New York City’s old slum neighbourhood, the Five Points, was notoriously known for its vice and crimes. The first organized crime group in New York City was the Forty Thieves which was led by Edward Coleman, started in 1825, in the back of a grocery store. The Dead Rabbits were an Irish gang in the Five Points area, and are most known for the riot they caused in 1857. The Eastman Gang were a Jewish group in the Five Points area, which began in the late nineteenth century, and were the rival of the Five Points Gang. The Five Points Gang was another group, started by Paul Kelly and included future famous mobsters. In Five Points, where most of New York City’s crime started, it also started some of history’s most notorious gangs, and mobsters.
The New York City Subway System has an extremely rich and detailed history that dates to the late nineteenth century. Before the system that the public currently takes advantage of when they visit New York City, there were an extensive amount of public transportation options that were available to the general public. For example, horse and carriages, omnibuses, and trolley systems were all used as a means of transportation throughout the nineteenth century. Once the idea for a subway system to be built was introduced, most people did not believe that it was possible. However, they were soon proven wrong after Alfred E. Beach secretly built the first subway system that was used in New York City. Once people saw that subterranean travel was a viable means of transportation, it did not take long until the subway system that is used today to come along. The New York City subway system revolutionized the way the general public traveled throughout the city, and inspired other growing cities to build subterranean travel systems of their own.

The way people react to different environments reflect upon characteristics of their identity. These surroundings can ignite feelings and emotions, which may urge an individual to react and reveal traits of his or her personality. In Gladwell’s essay, a change in New York City was ignited when Bernie Goetz was asked for money on the subway by young men, who were later shot by him. Gladwell’s explanation of Goetz’s incident detailed how “The Tipping Point in this epidemic, though isn’t a particular kind of person…It’s something physical like graffiti. The impetus to engage in a certain kind of behavior is not coming from a certain kind of person but from a feature of the environment” (152). Gladwell claims that Goetz shot the men due to the graffiti and the environment, rather than the four young men who asked him for money. When Goetz reacted due to his environment, he was able to portray characteristics of his identity, such how he felt about his environment and how perhaps his background, may have prompted him to react. Goetz was a product of his environment because he allowed his environment to control him. While Goetz allowed his environment to control him, the women in Nafisi’s group broke away from their environment to create a new identity. In the world outside of Nafisi’s apartment, the government acts as a strict behavior which prevents the women from expressing their true selves. When Nafisi’s students come to her apartment, they do not have to adhere to all rules
A New York Daily News editorial “Dumb as a Doornail” commented “to contemplate this nonsense [of installing protective barriers on subway platforms] is self-evidently a waste of time and money” when that idea first introduced in 2011. The editorial also wrote that “the risks of [death and disfigurement] are far too minuscule to justify all the expense and effort”. Likewise, Jennifer Peltz in “After NYC subway deaths, barriers get new eye” reported that “the challenges [of installing the barriers into the long-established subway system] would be considerable” because of “the widely varying architecture” and “the different types of trains”. Oppositely, Peltz reported that Japan with a long-established subway system has managed to successfully

Rochester was the first of the inland boom cities created by commercialization of agriculture and the opening of new transportation routes after 1815 its economic expansion was inevitable. Being located at the intersection of the Erie Canal and the Genesee River allowed the town to use the natural water resources to operate the water-powered mills. This made flour the town’s main export reaching a peak of over 200,000 barrels of flour by 1828. Moving to New York after living in an anti-freedom, dependent and closed minded community for 22 years was the most encouraging thing I have ever made. Moving from one continent to another was a very challenging step to take, I think I am brave enough to do it, travel from overseas to an anonymous country. My journey began in December 2013 when I met my husband, we fall in love with each other and decided to get married and live together at his place in New York, - the city that never sleeps - the most overwhelming city, the city that is based on independence and hard work. The city that made me feel that I have to die trying not to die. My independent life started at the moment where Dubai airport announced that my flight to new York gate is open and I should go for boarding. It was the first time ever I leave my family, it was the first time that I had to carry my own back bag. I expedite to my flight that was about 36 hours of flying, transit, delays and waiting. Before that day I lived at my parent's house, where I had my own driver that drove me anywhere I want
On October 6, 2016 while traveling to Manhattan on the number two train, two gentlemen came on the train and started to sing several songs. Train performance has been a way of life in New York for almost as long as there have been trains. This is a way of living for people who have a difficult time finding a job on Broadway or for some who is just trying to make a quick change. It has become an unofficial entertainment center, in which a many sings, dance and other daily performances. This I took the time out to actually pay any attention to the train live performance. As I know I had a paper due for my music class.
Public transportation is serious need of a massive overhaul in this nation. We are in desperate need to catch up to the European standard of public transportation in this country. In Europe, citizens can travel across cities, bodies of water, and even counties with their state of the art public transportation system. Europeans are not nearly as reliant on cars and oil as the United States is because they have the much more practical option of taking the transportation provided to them by the government to where ever they need to go. They have set a model that the United States needs to strive for and meet in the near future.
Typical, it is 7:31 am Monday morning and I am running late. Knowing it will take approximately twenty minutes for me to make it to 8:00 am lecture on time, I grab my book bag hastily lock my apartment door and fly down the slightly stained cement stairs. In less than sixty-seconds, I miraculously made it from the third to the first floor without falling. I congratulate myself and hop in my old reliable dusty gray, 2011 Toyota. At last, I arrive to campus just in time to park in the closest lot near the School of Nursing building making it to my first lecture of the day with ten minutes to spare. This seems like a small and normal morning routine for some, for others who do not have
