In the adaptation of novel to film, often details of the story are lost in translation, as seen in the exposition of the Martian. The beginning of the film was extremely short compared to the novel, and communicated much less. The book was able to convey more information and make the story more personable to the audience. The composition of the film exposition was extremely short and in a different order than the novel. Despite the uniqueness exposition of the film, its effectiveness was less compared to the novel. The novel included small important details that allowed the audience to be part of the story rather than read it from a 3rd person viewpoint. In the adaptation of the film, The Martian, the exposition was altered such that the …show more content…
The film adapted the beginning of the story much differently, and much quicker than the novel, thus creating a subtle transition. The film evacuated 5 members of the Ares 3 crew from Mars, and immediately cut to the assumption that Mark Watney was dead (Weir). By that point the main dilemma of the story had been stated, and the exposition was nearly over. The book had a different approach to the expression of the story. After introducing Mark Watney through the log entry, the log entry became a very powerful tool to tell the story. Using the log entry, the entire exposition was told. The log entry system created a much longer, detailed exposition than that of the film, making it more effective and intriguing. Eventually, the point of view was set back to earth and the memorial service of Watney, finishing the exposition and continuing the story (Weir). By introducing the exposition through different lengths and viewpoints, the story’s effectiveness changed drastically.
The effectiveness of a story is firstly based from the exposition, and how well the reader is intrigued by the story. The book’s strategy and execution of expressing the exposition was much more effective than the film’s. The novel included humorous dialogue from Mark Watney that was able to interest the reader throughout the story. Similar dialogue existed in the film, but not nearly as much as the book. After a hard day of work, Watney logged an entry saying, “I slept in late today. I deserved
An example would be the bombing of Baba-Levy's house. In the book, the bombing occurred while Marjane was at the mall on her way to her house. The movie showed this scene close to the last section of the first half of the movie and didn't mention her at the mall. The text however, showed a clear description of her reaction to the news of the bombing and running to her house for fear of her neighbors and her family's safety. In total, the text summarized and transitioned the plot better than movie.
The Alien is a science fiction horror movie. Its setting in space and the presence of technology and artificial intelligence empathizes on its science fiction genre. Moreover, the presence of the Alien and the fact that it is a threat to human lives reflects it is also a horror film. The movie revolves around seven human beings that have the mission to return to earth from the space.
Finally there are lots of differences between the book and the movie. They also show that the movie was a lot weaker then then the book. I can see the movies aren't always better than the books. The books go more into detail than the movie. I enjoined the movie because it is more visual. The book was a little
I feel that as a reader they could tell me how he felt compared to showing me how he felt. The actor in the movie really showed me how he felt and in the book told me how he felt. The actor in the movie really showed the emotion and determination to get home to his family again, this was shown so well to me I felt like I was in the same situation, all the horrible things that happened to him happened to me.The examples were the reason I felt the book and the movie were different.
novel is much more enlightening than the movie, but it takes more time to read the novel than it does to
I have chosen to write about the Movie Apollo 13 Mission. This is one of our family favorite movies. The main cast of The Apollo 13 are Two main characters that are mentioned in the film Apollo 13, were Gene Kranz, played by (Ed Harris) and Jim Lovell played by (Tom Hanks). Both actors exhibit a style of leadership that we have been leading throughout this course called transformational leadership. Jack Swigert was also played by Kevin Bacon, and Ken Mattingly played by (Gary Sinise).
With many scenes taken away because some characters are never mentioned took away a lot of the overall meaning of the story. I didn’t feel to relate to the movie as much as I did with the novel. Leaving an apt amount of scenes out, took away some of the anticipation I was building up to. Which made me a bit disappointed.
We see in the movie that the directors had to make many changes. The changes usually included cutting non important scenes, for the book was to long to keep everything in. I feel that they picked correctly with most of the scenes, but I do think that some scenes were important enough to get in. While dropping some scenes they also dropped some important characters and themes, some I believe were essential in the book.
In the story the ideas and meaning have time to develope to the reader, getting the main ideas (censorship/ peer pressure ) to the reader with a better understanding. In the movie the idea are not always clear as like they were in the book. In the book we had time to see censorship working at 100% and slowly decay until the main character guy montag had a mental breakdown. In the movie we are given a problem within the first 10 minutes and are then rushed into the next problem. For example when his plane goes down in the next 5 minutes he up and chasing after the profit trying to solve the case. When you look at the book, there is a a small resolution to each problem the character faces. For example when in the book when beatty. finds the book. He goes to montag's house to talk with him and slowly snowballs in the climax. When montag is chased out of the city and kills
In the Movie the opening scene starts out at the movies where the book goes into explaining everything before hand, who what when where and why. But in the end of the book there is a courtroom case over the idea if their brother should have custody of his brothers, “I’d put off everything about the judge and the hearing for as long as I could. Soda and Darry didn’t like to talk about it either, so we were all silent counting off the days while I was sick, counting the days we had left together.” The movie, cut that out of the story and just ended it on Dally getting killed in the park by the
The first noticeable difference was Old Major’s death. In the book, after he gives his speech, he dies peacefully in his sleep three days later. In the movie however, Old Major is shot accidentally by Mr. Jones, who was trying to quiet the animals during the night. This change in the story was a welcome addition, used to highlight Mr. Jones’ cruelty and showing the oppression the animals were
Many of y’all think that a movie is better than a book because y’all don’t like reading. Neither do i, but in this specific movie and book I liked the book a little better. The reason why is because the book gave more detail about certain situation. For example when lennie imagined about Aunt Clara and the big rabbit. That was not in the movie at all.
“The Mission” is a film that gives a historically accurate depiction of the events that took place in South America around 1750, displaying the jesuit missions and their attempt at expanding missionary ventures in the area. These missions foresaw the Jesuits going to uncharted areas of the jungle inhabited by the Guarani people, demonstrating the significance assimilating the Guarani people meant to the Jesuits. Additionally, the Guarani people were accurately displayed as a self-sustained society where basic components such as: productivity, protection, justice regulations and a form of a leader was evident in the form of their King. Nonetheless, the Guarani were an isolated group of individuals who were secluded to the outside world; their only contact with outside personnelles were slave traders who would put them into forced slavery for personal benefits. Not to mention the “Treaty of Madrid”, which resulted in the social and political disputes between the, Portuguese, Spanish and Catholic community; manifesting in the form of territorial conflicts and misunderstandings amongst the three vigorous societies, where each have a different purpose for the Guarani people.
Due to the text’s complexityz and the author’s peculiar writing style, it took me quite a while to get into the story, thus reducing my reading speed considerably. But, once I was one third into the book, I started to really enjoy it and, as the narrative became more and more complex, I became aware of how much the book and the movie differ.
In this movie, they take out many parts from the book. This does not necessarily change a lot of the initial concepts but it has an effect. When something is taken out, like a suicide attempt, it takes the intensity out of the movie that was received from the book. Though the movie teaches the lesson that the book does, it does not have the strength it did as in the book. That connect people get from reading
