Over the last decade, the prominence and relevance of sports has permeated the social fabric of American culture. As a sociological construct, sports have helped create a new sense of identity for millions of Americans by appealing to their personal and physical needs and by subconsciously influencing the manner in which they interact with one another. When analyzed through a sociological framework, sports have the capacity to transcend racial, political and socioeconomic barriers making it one of the world’s most powerful community-building institutions. The concept of sports, as a competitive physical activity, has existed through much of recorded human history and it is academically recognized to have played a fundamental role in shaping
Abstract: Society is affected every day by many different kinds of sports. These sports often govern society's way of life. People all over the nation turn their TVs to sporting events, such as golf, during the weekends. Scott Stossel states that "more than six million Americans enjoy watching golf on the weekends." Parents use sports as a teaching tool for their children. Kids learn teamwork and discipline from team sports programs and sports have also helped many students with their grades. Kids who want to compete in school sports are taught to keep their grades up or they won't be able to play, but the greedy coaches and schools often look around grades to keep their "star athletes" in the games. Adults have
Sport is defined as any competitive, physical activity that is guided through established rules. However, not all individuals would say it is the definition of sport, as there are many ways to define sports depending on the individual. So what is truly sport in the eyes of viewers and fans that are spread out around the world? But, clearly everyone has their own definition of what sport means to them and how important it is to the society. Sport is seen as an irreplaceable and valuable aspect that belongs to the American people which allows benefits to occur in the society. At the same time, sport can also be harmful to the society, but, many people choose to ignore or not see it. Though many would rather see the benefits of sport, instead of the harmful side of sport, as they rather choose to support sport as a benefit to the society. But, the society should not forget that sport can bring benefits and harms to the society as a whole. To understand the benefits and harms that sports bring to society, it would be best to understand the sociological perspective of functionalism and conflict theory as it will assist in deciding the most single benefit and harm to the society.
Who has watched the Olympics game or a professional basketball game and not wondered, “Why are so many of the best black athletes?” or “are they better suited to athletics than Whites or Asians genetically? It is well known that black athletes participate more in basketball and football. Comparing with black and white, Asian athletes are less participate in basketball or football. The topic that I chose for this ethnographic interview was sports in American culture. Sports are popular in America, and are a big part of the culture in America. I would say most people in America have played sports, whether they played as kids, in high school, at the collegiate level, or even professional. A great deal of people also enjoy watching sporting events. The following were the questions asked during the interview. How have sports affected your life? Why do you think sports are so popular in America’s culture? How are sports a part of the culture in America? What do you think about the amount of money spent on spectator sports?
This essay will concentrate on looking at the ethnic and class divide within the sports subculture of American society, and how it reflects American Society as a whole. When examining any society there is a always a broad area to cover, while looking at America’s society I will be looking at the arguments that it is the ‘land of the free’ a ‘new nation’ which immigrants flocked to start a new life in a country of much ‘opportunity’. I will be using the sport in the 19th century to examine just how much America was a land of opportunity and of the free, and whether it differed from the attitudes in countries from around the rest of the world.
Sport is a creation of social reality and no other foundation except possibly religion, commands the ethnic fascination that sport does. Sport also offers competitiveness and organized conflict in controlled surroundings that are not found in other parts of social life. There is an everlasting connection between social class, ethnicity, and sports. Baseball in the United States is a good example of this because they continue to recruit players from the blue-collar part of the population leaving out black males; this attracted a good amount of scholarly attention and speculation. Black players were banned from major league sports until 1940. “Sport is an arena of patterned behaviors, social structures, and interinstitutional relationships that holds unique opportunities to study and understand the complexities of social life.” The treatment of African Americans in sport has been problematic for years; they had to overcome many different obstacles due to discrimination from coaches, managers, players, and even the fans.

Football has grown to be a very important sport of American Culture, especially in the last 50 years. Football is now the most followed by sport in America. Football is being played by high-school, colleges, and professional teams. The concept of football started in the late 1800s, known as rugby. I chose football because it’s my favorite sport, and it’s a fun game to play.
Most people play sports and I have and always played soccer. Coming to American Heritage the season was different, because where I lives there was only soccer and so it was played all school long. As I first got here I wondered when I would be able to play this sport in school, because there are different seasons in which different sports are played. For example football and soccer are not played at the same times. Soccer is played in Spring and football is a summer sport. I will use three categories to differentiate between sports. I will classify summer sports, winter sports, springs sports. These three different categorizes will give you a better understanding to sports and a clearer vision about the different types of sports. The many different types of sports can not just be categorized into one section called sports, because it is too broad. Sports go back many years. The Olympics are one of the oldest sports competitions world wide. This is why I have decided to choose sports as my topic. There are three main types of seasonal sports that can be categorized into winter sports, summer sports, and spring sports.
Sports have always been an important part of our life as they are considered to be one of the most accessible recreational activities available to almost all population groups. There are, certainly, various kinds of sport that one can engage in, and, often times, they may be influenced by one’s socioeconomic status, religious beliefs, culture, geographical location and more. This aspect, however, is what makes sports so appealing to the public, and its uniqueness allows for accommodation of almost every personality. Sports generally allow children and adults to sustain their body, mind, and spirits in excellent shape by combining the two of the most important factors: physical exercise to keep the body lean and healthy and play to keep
Hot, cool, and banal nationalism are degrees of which we express pride in our country. American sport is typically a banal expression of nationalism, however it can be used to manufacture swings to the hot side of the spectrum. At the present time, America is in a period of hot nationalism. American sport currently emphasizes American nationalism. During sporting events the military is idolized with such things as the military homecoming events.
One the richest histories in the world is the history of sports. Sports are filled with many different legends in multiple eras, multiple sports, and multiple mentalities. Over the years sports have evolved to a worldwide phenomenon, going from soccer to cricket. Different countries have different sports filled with different role models and leaders. While football is a worldwide game other sports are unknown or unfamiliar to people that are not from that certain country (Boyle, Raymond, and Haynes, Richard).
Sports have such an enormous part of people’s lives and they influence us in various ways. People not only participate in sports, but they discuss, follow, write, and even fantasize about them daily. Particularly through the eyes of young children, who often view professional athletes as role models, and look up to them. Popular culture is a part of everyone’s lives today, and it affects sports through a plethora of positive and negative ways. Popular culture makes certain athletes look very humbling, but then sometimes it could make an athlete look like a complete fool. Many young boys who enjoy sports usually have dreams of playing professionally one day. Therefore these athlete role models have such a
When you think of entertainment what do you first think of? Perhaps you said sports. Sports have long been a source of entertainment, competition, and even exercise. This idea of sport first entered this world over 3,500 years ago in ancient Mesoamerican. It was the center of culture, politics, and social lives for the whole civilization. It solved political problems or it was just a way to have fun. It has evolved and modernized into one of the most profitable and loved things in the world. When Americans think of sports, some of the first things that come to mind are the NBA, the NFL, along with
