The stage was set. After nearly seven years, Sony and Microsoft unveiled the next generation of home video gaming consoles in 2013. Both gamers and developers buzzed with excitement. The two biggest companies in the gaming industry had finally decided to upgrade the consoles they offered to provide a more beautiful and enjoyable experience. And, just like every generation of video game consoles, there were fierce competition in the gaming console market. Sony unveiled the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft unveiled the Xbox One. Both of these consoles were going to be released at the end of the year. Headlining the slogan “This Is For The Players”, the commercial is viewed through the eyes of a passenger in a cab. This passenger, through the window sees an urban city filled with both regular people as well as an eclectic cast of video-game character. This juxtaposition creates a surreal world that is full of adventure. As the commercial progresses, the intensity grows even more and the world becomes even more surreal. The PlayStation 4 (Abbreviated as the PS4) is shown at the end of the commercial, highlighting that this adventurous world can be accessed through the PlayStation4.
Also in the commercial is a voiceover from a man who states the kinds of people that would love to buy a PS4, using the same sentence structure. Every sentence uttered by the narrator begins with “This is for …” And at the end the narrator states “This is PS4.” Thus clarifying what “This” is. The advertisement has a simple and direct message which is: The PS4 is made solely for the players to play games and nothing more. The language used in the commercial is simple and repetitive. According to Charles O’ Neil, the use of simple language is favorable to the advertisers because a message that is easy to understand can be easily and quickly understood by the modern people who have a limited attention span. (O’ Neil) Also apparent, is the subtle wordplay used in the ad. “For” has the same phonetic sound as the number 4. Thereby, the ad associates the number 4
“You sitting on the couch! Do you even game, bro!? Well if you do come down here to Walmart where we now sell Playstations and Xboxes!” These is what you usually hear from companies on commercials these days and you get excited cause their selling gaming consoles. Now you’re stuck in a conundrum you don’t know which to buy a Playstation or Xbox, so even though they have a few major differences they are also extremely alike.
The videogame industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the entertainment business world. There are literally millions of players out there who are always seeking to buy the best titles that may appeal to them, but how does a company convinces the players that their title is what they are looking for?. Such is the case of one of 2016’s most recent titles: “Tom Clancy’s the Division” a third person shooter, open world, and RPG (role playing game) who has managed to achieve a lot of attention by portraying a world that has been devastated by a deadly disease and you are the only hope to save what remains. Subsequently, this advertisement is excellent when it comes to move your emotions as well as interest by letting you know that this game has some of the most addictive aspects that videogames have to offer.
In the business competition, companies place advertisements with a vested interest in intriguing consumers to buy their product in order to gain profit. In the November 2014 issue of Game&Fish, Yeti's advertisement is placed to influence outdoorsmen to purchase its cooler. In this advertisement, Yeti uses specific word choice, imagery, and placement as propaganda tactics to increase the demand for its cooler.
To understand high-end game console in 21st century, It is important to consider the similarities and differences between Xbox One and Play Station 4. The industry that I have chosen to analyse within this essay is Games Consoles; this particular industry was chosen because I have a personal interest and knowledge of the market, which I believe, will help me towards analysing it. The Games consoles industry includes both static and portable consoles, static consoles being devices which are played through a television as opposed to portable devices which can be played on phones and tablets. According to (Mintel 2014) there is currently a 'big three ' who dominate the static games consoles - Xbox, PlayStation and Wii. All three of these games consoles are owned by separate companies. Xbox is developed by Microsoft, PlayStation developed by Sony and Wii developed by Nintendo. Currently within the market there are two consoles for each of Xbox and PlayStation, as 2014 sees the first year that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have been on sale since it was released in November 2013. These join the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles which have now been on the market for many years.
