Family
What does your family look like? Is it big or small? The fact is that family’s come in all shapes and sizes. So what is a family? Webster’s dictionary defines family as “a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household.” However, I feel that this this is not the only qualification of being a member of the family. Family members should love each other unconditionally and bring each other happiness, family members should always be there for each other and take care of each other in hard times, and lastly family members should give advice and comfort. Family should love each other unconditionally and bring each other happiness. Friends are the family you choose the old saying goes. But is this really so far from the truth? In Michelle Blessings article “Meaning of Family” she states, “Many people consider friends to be as close or even closer than extended (or immediate) family…This type of family unit, while untraditional, can be just as close, if not closer, than a traditional structure. Friends are chosen by an individual; at times, these people may be more special or important than the family a person was born with.” Studies show that having good friends is important to the growth and development of individuals. Sometimes when individuals have lost close family members it makes it even easier for friends to step in and fill the void. These friends bring smiles and happiness and are very understanding. Having friends is important and the
What is family? It is defined as “a group of people related to one another by blood or marriage.” Three acclaimed authors: Shakespeare, Pope and Eliot, identify family in many different ways, some that are similar and some that are different from each other. To clearly understand how they all variously define family you need to dive deep into the context of their works. A couple of the authors use a textbook example of family and others create their own idea of the concept.
does not necessarily mean one needs to be blood related to be considered as family. Anything can be
Family is a word with diverse meaning. The Oxford Dictionary defines it as ” A group of people consisting of two parents and their children living together as a unit.” This definition is known to be the most common stereotype in North America. “ This definition doesn 't comply with other cultures”, for example, the African concept of family states that “ Family is considered a basic cell of society. All social and cultural practices find their connection with a notion of family, either supporting or distorting it”. This definition relate more so to how Fedorak explains family on pg 106. Family is a big part of what defines how close knit a community is, jutted based on how different the definitions are we can how much closer African families are then North American families . In Canada, our society is changing. We are transitioning to a new style of living which is isolating family tradition and practice. I (A child who grew up in Canada) have grown up with two parents and two siblings. I have noticed stereotypes in my community that encourage young adults like myself to become an adult, marry and have children following in the footsteps of my father and his fathers before him. This is the driving factor as to why families in the past were so simple. I’m going to give you a perspective on how families in North America are moving away from what is known as “Nuclear Families” and into what is known as modern.
Many people have different opinions about what define family. For example, Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines family as “A group of people living together.” I disagree with
Definition of family: The Western world regards the family as consisting of two or more people who consider themselves related by blood, marriage, or adoption; also known as a nuclear family. The extended family includes grandparents, aunts, cousins, etc.
The definition of family to me are the people who are in my life loving, supporting and caring for myself and others in my family. My personal definition of family goes against the traditional definition as I believe nonblood related people are considered my family (i.e., really close friends). There are many changes in the American family over the last several decades that demand a change to the definition of family. There are more gay and lesbian couples forming families, people of different races marrying and more women who are single raising children without a male partner (Seccombe, 2015, p. 2). All of these are examples of how and why the definition of family is changing. Additionally, American families are changing due to social trends
A family is two or more people who consider themselves family and who assume obligations, functions, and responsibilities generally essential to healthy family life. (Barker, 1999. p.155). Families create patterns that are passed on from grandparents to parents and from parents
There are many different ways to define the word family, which makes it difficult to create a true definition. I believe that all families are unique in the ways they communicate, grow, nurture, support and express cultures. My family is a traditional nuclear family that means the family consists of two parents and their children. In my family, I am the eldest sibling which means I am responsible for being a role model and mentor for my younger sibling. My family is known for being considerate through our daily actions. A specific incident that shows our consideration is when we helped nurse a sick dog back to health. I am glad to be a part of my amazing family.
Family is a term that is everyone is familiar with and in the English language it has a multitude of uses. The word family originated from Latin and was actually called familia. Familia was used for describing a family or servants. Fast forward to the 21st century and we use this word for everything from relatives to a way to classify an organism. Now I agree that all of these definitions of family make sense in the ways that they are used, but the common way of thinking about family I think should interpreted differently. As for a certain few people with, myself included, they may not be very close or be in good standing with their families and with that being said a new type of family tends to be created. Family comes down to four core qualities to me; being a close friend whom I am able to open up to, loyalty, trust, and being compassionate.
What is a family? To me the word family has so many meanings, but to me it’s a group of people who will always be in your life no matter what. Having a family means that you have people that will never leave you hanging. A family is a pack, a bond. My definition comes from seeing how my family operates and no matter what, they always show love to one another. My family is Guyanese, meaning they came from the Caribbean island Guyana. Our culture revolves music, food and being very social. This involves a lot of parties and family gatherings, allowing us to always see each other and keep in touch. But, how did my family get here? What was their life journey? And how did that affect me?
What is means by family? Family is a group of two or more people which have blood connection, marriage ties, adoption and which stayed in the same residence. Family plays a significance role in the child development. As family is children primary
The definition of family must be broadened and specified, it is more than just a simple collection of people. It must be changed to fulfil those in life who are dissatisfied with their family, those who lack a family, and those who merely wish to expand their family. No matter who you are, every human being needs and deserves a family, throughout their life and as they pass on to the next. The family that you create during your lifetime will be the
According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, family means “a group of people who are related to each other.” Although this definition is accurate, I feel family means so much more. Everyone has a different interpretation of what family means to them. For instance, my mother believes that family means, “A support system that is always there for you” (Burke). Another definition comes from my math teacher, she believes family means, “Having a bond with other people that you know can’t be broken” (Barrett). My friend thinks that family means, “people who will always love you even if you make mistakes, and they are people that will try their best to keep you happy and safe” (Williams). I think family means people who will be there for you
A family can be defined in many ways, but the common denominator in all is the love and fulfillment one gets by being surrounded by family members. Families can sometimes be at odds with each other, but the strain of this type of relationship usually creates an upsetting feeling to the people involved. People want others to rely on, talk to, do things with, share, love, embrace, and be part of. No matter what the family dynamic is the qualities the word family has will remain the same, as time goes by, and life evolves once again for every person living their
According to Swartz and Scott (2009), family is defined as a group of people related to each other by blood, marriage, adoption or being sexually open in a relationship. The
