The educational system has been a really big issue among educators. Which is a huge problem in the classrooms worldwide. This doesn’t help them plan for their future or give them any idea on what they want to in life. Simply put, agree with Gatto, the educational system shouldn’t split students up based off their test scores. When you separate students based on anything other than their passion you create an environment where they feel uncomfortable and unsuccessful. Gatto’s “Against School: How Public Education Cripple Our Kids and Why.” explains the main reasons why the educational system should be changed by using Gatto’s solution. Public Education is failing America’s students and Gatto thinks it’s the teachers fault. According to students mentioned in his essay the work is stupid, that it made no sense, in other words they already knew the content that was being taught. Students said, “They wanted to be doing something real, not just sitting round.” The students also said, “Teachers didn’t seem to know much about their subject and clearly weren’t interested in learning more.” Honestly, the kids were right including the fact that teachers were every bit as bored they were according to Gatto. We must all agree that some teachers don’t know anything about or very little about the subject they are teaching. I agree with Gatto because I felt the same way in Elementary School, Middle School, High School that there were some subjects that I thought was pointless and
Through video about savage inequalities, I realized that at this time, there have big of different in the conditions of school between many poor children and many children rich. Although nowadays, we are provided the equal opportunity for everyone, at this time, the poor children live in an education is more inferior than the children who grow up in rich families. I think that the huge differences in the public school system are based on racism and social class. All my sense is assaulted when I see what the poor children are treated in bad conditions such as their school have dreadful amounts of sewage in their backyards, the facilities aren't well-equipped or worn-out and bad health care. Well, it looks abandoned in many years. In contradistinction to poor children, the children who grow up in families with the better economic situation have access to the most advanced equipment,
In “Dumbing Us Down: Weapons of Mass Instruction”, John Taylor Gatto explores the concepts of education and the path to finding one’s true self. Personal experiences of Gatto as a junior high school teacher in the public school system for thirty years demonstrate that the modern education system emphasizes memorization, standardized testing, and activities to kill time rather than promote individual thought. Although the public school system fails to properly teach, Gatto states that it is still possible for this generation to actually learn if we simply take the time to learn how to learn. In comparison to his teaching experience, Gatto discusses his own classical education. His education in Monongahela, Pennsylvania was shaped by hands on experience, where books were used as a means to satisfy curiosity and aid thinking rather than a piece of work to
Nelson Mandela once said “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” The United States Public Education isn’t giving children this weapon but is failing the children that are our future. The United States has high confidence of the quality of education but when it comes to test scores they are low compared to other developed countries. The adults making the decisions of student’s education aren’t making these decisions to help the students succeed but for the benefit of themselves. Poor choices are being made on who is shaping these children's minds and the budgeting for these public schools.
The benefits of education can never be stolen from you, but can help you grow and evolve. Aside from leading you to better job opportunities, education will also make you surround yourself with people that will push you to become your best self. Education is also the hope most blue-collar and poor minority have to improve their future and create a better one for their kids. It is also the key to a better and brighter mindset. I intend to discuss the significance of post-secondary education and summarize the arguments of authors and their points of view. I will also reflect on the importance of education and how it will fit into my future, for example attending a four-year university and getting my bachelor's degree to pursue my dream of becoming independent and having something that will lead me to a brighter future and mindset.
Education is the method of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of information, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. the wealth of information acquired by an individual when studying specific topics or experiencing life lessons that give an understanding of one thing. education needs instruction of some kind from a private or composed literature. the foremost common types of education result from years of schooling that includes studies of a spread of subjects. the function of education is to show one to think intensively and to think critically. intelligence and character, that's the goal of true education. the goal of education isn't to extend the quantity of information however to form the possibilities for a child to create and see, to make men capable of doing new things. it's the foremost powerful weapon that we are able to use to alter the world.
Children in underprivileged areas like Afghanistan, Brazil, and Kenya battled drawbacks daily only to achieve a basic education. Many are unaware of the circumstances in which poverty affects children. Few circumstantial factors kept mass numbers of children in these destitute areas from getting the crucial knowledge needed to obtain schooling and better lives. Children could not receive an education due to family complications. Children also could not obtain education on account of psychological and environmental obstacles. In contrast, a few students overcame their shortcomings and, as a result of the environments they lived in, pursued education for a life better than their ancestors.
Education is an investment. This is the reason we see many people acquire education and become successful. Life is not bed of roses, and some people are unable to get their desired education. This may be due to various reasons such as not having enough money, or taking care of their families and loved ones. However, there are some people who fights with life to achieve their goals and return to college to fulfil it. According the article, “Colleges Embrace Older Students, Part-timers”, Sandra Block discusses that commute daily to college and family dependencies are also major obstacle for non-traditional students beside paying for tuition. Those who lives in remote areas it becomes very difficult to travel college daily. Moreover, people who are married they need to spend time with their spouse and children. Block suggests some solutions to overcome these problems, which includes creating more online interactive courses, opening satellite locations, evening classes and offering scholarships can aid the part-timers to fulfil their dreams. Even though there are several ways to counter the problems of non-traditional students but I suggest creating more online interactive courses will aid them to achieve their dreams.
The primary goal for schooling, from early child learning to graduating college, is to build a well educated and socially acceptable generation for tomorrow’s America. The crucial development of these young children hangs on the shoulders of teachers, parents, and themselves. Most people believe that attaining a proper school based education is what allows children and young adults to grow into responsible and successful men and woman fit to run this nation. However, there are a few key factors that are of high importance when attempting to achieve a useful education.
