Although the students on the board of ASB are given a say in school-wide decisions, the general population of students should be given more power, within reasonability, regarding choices that affect their high school experience. Many students have requested more classes involving language, technology, and Advanced Placement that are not currently provided. Even within the short duration of my attendance at PDHS, I have heard many of these complaints. If enough students support the addition of a particular course, said course would most likely benefit those students. Depriving them of such an opportunity cheapens the main purpose of high school: preparing students for higher education. Of course, the budget must be taken into account here, …show more content…
Again, ASB students have a say on many important decisions, but the vast majority of students have no say in decisions regarding them. Elections such as those held in order to choose the student body government members or online surveys/polls should be held in order to decide specific additions. For decisions concerning a specific demographic of the student body , students targeted by the decision should account for a larger vote. This may be done by giving them a vote equivalent of more than one vote, but less than two, with the vote size depending on the magnitude of the decision. Say the addition of a girl’s sports team is to be decided upon via election. The males would have a smaller vote and the females would receive a greater vote, as the addition of a new girl’s sports team would theoretically not affect males all too significantly. These votes would tailor the high school environment in accordance with the desires of the students, as a vote may be used in order to decide campus additions made by the clubs. If students are in an environment tailored more towards their preference, performance rates will rise, just as how the implementation of an alternative workspace builds enthusiasm in employees. This has been observed in the Google offices, as pointed out by The New York Times. At Google, software engineers are allowed to, “design their own desks or workstations out of what resemble oversize Tinker Toys”. This provokes
Case #2: Board of Education, Island Trees Union Free School District No. 26, et al. v. Pico, by his next friend Pico, et al.
It can be concluded Teachers are held to a higher standard then non-educational occupations, as “The Supreme Court has acknowledged that a “teacher serves as a role model for…students exerting a subtle but important influence over their perceptions and values” (Cambron-McCabe, McCathy & Eckes, 2014, p. 251). Teachers must be conscious to the ideology their actions, words, and mannerism can directly influence their student audience. The 1st amendment freedom of expression offers protection to teachers as it applies to the following clause, “Public employees’ comments on matters of public concern are protected expression if they are made as a citizen and not pursuant to official job duties” (Cambron-McCabe, McCathy & Eckes, 2014, p. 233).
The Everson v. Board of Education case in 1947 looked at whether or not church and state should be separate. The Everson v Board of Education case permitted reimbursement of money to parents who sent their children to school on public transportation. The parents who choose for their children to attend Catholic schools were also eligible for this reimbursement. Was the Establishment Cause of the First Amendment violated in this verdict? The Court has not always read the constitutional principle as complete, and the range of separation between Church (religion) and State (government) in the U.S. is a continuing topic of dispute. Religion has to do with what we believe about God, life, morals. Politics is government, order, society, and
As a professional school counselor, it's important to be competent in the profession that you're in and also abiding the code of ethics. I went to my state of Georgia's board of education website for school counselors, and I can upon a case dated back in 2006 that had something to do with a school counselor who was found to be incompetent in her profession. In the case of Julett Carnahan vs Butts County board of education, one of the reasons the board decided to discipline Carnahan was because they found her to incompetent as a school counselor. The case also stated the superintendent presented evidence that other faculty members did not believe her at all as a school counselor. Other evidence shows that she failed to meet with one student for a couple of days after being referred by someone, and it required consultation within 24 hours which is also an ethical violation (Julett Carnahan vs Butts County Board of Education, 2006).
EDUC 512 Issue 1.5 Should Public Schooling be Redefined? Issue 2.6 Are Local School Boards Obsolete?
On November 9th 2015, a town hall meeting took place in my political science class. This meeting was a chance for students of the school to bring up concerns, or issues regarding there education. For their voice to be heard directly to the faculty that runs the school, the students could finally have a chance to get a valid answer. There was questions about safety, mathematics, community college education, and typical student issues.
