The average, uneducated person believes that being a good reader and writer do not correlate, but through many experiments and research, scholars have come to the conclusion that in order to become a good writer, first good reading technique is needed. This skill can be very challenging to master. A good reader must not only be educated but also must obtain a sense of position in the world. Understanding what’s going on around them and to express empathy and in depth emotion while reading. Good reading and writing skills derive from reading indulgently in many different genres and reading analytically; then those skills gathered to mimic authors’ styles and to create a unique way of writing. When reading, there are two major ways of doing so, one of which, is out of want and enjoyment. When reading out of pleasure, it allows readers to make connections to personal thoughts and experiences. With these new flowing thoughts and background exerted from the literature they have read, a writer is now able to become a more intriguing story teller. Reading out of entertainment allows a person to “unlock” their inner creativity. “If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write.”(Stephen King 4). Not reading, and expecting to be able to write with great skill would be like a “musician who doesn’t listen to music (Heavenridge)” or perhaps a “filmmaker who doesn’t watch films (Heavenridge)”, the thought process of not having to read and expect good
This has helped me in my own reading because I now look for things like sentence structure. I find myself asking “what is the author trying to tell me with this sentence?” “Why is it so short?” “Why is it so long?” Then, when I am writing my own essays I can make that connection. If I want to make a sentence more impactful I can look back at how Roy Popkin achieved this in “Night Watch” with his sentence structure. Being able to make this sort of connection makes me and my writing stronger. It is also important for active readers to inspect the kind of vocabulary. Vocabulary gives the reader hints as to how they are ought to interpret the writing. If the writer uses fans or simple words it can indicate if the piece is directed at a younger or older audience, it helps with the flow of some writing. I try to remember this in my own writing, when directing my writing at adults looking at a scholarship entry verses to my peers. Similarly, a reader also should look at the writer’s tone, such as their word choice. The picture the writer’s word choice paints in the reader’s head helps to continue the development of their story. When it comes to my own writing, I have started to ask myself where I can add imagery. While looking for all of these things in other people’s writing and especially in professional writers work is difficult at times, it is much harder to
If you couldn’t read or write, how would you tackle your daily life? Being literate is a crucial part of everyone’s life; reading and writing are essential for a person’s success. Every single day, it’s used, whether it’s for an Advanced Placement Language class or reading a billboard as you’re driving past. As a child, I grew up reading on a daily basis and I believe that I am as successful as I am on behalf of it. Countless memories have been created, thanks to the multiple books that have been read and the umpteen amount of papers that I’ve written. Throughout the numerous years of my education, my teachers and parents left a long lasting impact on my reading and writing skills.
Everyone around me was silently sitting, staring down at their laps. Me, on the other hand, would just sit there and stare at a wall, while humming to myself. I never understood why all of my classmates enjoyed reading books. Correction; I actually just did not understand what was wrong with me, and why I did not enjoy reading like all of the other kids did. Reading never sparked my interest due to many reasons, including; being distracted, being laughed at, and the books I was forced to read.
I love writing as much as I can. It allows me the freedom to be someone else. It gives my imagination the freedom to be wide open. When I write, I want other people who read it to understand what I am writing. I want my story to get the audiences’ senses working. I be sure to write my own ideas and thoughts, so as to not plagiarize anyone’s work. Writing is and should be a free-thinking love. Most writings are going to have a beginning, middle, and end. I like to have all three portions of a story because it gives you details you need, to stay interested. You should be sure that people can understand what you write. Loving what you write can have an amazing effect on what people read. I don’t think there is enough reading and writing going
Growing up with my parents, I found reading to be very fun but for religious purposes and newspaper about the incidents taking place in certain countries. Through my parents, reading started to seem like it can be beneficial if we want to know what is going on in the world and the rules and regulations of one’s religion. Although I was required to read many books for school, my parents reading habits made me feel as if I should copy them. My mom and dad would always read books or newspapers at a certain time and sometimes discuss it with each other. My parents occasionally told me that I should leave aside school books at times and read the books they do because I can learn a lot and discover many things I did not realize before and
Learning how to read and write was a challenging task for me as a kid. I believe I couldn’t read until the second grade and that was embarrassing. Being a slow learner made me insecure, which hindered me from building the confidence I needed to succeed and get pass identifying with having a disability. Instead, I was enrolled into a special ed class that I had to leave my regular class to attend. During my special ed class all I could think about was how I couldn’t wait to get back to my regular class so I didn’t have to tell any of my classmate where I was. Therefore, my focus unfortunately wasn’t on learning, like it should have been!
