The UN had failed to resolve conflict in Rwanda there is still some little minor conflict going on in Rwanda this day. The UN had put up some camps for the tutsis and helped alittle for people to seek shelter and safety. The hutus knew that the UN could not do anything physical because they are primarily peacekeepers and trying to resolve the problem so the hutus was still killing everyone so nothing was resolved.

It is important to study the immediate and gradual causes of the genocide. A good understanding of the devastating Rwandan genocide can help prevent a repeat of such violent events. There were numerous situations that led to the murders, but some could have had a greater impact than others. Two of the biggest causes of the genocide were the assassination of Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana and the hostility between the Hutus and Tutsis. The animosity between the two groups was built up over hundreds of years, while Habyarimana’s assassination was an incident that took place within hours of the beginning of the genocide. Habyarimana’s death seemed to be a trigger for the genocide, but the conflicts between the Hutus and Tutsis could have played an even larger role in the mass murders of thousands of Rwandans. The past relationship between the two groups must be studied in order to understand how they were able to reach a genocide.

They also had truces now with other organizations, like the UNFR. There was a organization called the Lord’s Resistance Army and they would attack the country. They kidnapped children and caused more people to flee. They killed many people in Uganda to rebel. Uganda tried to contact them to stop this rebelling, but they did not. Uganda tried to meet up with the leader of the group, but they did not show up. Uganda is putting a lot of effort into trying to settle things with the LRA, but the LRA does not want to settle any of their disputes. Uganda wants everything to be mostly peaceful again, but they cannot do that without the LRA stopping their unnecessary attacks against Uganda. The LRA and Ugandans end up signing a truce after having several peace talks, causing a ceasefire.

“Remotely Global: Village Modernity in West Africa” by Charles Piot is a book based on the lives of the people of the remote village called Kabre located in Northern Togo. The author discusses the “vernacular modernity” of the people of Kabre village that has been influenced by a long tradition of encounters with outsiders that included the colonialists. The author provides an in-depth analysis with ethnographic details about the Kabre people as the author discusses a wide range of their culture and history that included houses and the structure of homestead, gender ideology, ritual like initiations, exchange system, and social relations (Piot 178).

In 1975, approximately 2 million former government employees, army personnel and intellectuals were executed in the hands of the Cambodian leader, Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge, while others were killed by disease, exhaustion and malnutrition (Document 2). Similarly, in 1989, students in Tiananmen Square were murdered as machine guns shot “right at the chests and heads of the students” (Document 3). In the Rwandan Genocide of 1994, approximately 500,000 people were raped, tortured, beaten and killed; and the UN Security Council failed to reinforce the troops they sent as their mandate restricted them from stopping the killing. During the 100 days of the brutal massacre known as the Rwandan Genocide, between 800,000 to a million people were tragically murdered. Tutsis were not the only ones being killed. Hutus were also being killed for various reasons. If people thought they felt regretful for what they were doing to the Tutsi, they would be killed. If the Hutus tried to help the Tutsi in anyway they were killed. Many of the Hutus were killed if they opposed the killing campaign and the forces directing it.

From the dawn of time up to current day, genocides have been happening throughout history. Some earlier genocides have not even been recorded or documented. Most genocides also share similar reasons for occurring. Genocides happen because one group wants complete control and absolute power over another. For instance, people can be killed for having different ideas or not being similar to to the opposing group. It is clear that genocides only end with senseless and brutal discrimination which results in many deaths. From 1975 to 1979, Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge carried out a genocide in Cambodia killing all people who seemed to oppose them and their communist government (“The Cambodian Genocide”).

Among the dead were children and pregnant women. Rape in villages by government officers and local police was, like in the case of the Darfur genocide, an often occurrence. Victims were disposed of and often their identifiable information, were burned (Spalding 29-33). The torture, mutilation, and disturbing murders of neighbors by average citizens, in addition to the governmental militia acts of ethnic cleansing show extermination throughout the course of the Rwandan genocide.

The assassination of Habyarimana in April of 1994 set off even more violence during which Hutu groups conducted mass killings of Tutsis. The genocide was supported and coordinated by the national government as well as local military. Along with the local military, primary responsibility for all of the Tutsi killings lies with two Hutu militias that were organized for this purpose by political parties, the Interahamwe and the Impuzamugambi. Although once the genocide began, a great number of Hutu civilians took parts in the murders as well. There was no peace agreement in place at this point, the Tutsi rebels started their offensive, defeating the army and seizing control of the country.

Uganda is a country located in Africa that is surrounded by Kenya and the Republic of Congo. Uganda’s capital is Kampala and some other major cities would be Gulu, Lira, Mbarara, Jinja, Bwizibwera, Mbale, Mukono, Kasese and Masaka. The coordinates are 1 00 N, 32 00 E and the total area of Uganda is two hundred forty one thirty eight thousand. The land is one hundred ninety seven hundred thousand square kilometers and the water being forty three nine hundred thirty eight thousand square kilometers. When you are comparatively speaking about Uganda it is just slightly smaller than the state of Oregon.

It is the national language of Tanzania and the official language of Kenya (African Languages). It is also the official in German East Africa (Reader 265). Approximately 50 million people speak this language (African Languages).