That now the advancement program for students that are wishing to get ahead or looking for a future challenge. Are simply put on hold because the summer school classes are way too crowded that they can’t fit anyone else in there. Too many students nowadays are working half-heartedly so they can either just barely pass or take summer school since it’s a shorter time that they have to work hard. In other words our students are getting lazier and lazier by the day as our technology advances. The problem simply doesn’t end there right now students are limited by only being able to take one class ( up to 2 semesters ) per summer . Of courses not all the students can handle two or more classes but the ones who do . We need to be able to have a stable program where students are allowed to take more than one summer class and there wouldn’t be an issue about the classrooms being crowded. A stable program to help those we need to make up the classes they require to graduate and help those who need to make up classes and want to
The U.S government provides the basic services for all its citizens, which means fair treatment to all religious followers. The government helps the public and private religious institutions, however there is a limit for the government to be involved with these religious institutions. The government decided to create the Lemon Test, which ensures that the government cannot break the Establishment Clause. In the Lemon Test there are three basic prongs. First, the statute must have a secular legislative purpose; second, its principal or primary effect must be one that neither advances nor inhibits religion; finally, the statute must not foster "an excessive government entanglement with religion."
The learning environment that ELL students have in the classroom has been impacted by the history of laws and bills passed by the board of education. Many school districts all over the United States are experiencing an increase in the enrollment of students who cannot speak, read, or write English in order to fully participate in their education. Numerous pieces in history took action in order to prevent these learners from risking their loss of opportunities. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prevents discrimination based on a person’s race, color, or nationality. In Lau v. Nichols of 1974, the Supreme Court stated that school districts have to take steps in order to help ELL students conquer language barriers and to enable them to participate fully in the districts’ educational programs. The case of Plyler vs. Doe 1982 stated that no school or school district may have the ability to forbid immigrant children the access to public education. No Child Left Behind (2001): Accountability, AYP, and standardized tests for ELLs. The 1990 legal document is a “force that outlines the identification, services, and compliance of school districts to ensure equal and comprehensible instruction to ELLs.” The document was signed on August 14, 1990 into the District Court. This act was the result of a class action complaint filed on behalf of eight minority rights advocacy groups in Florida. They claimed that The State Board of Education had not complied with its obligations under federal and
The State Board of Education also known as the NASBE have an idea on a system in which students like myself must acquire good grades in order to participate in interscholastic activities. Which mean that student must pass all five classes in order to participate in competitive interscholastic activities. Many students and parents disagree with these terms. They believe that the requirement should be only applied in all extracurricular activities.
Enterprise City Schools has a simple hierarchy regarding the structure of the Enterprise High School’s Athletic Department. All major decisions require school board approval. However, Some of the day to day decision need only the approval of the principal or athletic director. The school board meets once a month on the third Tuesday of every month. Requiring all major decisions to have school board approval has its pros and cons. One major pro is coaches, the administrators must be organized and play proactively to get things accomplished. A con is that a decision may take a month to get made.
One of the main reasons that I feel so strongly about this specific topic is from the personal experience with the classes that have been cut or not offered by my school, Stephenson High School. Currently at Stephenson High School, they do not offer any foreign language classes, AP classes, or honor’s classes. Stephenson High School had previously offered more advanced classes such as Chemistry II, and Physics every year, now due to loss of funds and budget cuts Stephenson only offers base Chemistry every year and Physics every other year. Foreign language classes are among the other types of classes also not offered anymore at Stephenson High School. For example Stephenson had previously offered Spanish every year for the past decade, and this year it was just not offered,
Majority of the students will choose a number of non core classes and pick other electives such as art, physical science, construction, and etc. They fail to realize that letting students pick their electives could give them more credits and help them senior year with more scholarship opportunities. They argue about people learning less with physical education classes.Students learn more about life with physical education,it helps them academically as well .They fail to realize that students learn well with just physical education not by academics
Through partnering with organizations that are already addressing this issue, we could bring this awareness internationally, but for now we will be aiming towards national. Other interactions that would help with our initiative would be reaching college students, especially those who had lacked the resources in their early education. Interacting with the Board of Education is another way we could make aware of our social impact initiative. Many of other organizations are using Education as their social impact initiative, but are are using for a different purpose. Although we may be able to bring something new to the table, it makes it hard for us to find people to fund us. Other organization are also looking for the same funds, but only
For instance, myself as a sophomore i would like more option than what is given to me and other fellow students at conroe high school, we have a voice and we decided weather what we want and don't want something and want to be heard not ignore. However, the school may not want us walking off campus is because they are worry for our safety since when we are not at home the school is in charge but, the students can have a say and decide whether they would want cafeteria food provided of fast food like taco bell either way they are paying for food they'll either eat or not eat and waste.
