The revolving role of artists from craftsmen to independent artists, a more widespread incorporation of secular subjects into works of art, and the development of individual artistic styles and techniques. Dependence on community was a distinguished idea of the Middle Ages. Craftsmen belonged to a guild that dictated all aspects of their business. This ensured craftsmen earned money, while reinforcing the idea that no one should do better than others. In the Renaissance, this changed. The importance of individuals and individual talents were stressed. Painters in the Middle Ages were inspired by the Bible, while Renaissance painters looked to the classics and mythology for inspiration. While medieval Renaissance art glorified the humanity of the individuals being portrayed. While artistic technique, styles, and materials stayed relatively constant during the Middle Ages, the Renaissance was a period of rapid change and development.

Art has been a factor of our life as long as humanity has existed. For thousands of years, art has been created, observed, critiqued, and enjoyed by human beings in many regions across the world. Art aren’t just murals, sculptures, music, books or anything that someone may define as art but more of a bigger picture like if has a deeper meaning such a message or a theme that is looked upon. Art can be viewed at as many different ways in terms of people having different reactions or observing it in a different meaning. Someone could feel that the art work is very extraordinary and unique but someone else can have a different reaction and feel like it is no different than other artworks and have a literalist view upon the art. In this life, there are many forms of art or art “movements” to speak of. How we interpret art is a very subjective thing. What a person sees and feels when looking at art greatly depends on their upbringing, their values, and even their mood at the time of viewing. Could something dark and lacking color be art? What about a comic strip in the newspaper or the billboard down the street? Again, interpretation and taste in art is individual. I elected to explore into the two art movements I like the least to potentially better understand them, and to potentially link them together.

Art has evolved and regenerated itself many times during our human existence. These differences are defined through changes in styles under various theories. During the nineteenth and early twentieth century, a style known as Expressionism became popular. During this movement the artists were trying to use their artwork as a tool of expression toward life. It was mainly dominant in the nonrepresentational arts, such as abstract visual arts and music. It also was probably one of the most difficult movements to understand because the whole point of the piece lay within the artist. Not only was it a movement, it defined the act of art as a whole. Post-modern artist have a lot more freedom to express themselves as well as the events of the time and the society that they live in. I wouldn’t consider it a relapse at all, but rather a better way for expression. Art can be found in a variety of different places these days, it’s no longer combined to the studio, so artists even use small islands to create art. They also are no longer limited to the brush and paint, but are using all sorts of materials to create a meaningful piece. Some of the more extreme artist even used blood in their works of art. Art has been a recurring part of history from the very beginning. As society changes so does the style of art. Each new style is known as a movement and one of the most prominent, long-lasting movements in recent centuries is known as Modernism. Modernism is characterized by its deviation from tradition. People who are a part of this movement found enjoyment in finding new mediums to use, creating art that revolves around feelings and emotions rather than reality. Abstract idealisms of modernism cause its viewers to need to think more critically about the art before them. In past movements, the meaning of the work was obvious as it was created to mimic reality.

Provided that an artist had been one of the most noble professions at this time in France, approbation at the Salon was one of the highest esteems a French artist could be bestowed with, so failure to get in was absolutely mortifying. The Impressionists gathered at Cafe Guerbois regularly for meetings, and they weighed the advantages and disadvantages of the Big Fish/ Little Fish conundrum. The artists had to establish an arrangement that best suited them and their vision. Although the Impressionists had made it through the Salon on a few rare occasions, they were condemned to the dépetior or lost in the vast sea of thousands of other paintings. They had come to the decision that they would try their luck creating their own art show.

A Japanese postmodern artist Yayoi Kusama, had an art technique of drawing and painting dots. Her art form was influenced by her psychological problems in which she expressed herself in an artistic form of painting dots. Both literature arts and the visual arts uses different techniques to express themselves whether it be modern or postmodern. Postmodern art use a lot of different techniques to express themselves and manipulate the audience in an entirely different way like how Kusama had expressed herself in a different way than artists have previously done before. Postmodernism started after WWII and used a happier and sometimes an ironic tone in their creations. Modernism started in the 20th century and were sometimes difficult to understand the pieces of art and writing. It is the departure of traditional arts and a movement in the arts to create new styles and techniques. The new form of art often causes conflict and sorts of negative reaction to those viewing because of its new art form that questions many people. The new form of art are subjective and creates different reactions that often tends to question what art really is in general. Both modernism and postmodernism uses many of the similar authorial techniques but uses different tones in the writings. Many of the authorial techniques they use are imagism, fragmentation, motifs, mutations, and many other techniques to create an effect.

Art during the early renaissance time period was mostly commissioned by wealthy and powerful families. Ruling families were accepted by the average public. These families commissioned various and lavish artworks.

Postmodern art decided to make revolutionary break with past and questioned previous theories known as “big narratives” of art, politics, economics and overall culture in order to create new theories. The big part of postmodern theory deals with the belief of preexistence of the art all around us. The artist is the one who can recognize these elements of art around as and synthesize them into the art work. This art work becomes object of interpretation which inevitably varies among different generations, social groups, national group, religious groups, and depends on some extent of the educational level of the observers and it is also different in the same individual in different times or environments. Art can also be a controversial at the same time. There are many people who express their idea of art in a way that, in my opinion, should not be seen by the public. For example, many people consider paintings of naked women to be art, as do I, but I do not think it is appropriate for a painting of that nature to become a piece of public art. Postmodern art is typically anti-establishment and rebellious, the beginning of postmodern art can be found in the late 1950’s-1960’s although the term was first used around 1970. The movement differed from previous movements as it deliberately went against the rules, artists used many different disciplines within one piece of work. A core value of postmodern art is that it is for everyone and tries to be a connection between art and everyday life.
