The Issue Of Global Warming

Global warming is the steady heating of Earth’s land, oceans, and atmosphere caused primarily by human activity. Climate change is one of the world’s biggest challenges right now, from people actively arguing that it doesn’t exist- to other’s who don’t care enough to do anything about it. There’s evidence showing that climate change is happening and affecting our world now and from what it seems, if action isn’t taken, major consequences will soon arise. Most of the world’s land mass has experienced a 0.2-1.0 degree Celsius average temperature increase since the 1970s, the temperatures of the Artic has increased at almost twice the mean global rate. Climate change is caused by human factors such as greenhouse gases and ozone depletion and because humans are so dependent on fossil fuels in their day to day lives, the issue at hand is only going to get worse.

Global warming is one of the most controversial topics in the world today. Global warming describes a condition where the average temperature of the earth’s atmosphere and oceans increase. Global warming is predicted to have significant harmful effects on life on earth. If one were to ever ask, “What’s the biggest issue that humanity is facing right now,” there would be one clear answer. The answer would be the issue that affects everyone in the planet, leaving no area untouched. It would be the one that is destroying the Earth’s limited resources, from removal the green forests to the tainting of the clear skies and the crystal arctic ice. Humans also further affect the environment through deforestation and further destruction of natural environments. Despite these clear causes of environmental impacts, some argue that humans are not the cause of these changes in the climate. There is an issue on this planet that will define this generation. The issue is climate change. Global warming. A world on the collapse as our oceans are acidified, our air polluted, our forests disappearing, and human rights issues getting worse. It seems that people are not aware of how big climate change actually is. It’s not something that only takes place on the ice caps or in the forests on the far corners of the world. This is an issue that happens here, and now. It’s real. It’s happening.

Take a deep breath and imagine it is Sunday morning. The birds are chirping, the air is crisp with freshness, and the sun is radiating at a perfect temperature of 62 degrees. The coast is a 6-minute drive away, and this is the perfect day to take a short journey to the rocky shore and splash in the water. However, there is one problem, an action such as driving to the beach front will almost certainly contribute to the destructive effects of climate change. Due to this claim, is it then morally obligatory to not go on this Sunday morning drive in an effort to prevent greenhouse gas emissions?

Global warming has been a highly controversial issue. Global warming is the everlasting rise in the standard temperature of earth due to widespread accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which ultimately forms a layer that traps heat and warms the planet. With the temperature rising, this causes the melting of the polar ice caps. Ultimately, this causes the sea levels to rise, which can threaten lives and the environment. According to Olutoyin Fashae and Olumide Onafeso, “global sea levels have been estimated to rise significantly.” The effect of sea level rising and ocean surge is causing major impacts of climate change to the urban Lagos in Nigeria.

Pollution is poisoning our air, destroying our world, killing our species and plants; Human activity is to blame. However, since 2012 Fox news has been reporting that global warming is fake and that it is not caused by human activity but rather by natural causes. Further, this global warming debate has been an ongoing battle between the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. In 2012 during Obamas second run for presidency, the global warming debate went on full blast. That year Obama had announced a series of executive actions to reduce carbon pollution, prepare the U.S. for the impacted of climate change, and lead international efforts to address global climate change. This announcement made many republicans angry and lead them to try to debunk global warming. Further, conservative news channels particularly fox news started reporting that climate change was fake. Fox News reported in an interview with John Coleman weather channel co-founder, “there is no scientific proof that supports man-made climate change (John Coleman).” Saying otherwise climate change is fake. However, ninety-seven percent of climate scientists will disagree with that statement. According to NASA Global Climate Change “vital signs of the planet”, “ninety-seven percent of climate scientists agree that climate-warming trends over the past century are very likely due to human activities (vital signs of the planet).” Nevertheless, Fox news has been reporting that climate change is natural, wind farms

Throughout the earth’s history, global climate patterns have fluctuated, with these climate patterns going through glacial retreat and advance (NASA 2014). Currently the earth is experiencing a retreat, this significant trend single handily points to human influence being the dominant cause of the observed temperature rise in global climate patterns since the mid-century (NASA 2014). The warming of global climate systems is undisputable supported by unprecedented observations, based upon direct measurements and remote sensing from satellites and other platforms (IPCC 2013, pg.2). The IPCC (2013) outlines climate change as “a change of climate which is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of the global atmosphere”.

Earth is one of many planets in the universe that holds enough oxygen and water to support life. Unfortunately, the planet is suffering due to endless amounts of environmental problems which will result in major consequences for daily life. Today; global warming, deforestation and environmental degradation are the biggest issues this planet continues to fight against.

One of the most longstanding and most passionately debated topics in the scientific community today is based on conceptions of global warming. The one aspect that the scientific community seems to agree on is the fact that since the mid to late 19th century, just prior to the Industrial Age, the earth has increased its annual median temperature. Some scientific theories, however, state that this effect has largely to do with humanity's propensity for burning fossil fuels, and speculate that this tendency will wreak devastating consequences on the earth due to this fact. On the other side of the debate lies those who state that these perceived effects of global warming is a hoax, as is the effect of humanity on the earth's average median temperature,

Since the 1980’s, climate scientists have constantly been telling the public that their actions were determining the Earth’s demise. They say that the polar ice caps are melting, sea levels are rising, and 1,700 coastal cities will be underwater by 2100 (Struss). And the public believes them. Little do they know that these alarmists are mistaken. Ice levels are growing, not shrinking. In fact, in May 2014, Antarctic sea ice grew to nine million square kilometers, blowing past the previous record set in 2008. (Bastasch). This is the exact opposite of what the original climate scientists predicted, and it makes one consider what else they got wrong. Turns out, climate scientists have manipulated many of their statistics but continue to sway the public to their claims. Even though the majority of people throughout the world believe in human-induced global warming, the evidence proving this is flawed, misleading, and not well supported.

The issue of global warming should be on the list of our top priorities. Studies show that the average of global temperatures have risen since the Industrial Revolution began. Since the Industrial Revolution, human emissions has quadrupled the frequency of certain heat extremes and many scientists have warned that a failure to bring greenhouse gases under control could eventually lead to a 62-fold increase in extreme heat blasts (Gillis Justin A17). Most of the increase is due to human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. These activities contribute to a build-up in carbon dioxide and other gases in Earth’s atmosphere. The Earth’s atmosphere is made of gases like nitrogen, carbon dioxide and oxygen. These gases act as a blanket that covers and gives us warmth, but once these gases such as carbon dioxide absorbs heat, but does not release it back into space in which causes the increase in global temperature. This is called the greenhouse effect because it only traps heat but does not release it.

For decades, scientists have been warning world governments about the threat that global warming poses to life on Earth. The scientists have raised the alarm numerous times, even as the effects become noticeable today. But why then, as the effects of global warming are becoming more obvious as time passes, have countries like the US, Australia, and Canada done nothing to address the problem? As Kiribati, the Solomon Islands, Fiji, and other pacific island nations sink due to rising seas perpetuated by global warming, these countries have been accelerating the demise of these small island nations by not only refusing to address the problem of climate change, but by throwing gasoline at the fire as they embrace dirtier sources of fossil fuels. The answer to why there’s inaction on global warming lies on the internal situation of these nations, which have similar things in common, such as concern that taking action to mitigate global warming would have devastating effects on their respective country’s economies, but most importantly, because of the lack of interest by the public to deal with the problem, which is only being worsened by a disinformation campaign being led by fossil fuels companies.
