The Joys Of Buying The Lottery

In the short story, The Lottery, Jackson applies Mr. Summers’ character to highlight his significant role in the village’s life as a whole and more particularly in the lottery. It is also significant to note that the character is also a deep irony in relation to the plot of the story. Mr. Summers is the most notable figure and an important person of all the people who manage the lottery. The lottery is held on June 27th, which is noted as being a full summer day. He is responsible for running most of the things that the village collectively performs since he has the energy and time and is devoted to the civic activities. This is one of the rationales why his character is pivotal to the development of the plot of the story.

It was the morning of June 27th, ten years after Tessie Hutchinson was stoned to death. So much had happened during this decade after her death. Horace Dunbar was stoned last year, and Mrs. Graves the year before. The village now consisted of about 500 citizens, and with the village growing every year the lottery became more and more necessary for the town to prosper. But still people doubted the value of the lottery and tried to preclude it. Back when the year Tessie was stoned, the Adams were talking about how other towns were giving up the lottery. Every year there were a larger amount of people opposing the lottery.

The lottery offers a wonderful opportunity to possibly win millions of dollars. While this might seems amazing, it might not be as wonderful as imagined. In fact, maybe even the opposite might true as stated by numerous studies and research done since the 1970s.

Shirley Jackson’s choice of point of view in “The Lottery” is that of being told in the third person. The story is told more by an observer’s point of view rather than that of a participant. In “The Lottery” she illustrates how what is being done to the family members, of people in the village, is an act of pointless bloodshed. It isn’t clear as to why they carry on with the ancient rite but what is clear is that the people in the village are obedient to the past law and are unwilling to see the whole thing for what it is, senseless killing. Jackson’s third person view is crucial to the plot of the story because it allows the illumination of the fact that the villagers, led by Mr. Summers who had assumed the

Following the crowd can have disastrous consequences is something both first they came by Martin Niemoller and The lottery by Shirley Jackson have in common. But for different reasons. Both stories are different but are also the same. Both stories share the same theme but for different reasons. So these two stories have a lot in common but somethings that are different, so in this essay I will talk about how they are the same and also different.

“The Lottery” is a short story written by Shirley Jackson and published in 1948. The title of the story initially leads readers to believe the story is going to be about someone winning some kind of prize. Even the opening of the story seems to protest any foul play or cruel behavior. What the reader is introduced to is a seemingly friendly gathering of a small village community, members all gathered around anxiously awaiting their drawing for the lottery. The village members all chatter amongst one another in a tone that kind neighbors would take with one another. To the surprise of the reader, the story provides a shocking twist. My entire semester was devoted to the in-depth analysis of the lottery, and the debate of it being a blessing or a curse. In relation to the lottery and the controversy I thought it would be more beneficial in this documentary project to actually show you, which brought me to animaker. In the animated video I illustrate four characters, one which in fact wins the lottery and becomes a different person. In the video it takes you through the altercations of his psychological, behavioral, and social health endanger and altered for the worse just as it was explained in the argumentative research essay. The girl in the video named Zana explains why the lottery initiates the ruins of a person, there was also two others that is presented in the video that argued against her points. However in regards to their argument she show them the reasoning in a visual way through Matt’s testimony. Psychologically

Time flies and here comes to nearly the end of the semester, which is also the end of Grade Nine. We have finished several writing assignment. This revision project has helped me find my improvement and weakness. I can know what and how to improve in order to write better.

The story of the lottery engaged many readers to convey the effect it had on them. The Lottery was a very interesting story. The overall meaning to me is that tradition should be questioned and changed in someway if it doesn’t make sense like in this story. Few people in the village had questioned the importance of this tradition but have been ignored by other villagers.

In her short story, “The Lottery”, Sheila Jackson invites us into the square of a small village on a warm summer day (247). It is not just any day. It is the 27th of June; an annually anticipated day for this community (Jackson, 247). The scene is described to depict a pre-technology era, most likely resembling an early American town. They have postal service, a school, and a bank, but no mention of devices, such as telephones, or modern transportation is made. (Jackson, 247). It is possible that the author wanted to represent the very basic elements in our humanity when choosing the setting.
