The Importance Of Perseverance

Everybody faces obstacles in life, whether they be small or big. How people react to the obstacles placed in their lives is what builds people’s character. This is where perseverance plays a key role with the help of endurance and ambition. Perseverance is the ability to overcome obstacles even when you feel failure is inevitable. It is running an extra mile when exhausted or staying up late in order to finish a paper. Perseverance is the ability to overcome emotional, physical, and even financial failure. It is never giving up even though “the going gets tough.”

How many times in life have you struggled but got through a difficult time? That is called perseverance. The definition of perseverance is “Steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.” Synonyms are persistence and determination. It originated from the latin word perseverare. Right now the world has been filled with natural disasters, from hurricanes to wildfires. Everyone that this affected has been forced to persevere through it because there is not much that they have the ability to do besides staying strong. In all of the nonfiction literature we have read there were many different examples of perseverance from many different people. I decided to choose three. For my first example Melba Pattillo Beals from “Warriors Don’t Cry”. There is numerous examples of the Little Rock 9 and her doing something despite difficulty. For the second example of perseverance I chose Maya Angelou. Through her life there were countless times that she was faced adversity and still achieved success. My third example is Earl Simmons (DMX) from the book “E.A.R.L”. He went through a tough time at almost all time growing up and he never gave up and achieved success. Perseverance creates success; therefore, when you stick through something you can accomplish what you want.

I believe that when you persevere you can accomplish countless things. When someone says perseverance, I believe that people automatically think about working hard and getting rewards after. While working hard is a big part in it, there is more to it. I am going to share a couple of stories that will hopefully change your mind about perseverance.

As a child, we watch many Disney movies and read about different stories. However, many, if not all of us have, at some point, watched or read the story of Cinderella. It’s a story of a young girl who is thrown into adversity, but perseveres through these challenges with a positive outlook and the assistance of some “magical” entity, and lives “happily ever after.” There have been many deviations of Cinderella in order to diversify the story and make it applicable to all of the today’s youth. Despite the differences in character names or story titles, the original theme of perseverance is maintained throughout the numerous tales.

Why do we push past the obstacles to be happy? Happiness is golden to America. Perseverance is the Great Depression. Making it through this frivolous time was an achievement. Farms were going bankrupt, and my grandfather was about to lose more than anyone.

“People will hate you, rate you, shake you, and break you but it’s not where you start, it’s how strong you are in the end.”~Unknown The quote is telling the reader that no matter what is going on in life, it does not matter as long as you end strong. Dictionary defines perseverance as “Doing something difficult in achieving success.” An synonym is “Countenance” An antonym is “Discontinuation” The common purpose is perseverance. Perseverance is important to literature by how the characters change over hard times in their life. In this world perseverance is shown by if bullied. Then stand up to that bully to achieve success through what people have done in the past. Another real world that perseverance shows how people give up because they are to afraid of rising up to make a change on achieve that next step to life. Maya Angelou is a girl that did not speak for five years because she thought her voice would kill people. When Temple Grandin was only four years old, she did not speak until she went to school and got help from her teacher and mother on her journey to define herself. The literature Warriors Don’t Cry is about how nine Black Americans went to an all white school. This is where their life got brutal until the last straw. The authors use nonfiction literature to influence the reader through perseverance by showing how much the literature grows from a start of brutal bullying, until the end where they achieve success.

By having perseverance an individual can truly change what they do and how they live. Perseverance is a virtue that allows people to keep going and not give up. And this allows for people to follow their dreams and makes a person

In life you have up’s and down’s, sometimes you have to persevere in order to gain control of your life. In Call Of The Wild, whenever something awful happened to Buck he had to decipher on how to adapt to certain things. For Example, he would have to adapt to the weather, food, and people. Buck also felt formidable with many of his owners, because they were big and he was small. In contrast, my mother had a difficult time adapting to Kansas other than other states and people.

Perseverance is a mandatory quality to possess. As a matter of fact, perseverance is a blend of spirit and determination. This skill instills motivation and drive into the hearts of others. One does not require special talents or great knowledge to be a vessel in which this quality can be observed. In her essay, First Job, Illiana Roman illustrates a life filled with hard work and perseverance through anecdotes, word choice, and sentence structure.

Many people suffer problems in the world today. This includes terrorism and tyranny. It includes kidnapping and hate crime. It can also be cancer and starvation. Many have lived through problems like these and told the tale because they persevered. Through Hillenbrand’s Unbroken, Wiesel’s Night, and Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, perseverance is emphasized the readers by writing about characters, whether they are survivors of the Holocaust, a prisoner of war, or family, that have to suffer obstacles that can potentially kill them if they don’t overcome it. The event call to action in my story is going to be showing a day when I’m at work and I’m talking with a client and they are telling me about how there son graduated and what he has done with his life. And Ill continue to talk about how I finally made the decision to go to Full Sail.

My close friend Ashwin Mohan had once told me his perspective on perseverance and I was curious to know how it has helped or hindered him throughout his life. His response would be different from that of my previous interviewee in my reflection essay, Kenny Varghese. Ashwin had told me that he viewed perseverance as a means to an end. As it was very catchy to hear, Ashwin would explain his phrase, saying how there are two successful people, one that is handed everything and doesn’t worry while on the other hand the second works hard and persevered through hardships to become successful. As students, it is impossible to achieve personal success without having a goal, or direction. The goal and direction that often propels us to achieve is perseverance. Perseverance is the ability to forge ahead despite setbacks that threaten to undermine all efforts to succeed.
