The Kite Runner Essay Gurbaaz Mangat The feminist lens examines female equality and how it is portrayed in the story. The lens mainly focuses on how women function, how they are portrayed, and the limited privileges they have for being a women who lives in Afghanistan. The author of “The Kite Runner” Khaled Hosseini represents to the reader how the women in Afghanistan are being treated and their lifestyle. A major problem which is viewed through the feminist lens is gender inequality. Throughout the book women are not treated equal to the men. The two genders were divided by the powerful (Men) and the powerless (Women). Afghanistan is still the same today than it was in the book. Women still get mistreated by men, they suffer from abuse, and they have little freedom as they can’t leave their homes. The men of Afghanistan have alienated women from doing anything other than housework. The past and present of the Afghanistan has not changed in the way women are treated. The Taliban still dominate Afghanistan, and have not changed the way they treat people. The male dominance of the Taliban is a scary reality to women. No women stand up to stop the dominance that the male portray. One women did try but she was abused by the Taliban, “So she asked louder and suddenly a young Taliban man ran over and hit her on the thighs with a wooden stick. He struck her so hard that she fell down. He was screaming and cursing at her telling her that the ministry of Vice and Vulture does not allow women to speak loudly” (Pg. 216). This quote represents the abuse women deal with in Afghanistan when trying to stand up for their rights and freedom. The male dominance in Afghanistan