When I was younger, I’ve always had a creative mind when it came to free writing, but reading had influenced my writing. When reading fictional stories this had developed my imagination immensely because of how creative authors can be with their stories and I’ve always thought outside the box. The role of reading and writing has become a huge impact in my life. The importance in my education is to have knowledge in what you write and read as you get older these two areas tend to have more complex skills divided up into different sections.
As a student I like to read a lot to enhance my reading habit and also to improve on my academics. There is one thing I have learnt going forward. That is, I get better at it. As it is often said that practice makes man perfect. I have also observed that authors and writers do spice up their writing skills by the use of metaphor in their writing. They do that by gathering information, interpreting our environment and making reasonable judgement.
When I was a little kid my parents and family were always trying to teach me how to read and write. Its been something I’ve known how to do without even thinking about it. When I was around 6 or 7 years old we would go to Mexico and visit my grandma, who had lived there at the time, and the neighbor had a granddaughter a little older than me. She would come over and play, one day I had brought my toys and some books and she had asked me what they were and I told her they were books. She went on and explained how she didn’t know how to read or write, how her grandparents couldn’t take her to school due to them be elderly and how far away they lived from a school. I was kind of confused because in the United States I hadn’t ever met someone
All my life I’ve struggled with writing, creative or research based, it has been the biggest barrier in my high school career. I find it surprising how much I struggle with it since I’ve been writing essays and papers in nearly every class. Most classes that aren’t even English have an assignment which involves writing some sort of paper, even in Spanish.
Growing up, I thought of writing as discomforting and boring because sometimes a sentence would take too long to write and I would fear that my handwriting would be more terrible than others. However, as the years passed by and I progressed, I started to grow a settling interest for 3rd person writing. Thanks to my love for reading stories, I wanted to create my own set of stories and use my imagination to put it down in words. Although there was more to this in the real world than writing stories, this is what gained my interest in writing and the one thing that made me feel comfortable while writing.
When I was younger I started learning how to read and write. My mom started to help me read and write because it was important that school was my main focus. Even though I was very young I stayed consistent on reading and writing. Most parents start early with their kids on learning getting ready for school. At first, I didn’t like it because all I use to do was sit up and play the game. I didn’t want to do anything else until my mom brought a book in my room and told me to start reading. I looked at the book funny because I didn’t know what to do with it, so my mom sat with me and started to teach me how to read. When you read a lot, your writing comes easy because you’ll have loads of comprehension and know how to spell words. My mom has played a big role in my life when it came down to school. She stayed on top of me when it came down to my school work because she wanted me to be someone in life. With her teaching, me how to read and write early it wasn’t easy because sometimes I use to get frustrated and say that “I hate reading and writing”. When I started school my goals to bring my mom home A’s and B’s on my report card. When it came down to my work I was always focus. When I first started school, I knew a lot because I started reading and writing early.
I noticed that some writing styles make it harder for me to read, concentrate and follow the idea of the text, if the writing consists of very long phrases and is overloaded with some difficult expressions and lots of unknown terms. On the other hand, if the author tries to keep the phrases more or less simple and clear, tries to hold my interests and makes the whole thing easy to follow, all those things make my reading process more pleasurable. Surely, the topic I’m researching plays a prominent role in the level of pleasure I’m receiving during the reading. I’m more interested in reading some articles on photography or psychology rather than finance or physics. I would enjoy more reading some fiction than some assignments for school. Richard E. Miller and Ann Jurecic, the authors of Habits of the Creative Mind, point out that reading process is not the same for everyone. They ask questions like “Once the process of reading has been routinized and internalized, why is that different people reading different material reach different conclusions? Or to put this another way, why is there ambiguity?” (Miller and Jurecic 80). Indeed, after reading the same text, each of us will make different conclusions and have different feelings about what we’ve read. A lot depends on our previous knowledge and beliefs, ability to analyze information and many other factors.
Reading and writing are two of the most important tools in my life, because without them I would not have an education. They form the basis of a class; for example, completing a lab in chemistry would not be possible without following a written lab procedure. These two skills are taught at such a young age, and as education advances students must continue to strive to reach a higher level. I can remember in elementary school, we were always pushed to reach the next reading level once we had successfully mastered the one we were on. It was always a competition for my sister and I to be at a higher level, I usually won. Even though I was excelling in reading it was the complete opposite for writing. It is something that has never come easy
Reading comes as the second commandment, you write first and then you read, and the more you read what you write, the more you get better in writing.
