Kiranjot Randhawa, Brampton, ON- Students of all high school’s have protested on the Ontario school’s dress code, starting the first week of November 2017. This protest has been taking place all over Ontario schools, because girls and guys feel that clothing makes them who they are and if they get punished for wearing something, than they are not being themselves. Students have decided to wear whatever they want at school’s however, some students have held campaigns and programs to give reasons on why the dress code should be changed.
Students decided that it was time to take an action towards the dress code starting November 2017. As one student indicated “All we want is to be ourselves and not someone that the school wants us to be, if we do not have the right to wear clothes we want than we will just break the rules”. All of the students are trying to say that clothes is a huge part of who they are, and how they want to show it should be up to them not the school board. By doing this protest students feel that they could make a difference and soon the school boards will start to see their point of view. Students started this protest on the first week of November 2017 and say they will keep it going even if it takes a whole year to get the board to allow a change in the dress code.
All over Ontario school’s children have been protesting and hope to see a change, however the teachers and staff members have gone crazy. As one teacher says “Students have gone insane with
The prominent reason behind the various overdone school rules regarding dress is the loose power that administrators have been given. They have been “reserve[d] the right to determine if a clothing item or accessory is appropriate for school” (Carroll High School Student Handbook 2010-2011 18). The officials at school are using their own personal opinions to judge the students’ dress. Since styles change as time goes on, the generation in control and the
Students are always complaining about the dress codes at their school, and are rejecting the idea of school uniforms. It creates an equal place to all students. But
Dress codes in middle and high schools are a form of discrimination against teenage girls in today’s society. Parents and students all over the country argue that dress codes are directed mainly at girls and are a blatant example of gender inequality. The idea behind the strict enforcement of a dress code is that it will teach self-respect and raise moral standards for the students. However, when the reason for many dress code violations is questioned the rationale is often to prevent distracting the male students. Young women across the country are being shamed and punished for wearing what schools consider immodest and being a distraction to their male peers. This discrimination against female students results in their clothes being strictly regulated and dress coded more often than male students’ clothes are. The enforcement of these discriminatory dress codes has become a form of public humiliation for female students. Theoretically, a dress code makes sense and should be effective. In reality, it does not affect how students dress but causes a distraction and interruption of a girl’s education.
When in the course of life events it becomes necessary for students to protest against dress code. Students should have the right to wear any type of attire they desire to because it is a form of expressing their individuality.
Students have been affected by dress codes for many years. Others, for better or for worse, never had to deal with them. It has been debated for years between parents, students, and school systems alike as to whether or not dress codes are appropriate to enforce. This essay will summarize, make an argument, and analyze Krystal Miller’s article on this subject, titled, “School Dress Codes”.
At the Etobicoke School for the Arts, students have started to fight back. Many protests have been happening all over the Durham region, student have been breaking the dress code in large groups or missing classes to hold protesting signs up outside for the schools. It is interesting to see that both males and females can agree that the schools are using the dress to exploit and oppress women and are starting to fight back. Student Evette Reay was sent home for wearing something completely harmless. However, her teacher claimed that her dress was too short and because this was the third time Reay broke the dress code, she was suspended from school for three days.
Have you ever had the feeling when you wear something you don’t like but have to or else you’ll get punished? Students have that feeling all the time. That’s why Conroe High School should change it's policy on dress code because, it allows students to express themselves, and it allows students to wear what they’re comfortable in.
Keep in mind that all education institutions are unalike from one another depending on the beliefs, ideologies, location, and various factors. Thus, a standard dress code is utilized in most schools that is determined by the school board. However, the school board rules on dress code can be different and outdated with students’ viewpoints. For example, a board member believes that uniforms provide a sense of community, while students in Neale-Wade Academy in Cambridgeshire outright hate the idea because it’s “childish” (Spencer 1). The best method to address this disparity is for the school to create a referendum for students, teachers, and community members alike. School communities must have the right to determine what is appropriate to wear to school in an ever-changing society. The school community should have a general consensus on the rules of the dress code through a referendum or a survey for the entire community to update and revise rules. Voting is the best method because it provides an opportunity for all community members to make their voices be heard. The surveys or votes will
Students all over the United States are believe that school dress codes are are biased and sexist. Many people are finding ways to protest against the dress codes, for example The Atlantic says, "'I’ve never seen a boy called out for his attire even though they also break the rules,' says Sunseri, who last summer produced Shame: A Documentary on School Dress Code, a film featuring interviews with dozens of her classmates and her school principal, that explores the negative impact biased rules can have on girls’ confidence and sense of self." This shows that the dress codes are destroying girls, confidence causing them to have low self-esteem. This is also just one way that people are protesting against dress codes. Even adults do not agree with the dress codes in schools. Choices
As times have changed school dress codes have not. These dress codes have not been updated and are shaming young girls and woman. The argument for dress codes are saying that dress codes help keep order and discipline in schools as well as self respect. Within that argument I disagree about a majority of those reasonings. “Dress codes have proven to increase student achievement by encouraging students to concentrate more on their studies and less on their wardrobe. A de-emphasis on clothing can also save money, as there will be less pressure to keep up with expensive trends and fashions.” Not only do dress codes target young women by treating them as if they are distractions, they also tend to cost more than normal everyday attire would. The
Recently throughout middle schools & high schools dress code has been an issue. Many kids have protested on changing or not changing dress code. Lots of kids have different opinions on this topic. Some think it's more for girls, it's not fair to girls, it causes stress and makes them feel like they're in an uncomfortable environment and or it affects their learning time.
Students struggle throughout high school and go through a great deal of stress. Whether it be making friends, or working hard to pass a difficult class. To make things more pressuring, they are not allowed to wear what they want. The administration made the decision that it is best to suspend a student for their choice in clothing. If they go against the rule of dress code, there will be serious consequences. What students wear should not affect their class work. If a student gets sent home for their outfit, it is affecting their grades and attendance. Punishment disrupts the students education more than what they are wearing. High school students should feel free to embrace their individuality without being pressured by dress codes; therefore, it should be eliminated from all schools indefinitely.
The educational system has been established to teach students to apply themselves to their work and build individuality. Having a dress code violates a student's self-expression. When wearing uniforms, it is
Parents have been complaining that they have bought their child a new outfit that they wore to school and got dress coded. And some other parents complain that boys have an easier dress code than girls, and that boys can pretty much wear anything. Children should be able to wear what they want, but still within an easier dress code. The biggest problem about this is that parents waste money to be able to only wear that outfit over the weekend or on breaks, and not being able to get good use out of it if it’s the winter after Christmas. Or the end of summer beginning school. Children also are complaining about dress code. There once was a whole class that came to protest, but there's was nothing to do other than go to the SCBOE office, which was not on their list to go places so they never got the chance to. The workers here at the offices decided to come up with a plan to help with the dress
Girls not being able to wear their style of clothes. Being framed such as wearing their own personality in clothing. These are just some of the things happening at schools around the world. Students are getting in trouble and punished for violating school dress codes by wearing outfits that are deemed ‘showing too much skin’. Protests against dress codes get to the very heart of what it means to be an adolescent girl. Dress codes are too strict at school; they shouldn’t be as harsh, this issue about dress codes needs to be stopped.