A country is only able to grow and prosper through the education of each successive generation. In essence, the quality of the education system defines the potential of future leaders. Without proper teaching each country could revert, fatal mistakes defining the economy, political climate, and general future of a country for decades. The importance of education is clear meaning no country is free of the scrutiny their education system will undergo; although, some countries have far exceeded expectations. Leaders in standardized testing, such as Singapore and Japan, have made the benchmark for other countries to strive after. In the United States a sense of pride accompanies the general belief that intelligence is high. Score results that reveal that this is not the case spark a sense of outrage, and blame is directed at the education system. Could it be that education is subpar in this country? Questions about the education of American students are well founded seeing as issues within have existed since the beginning. Currently the debate is over how effective the system truly is if the scores are showing a lack of understanding. Those in favor of the current conditions largely point out the advancement of education over the centuries. Going from widespread illiteracy of those unable to receive education to the highest high school graduation rates America has seen is hard to argue against. Yet issues remain to be addressed which keeps approval from being unanimous. Of
Children do not seem to have a sense of future and they often live in the present which is valuable because they are still young. Schooling puts pressure on their future because they are candidates of the future and their adult life is on hold. Though children are young to yet decide their future, they should have the options and experiences to have references for their ideal adult life. Dewey puts pressure on teachers have a duty to facilitate the students to help discover what they are interested in. By finding students’ interest, teachers should teach their students in the idea play so that students do not seem to be forced to learn something but rather it is because they want to learn. To add on, he believes that children should be making the choices through experiences and emphasizes “hand-on” learning which further indicates teaching in play and having experiences. Dewar uses the phrase “think for oneself” to the ideal education system, a person doing an action based on their own decisions without the help or influences of others which means that the proper way of teaching is, teachers aren't supposed to feed children the answers but rather children are suppose to come up with an answer but the teacher is there to guide you. every individual within themselves have untrained skills but are waiting for it be released or be stimulated. This relates back to Kliebard idea of having children in programs set for a specific job but if they have specific jobs that do not need
Martin Luther King Jr. said, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.” This quote provides a positive definition of the functions of an education. True education isn’t defined by the ability to remember words and numbers; it's defined by the ability to think, with character - and I completely agree. This has been the goal of the American people for a long time. Even when coming from a foundation of poverty, many people have been able to rise up from rags and become filled with riches because of an education. But many haven’t been so lucky. For some, a lack of education is a barrier of success. Due to poverty, those who are in the lower-class aren’t always provided with the motivation or the means to succeed academically. Not only that, but in some cases, education isn’t of enough importance for those who don’t have the same opportunities as those who have an educational privilege. In some cases, being raised in a low-income area could be an exposure to a considerably “bad” education, due to low funding and reduced resources for an education. Although having an education provides more opportunities for success and an end to ignorance, it is often blocked by poverty, poor academic success, and poor teaching; poor teaching can have negative influence to a person's' education.
In an idealistic world, one’s education would not be determined by their social class or living environment. Instead, those who live in the low class outskirts of an urban industrial population to those who live in ritzy suburban homes and are part of the private school system would be learning the same values and have similar if not equal curricula. However, we as a society have not managed to make this ideal applicable. Instead we find ourselves with an education system that seems to benefit those with favourable living conditions. As discussed in Anyon’s “Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work”, depending on your economic status, you may be taught to just “Follow the steps in a procedure” as per the working class schools or how to independently carry out your creative activities as found in the affluent professional school. These very different extremes have an effect on one’s future by setting you up for a life as a factory worker or as a lawyer. It is this economical and social structure that I had to overcome to get to where I am today.
When it comes to the students needs, one must address socio economic status and workload. The United States of America is a developed country that advocates and encourages education for its entire people. As a matter of fact, it is getting much more difficult for people who do not have a GED or high school diploma to get a good paying job. Here are some reasons why: one, society encourages diversity, but does not follow up. According to the article “The Role of Student–Teacher Ratio in Parents’ Perceptions of Schools’ Engagement Efforts”, “Students from ethnic and racial minority backgrounds tend to have less educated parents, come from lower SES” (Rodriguez, 2014). The question is not how this impacts schools but what can we do to help these students be less affected. Some people did not have the privilege to go to school or to continue to school, therefore it may not be as important for their children to be educated, or they cannot help their children completely to receive a good education. There is encouragement for schools to be more diverse, but the reality is, not enough is done too help minority students. It is known that parents with a higher socio economic status, can be more capable when interacting with schools and having an impact. Wealthier people tend to have the upper hand, but why? It should not be this way and society should be united so that it
Why do students continue to enter a college education system that is no longer focusing on them? The education system was built to serve the interest of the public, to provide opportunities for people to further their education and move up or maintain their social classes, and to teach people to think for themselves. All of the authors Menand, Roth, and Couturier all agree that education is threatened by the fact that colleges are focusing more on their private affairs instead of the students. They believe college should be focused on the student and their ability to think on their own and “enhance their capabilities” (Roth 2). Rose-Hulman does this well by challenging their students with a hard curriculum, but at the same time they are willing to give them plenty of opportunities to find success with smaller class sizes and a student friendly environment.
I am a strong person who never gives up. I think everyone should know that education is one of the most important assets you can achieve in a lifetime. I think we all get busy looking for a quicker way to make it and take education for granted. At a young age I dropped out of school, got engaged, got married, got divorced all while spiraling down a dark path of addiction. I took a look at my life and being a single mother of three beautiful strong loving boys it was time to grow up and go back to school. So that hopefully I could become a positive role model for my children. So they can learn that it is never to late to turn your life around no matter how dark it seems.
