In Wolof, “Teranga”, is the word for hospitality. This value is so significant in Senegal that the national football team is known as the “Lions of Teranga”. Other Senegalese values such as Kersa (respect for others) and Tegin (good manners) make the country known for its welcoming nature. My masters’ degree in international peace and conflict resolution taught me that the inclusivity of Senegalese culture is an important factor for resolving wars and disputes. While having the joy of teaching English, I want to also learn about cultural characteristics that explain its peaceful nature and how they can be encouraged in other places. I entered the education field five years ago out of my love of learning. I started teaching in college and after graduation through the Every Move Counts Fellowship program that brings chess to children in the Tuscaloosa, Alabama. In order to better facilitate learning, I read journal articles and analyzed the results of multiple studies on both chess and pedagogy. Our team developed a better model of lesson plans on how and when to teach the basic rules and how to deal with students’ problematic behavior. The school board invited us to implement the updated program. Teachers reported that students improved in different subjects after we started. Chess teaches one to analyze situations, evaluate options, and solve problems, and the school administration understood the benefits. To ensure success, I trained the college students how
Teachers have been brainstorming the skill that students will need to manage conflicts. This program has not yet been evaluated, but it has spread to several countries. Teachers have to provide the necessary practice of skills to their students.
Review: Throuout the quarter, I have learned that because children learn differently it’s important for us as teachers to make sure that the classroom rules are clear for all children. If there is confusion it’s important for us teachers to explain them so that the children are not confused. Because if the classroom rules are unclear or not communicated enoght to the children they will negect the rules and do what they want. In addition, if the children don’t get discipline at home or don’t have clear established rules at home those children will have a harder time adjusting to having to follow directions more than a child who has a regualr sechedule and clear rules in and outside the home. Finally, rules are pro-active tools because, with
The Afro-centric school curriculum help develop a sense of community while expanding students mind to adopt different ideologies. “A school based on African values, it is believed, would eliminate the patterns of rejection and alienation that engulf so many African American school children, especially males”(Pollard). In the public school system it lacks to provide in depth of the African culture as far as learning about Kings, Queens, and missing history. In learning about Kings and Queen it is believed that it would help African American children to have self esteem and to grow into productive adults in their respective communities and society in general. An Afro-centric school curriculum is believed to promote an sense of cultural awareness. Culture is not a tradition but is an experience that we face in our everyday lives within the community.
Hospitality was deeply embedded in ancient Greek culture. Hospitality was very important and seen as a code of conduct. The term used to describe the concept of Ancient Greek hospitality was xenia. Xenia is basically the generosity and courtesy shown to guests, strangers, or those far from home. Xenia consists of two rules. The first rule is from host to guest, in which the host must be hospitable to the guest and provide basic needs (food, drink, and a bath). The host also has to hold all questioning until after the guest has stated his/her needs. The second rule is from guest to host, in which the guest has to be courteous to the host and not a burden. In ancient Greek culture, xenia was seen as a religious duty. The people believed
In this paper I talk about my experience and how it turned out to be fascinating. I mention how my visit to O’Brien allowed for me to gather up enough information to compare and contrast the teachers I got to meet. The two teachers I compare and contrast are Mrs. Gray and Mrs. Raber. I talk about their similarities, one of them being how both their teaching styles are teacher-centered and another similarity being that both teachers share the same theories. I explain how both Mrs. Gray and Mrs. Raber use behaviorism in their classrooms. After talking about their similarities I talk about their differences. The differences I mention is how Mrs. Raber uses humanism in her classroom by allowing her students to choose what game they’d love to play
Educating Esmé was a biography about Esmé Raji Codell’s first year of teaching and the experiences she had throughout the year. She describes the many challenges faced when working in a school in a low income area and how it differs from that of a high income area. In addition, she talks about the many teaching styles and problem solving techniques she used in her classroom. Some of her methods she used were creative and could easily grasp the children’s attention, but one example of her style I would never use in my classroom is letting one of the children that repeatedly misbehaves teach the class. As a future high school teacher, I feel as if this particular method would be ineffective because of the age range of the children. However, I look up to her desire to educate children
In Greek culture, hospitality is one of their main ideals that they value very dearly. The hospitality code is a way for the Greeks honor both their guests and Zeus. Zeus was essentially in charge of enforcing the code of hospitality and will punish either the host or guest who broke the code. The Greeks think of hospitality as respect from the host to the guest and respect from guest to host. The host to guest rule is where the host must be hospitable towards the guest and provide them food/drink/shelter and whatever else the guest requires. However, in return, the guest must be courteous to the host and abide by their rules that the host sets and not be a burden in anyway. There are a few myths that explore more in depth what it means to follow and not follow these rules of hospitality.
In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, an epic written in fourteenth century by a contemporary of Geoffrey Chaucer, we learn about a knight and his quest. Sir Gawain, sworn to seek the Green Knight as part of a deal, first finds himself in an enchanted and beautiful forest and then ushered into a beautiful castle of Bercilak, its host. Bercilak's court seems so like Arthur's that it appears to offer Gawain a familiar refuge in alien territory. The orderliness and beauty of the forest and the castle recall the civilized world of Arthur's court. Gawain is welcomed as warmly as if he has arrived at Camelot. The abundant hospitality and congeniality of the host and servants are clear in this scene, and they put Gawain at
Set in the bustling city of Conakry, Abdoulaye travels to Africa in seek of a better education. Spending hours in a traditional classroom, listening to an instructor’s tedious lectures (a stereotypical American school system), is not what he describes as an ideal learning experience. Thus, Abdoulaye ventured to Elhadj Ismailah Bah, a private school in Africa in hopes of retrieving a different style of learning. However, his decision to travel abroad to stray away from America’s “dull” learning experience changed from excitement and eagerness to utter regret. The first day of at his new school started off with him introducing himself to his class. After Abdoulaye’s brief introduction, he silently walked across the filthy classroom and sat in

Nowadays trends are everywhere. You can find them in every industry and they play a huge role. I consider and know that children are the future of our world; we have to know how to teach and educate them adequately so they could be prepared to lead future generations. I consider that each child has its own way of learning; there are multiple ways in which a person could be intelligent and capable of completing tasks. I want to be able to help children with everything they need. I want to motivate them to do and be the best in every task and area, everything that they dream and think about, to persuade their dreams and never give up no matter how hard they think it is or how difficult becomes trough the way. I don’t want to be the type of teacher that goes through the school year teaching what I have to and limit my capabilities to show them things and lessons useful for their lives, I want every child that goes to my classroom, leave it at the end of the year with instructions or lessons that make them better persons. Additionally, think that it’s important to have a good balance between discipline and kindness with students, it’s important to have a good relationship with the students because in that way is easier to communicate with them; if they have any problems or trouble learning a lesson or something in the content, if they have a good communication and relationship with you, it will be easier for them to tell you about what is causing them trouble. In some cases, when the educator is strong and teaches with hard discipline, the students tend to evade them and
