatory mechanisms primarily to provide information and feedback, utilities and hence processes one or more genres in the communicative furtherance of its aims, acquires specific lexis, and has a threshold level of members with a suitable degree of relevant content and discourse expertise” (Swales, 221-222). Keeping this key detail in mind, there is numerous type of discourse out there.
A discourse community is a commonly seen, but rarely identified language phenomenon. These communities can be found within any people group and in a variety of settings. Discourse communities often are defined as a group of individuals who share “a broadly agreed upon set of common public goals [have] mechanisms of intercommunication among its members,” “uses its participatory mechanisms primarily to provide information and feedback,” makes use of “one or more genres” that help the group achieve its shared goals. The group has also “acquired some specific lexis,” and has a healthy relationship between novices and experts (Swales 795). Discourse communities are groups of people who employ specialized terms and procedures to accomplish their particular ambitions. In order to identify these groups the observer must pay attention to the use of language within these communities. Language is a refined yet powerful means of communication. In order to analyze what a discourse community is, one must first determine the utility of language within that organization. The Starbucks baristas are one of the many unrecognized discourse communities. Starbucks has a special term for their employees who compose beverages: barista. Borrowed from the Italian for bartender, a barista is a person who creates and serves varieties of different coffee. The baristas are a unique discourse community because their goal is to be efficient and excellent through silent communication in
It is essential for adolescents to be able to continuously expand their knowledge and learn new literacy skills in order to adapt to the rapid changes and technology advancements in our society. Literacy is the ability to read and write, however, adolescents are expected to read and write at a certain level that will make them successful in today’s world. The ability to be literate allows people to accomplish many things in life because it improves one’s self-esteem, economic opportunities, and engagement with others. There have been problems with how adolescents use their literacy skills or practices in different communities and discourses. The way how parents cultivate their children at home can have an effect towards their child’s
Verizon Wireless is utilizing many ways to create its current culture. By implementing a mandatory training program for executives, the process of cross-train along with problem solving, and solutions being presented to a board, has set the example for training on all levels (Freifeld, 2012). Verizon has dedicated a plan to choose top performing graduates and enroll them in an internship, which aids in the employment of intelligent and career centered employees who also care about customer service. This training along with employee recruitment meets both the role modeling, training, and coaching process along with the organizational goals and performance criteria. Verizon has developed steps to hire and train at a challenging level.
Creating a literacy-rich environment is one of the key elements of supporting children’s literacy development. Literacy-rich classrooms tend to look quite different than the traditional classroom, covered in pre-made posters and arranged with individual desks in rows, and instead, allow for teachers to design their classrooms with their students’ needs in mind. According to an article on the Sadlier School’s blog, all elements in a classroom must be meaningful, intentional, purposeful, and engaging when creating a literacy-rich classroom. This means that classroom design is created in a way that it provides frequent opportunities to be exposed to text via environmental print, instruction, and hands-on learning as well as encouraging communication and collaboration (Sadlier School, 2017).
A discrete task and a chained task can both be used to support meaningful participation in literacy instruction. A discrete task is focused on one specific task such as indicated a yes or no response. It has a distinct beginning and end. An example from the video is when the teacher asks the student, which word means people that live near you and the student pointed to neighbor. It was a direct response. Another example is when the teacher said touch vegetable and the student touched vegetable on the iPad.
Literacy pedagogies have a developing and complex history in education, intertwined with social and cultural change and evolution. Each change has paved a new path for more significant approaches and strategies, which cater to diverse learners allowing them to create meaning and communicate more effectively. These literacy pedagogies brought out by the changes in education have both strengths and weaknesses. As such, educators need to explore and understand the four knowledge processes portrayed by Kalantzis, Cope, Chan and Dalley-Trim; didactic, authentic, functional, and critical literacy approach (2016), to be able to consider how they can influence teaching and learning so they are able to make informed decisions with regards to their students’ literacy learning. Teaching is becoming increasingly complex; this is particularly evident in the area of literacy. This paper will explore the four literacy pedagogies, their limitations and their strengths, and how they have impacted literacy learning within the Australian educational context.
Word’s have power and meaning beyond what they may initially seem. People have even dedicated their entire lives to stringing words together in such a way that a story is born. In doing this new wonderful worlds and thoughts could be shared. It is thanks to those amazing people that I have become who I am today, a reader with the ability to understand difficult concepts and share my own thoughts in a way that anyone could understand. Although I was able to understand the many parts that make up literacy it took years for me to master the verbalizing of literacy. It was within my speech therapy that I truly learned the value of literacy as a whole. Reading is only a part of what literacy really is.
Today’s world is changing every day, in order to keep up we must change with it. No longer will literacy only be considered good if you can write a letter properly. The work place has moved to the inform way. There are many advantages to informal literacy that many people fail to see. These assets are crucial in the day to day operations. “Informal communication is more flexible than formal communication because it is free from all type of formalities. (businesscom)” This flexibility allows business to
As the human resource development partner and training manager, I was contacted by JetBlue to develop a detailed lesson plan for their newest addition to their family. JetBlue recently hired thirty new reservation agents to help with their growing business. A lesson plan is a detailed plan of action to guide the trainer throughout the process that intends to take the trainee from step A to Z. This plan must be developed in advanced so that the trainer is prepared for the information that must be taught including: the content to be taught; how much time is required for each lesson; what method will be used to teach the information; what type of training materials are needed; the location of the training; and how the training will be evaluated (Werner & DeSimone, 2012). Before the lesson plan can be developed, information is needed related to the organizational history of JetBlue along with the job responsibilities for the reservation agents.
According to the statistics, a part of the employees are not highly skilled to take their position. It is necessary to provide training to improve professional service, especially to get more familiar with the shelves and products they sold in the store. After new recruitment, employees should undertake a series of training programs strictly to get enough skills betterserving the customers. Besides, the 7-eleven could hold interesting games for employees to get more familiar with the products, such as competition of finding the exact items.
