Over the past couple of years the National Football League as well as other football associations have witnessed a rise in the occurrences of severe head trauma to players resulting in concussions. One of the NFL’s top priorities is the health and safety of their players. These NFL players bring an abundant amount of joy and excitement to their wild, raving, die hard football fans across the nation. However, these mens’ health today and for decades to come is equally if not more important than their careers that often last an average of 4 years playing football. More and more parents are being forced to take their children into the local head trauma facilities. Their children are having symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and even vomiting. These are all signs of a concussion that has taken place on the child's brain. Parents are worried because they do not know the effects of concussions and are worried about the long term impact on their children. Bill Pennington of New York times stated in an article, “Deep concern among parents about the effects of concussions is colliding with imprecise understanding of the injury. To families whose anxiety is risen due to reports of former NFL players with degenerative brain disease, the new faculties are seen as top care” (Pennington 1). Kids are coming to their parents and coaches at much earlier ages than before. According to the article Stats on Concussion and Sports says the rate of concussions in eight-thirteen year olds has nearly doubled. Most often, kids that get these injuries and their first concussion can recover fully with no setbacks or long term injuries. However, it is the second and third concussions that can cause neurological disability and increase chances of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy by 39% (“Stats on Concussions and Sports” 1).
