The United States has the highest rate of unplanned teen pregnancies amongst the most developed countries in the world. As a counselor, my primary focus would be to ensure that Nikki’s emotional and mental distress is resolved. As we know, adolescence is a stage of development during which, teenagers go through physical, social, cognitive and emotional changes. Some examples include self-identity, peer pressure, conflict with family and sexuality. As far as the 14 year old Nikki’s situation is concerned, she is not only having a difficult time coping with her parents’ divorce but she is also pregnant and is considering abortion.
My mother always said “You are a princess and your body is a temple, so treat it like one”. As I grew up, that was the phrase that made a profound impact on my childhood. My parents felt that for me to be confident and successful, I would have to be at peace emotionally and physically during the most crucial years of my growth. They always said “Do not become another one of the statistics!”. In my early teenage years I believed that they kept me sheltered, but now in my freshmen year of college, I could not be more thankful for their guidance and protection. At the time I did not understand what she meant, but after my years in high school it all made sense. I, like many other teens, would gain knowledge on relationships and sexuality. In this country teen pregnancy has high increase in minorities, one of the main reasons why the population is expanding. It is through proper knowledge of sexuality and protection that female teens are able to prevent pregnancy.

Teens that get pregnant at a young age can experience medical complications because their young bodies are still developing. Most teens do not seek proper medical care during pregnancy, either due to shame or hiding it from parents. A lack of medical care can lead to complications like toxemia, anemia, high blood pressure and even premature delivery. Teens younger than age 15 have a high chance of receiving anemia, or low blood iron. Anemia can cause extreme tiredness and other complications. About 14% of pregnant women develop anemia. This condition occurs in higher rates in teen pregnancies because of the insufficient amount of healthy caloric intake needed during pregnancy. While not all premature births lead to complications, there are some very significant health risks associated with premature deliveries in general. Without question, this alarming statistic makes one realize that some females are skipping their young teenage years and moving toward parenthood. As a result, some parents will let their anger get the best of them and kick their children out of their home, while some will feel the stress of helping their child raise a baby. Parents can feel overwhelmed that it can lead them to depression because they feel they failed to bring their child up properly.
