The NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy) is a test produced and evaluated by the ACARA (Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority), the data helps teachers to refine the core curriculum framework, in order to address students who may require different methods of teaching to suit their learning abilities. Details relating to affective learning development in specific year levels, effects of socio economics and ethnicity on learning, are some essential details required to allow for solutions to improve learning for all, in all schools K-12 in Australia via the national curriculum (ACARA.nd,). An adults collective years of knowledge, allows problem solving to occur at great cognitive speed, the function of working out, is not often realized. To succeed in finding an explanation which makes sense to all students, requires an open mind, and the ability to create step by step break downs often simplifying problem solving, such examples of methodical breakdowns will be demonstrated in this assessment. Question 1/1 For question one I was confident as soon as I saw it, the answer is B (as the red cube configuration demonstrates), because it is a visual spatial perspective question and I am a visual thinker, it was not challenging. The instantaneous cognitive function, brought on as soon as this problem was sighted, was instinctive and therefore a very simple mental process of imagination and visualization. The visualised grouping of blocks
When addressing the reliability of the NAPLAN it is important to consider the restricted number of test items included, and how this minimises the test scope and impacts on very high and very low achievers (Howes, 2013). While the move to an online format will help address some of these, there remains a belief that the test goes against what is recognised as effective assessment practise due to an inconsistency with what is being measured and what is being taught within school curriculum (Facchinetti, 2013). It is contended that NAPLAN items are more strongly based on commonsense or traditional views which can shape the results rather than providing an accurate insight into the learning of individuals or the
As previously mentioned, children from the age of 5 to 16 who are educated in a maintained school must be taught the National Curriculum. This sets out the key stages and core subjects they will follow throughout their time at school. Within this framework, schools can plan and organise the way they teach to best meet the needs of their
The objective of EDC141: The Numerate Educator was for students to obtain the chance to develop their mathematical skills, build mathematical competency, and positively chance their disposition (as a pre-service teacher) towards the importance and the functionality of maths. The key to success is to learn from one’s mistakes and work (by practicing mathematical questions) to further improve one’s results. This I managed to do by increasing my Mathspace results from 64% to 68% (as shown in Appendices 1A). The Australian Curriculum focuses on developing student’s capabilities in six areas: number, Algebra, Geometry, measurement, statistics and probability. Using evidence from the Mathspace test results, the NAPLAN results and activities of ‘What
Although I admit NAPLAN is a useful assessment tool, we use it for the wrong purposes. It is irrational for use NAPLAN to as a student’s indicator of eligibility to sit for the HSC: it has
The aims and importance of learning provision for numeracy development are to ensure all students understand that maths is a vital part of everyday life and will continue to be used throughout their life. Primary schools will teach students to learn various methods and techniques to be able to reach the correct answer. The end goal means more students will be able to solve a mathematical problem, independently, using a method that suits them. They can then develop their learning to improve their knowledge and apply it to real life situations; such as counting in groups of numbers such as 5’s or 10’s, which in turn can be applied when paying for
Through the identification of these assessment methods, I will analyse their purpose and the role that they play in my learner’s development; and how these are used to identify learner progress and confirm their knowledge and understanding. I will explore theories and principals of assessment, covering formative and
In supporting the various ways students learn, educators need to introduce and share ideas that are relevant and understandable. Problem solving is generally the most challenging for students who experience difficulties in Math. Garguilo and Metcalf (2013) discuss the need for considerable scaffolding and direct instruction when it comes to real-life problem in mathematics. The student may be able to add and subtract to a satisfactory standard, but cannot apply skills in problem solving methods. These types of difficulties are usually seen in students with ADHD. (Garguilo & Metcalf, 2013, p. 360) Studies suggest using a combination of formal and informal assessment in identifying both group and individual strengths and learning by means of representing the problem in different modes; see and hear, touch,
Assessments are the process of evaluating an individual’s learning. They involve generating and collecting evidence of a learner’s attainment of knowledge and skills and judging that evidence against defined standards. Formative Assessments (quizzes and practical tests) are used to
Taking the Louisiana Literacy Test was frustrating to say the least. With only ten minutes to get through thirty questions, I felt rushed, uncomfortable and full of self doubt. I can’t believe you had to get every single one of them right to be able to vote. Did people they wanted to vote receive an answer key in the mail to prepare, or did the people who graded the test overlook some wrong answers for those they desired to vote? I thought I did well. I then proceeded to look up some answer keys online and realized that I got three wrong, which was infuriating because I thought I followed along with the instructions carefully, or as carefully as I could in ten minutes. After watching the video of the Harvard students not being able to pass
Students reviewed order of operations (PEMDAS) during the warm up problem. During small group work, the students reviewed the steps for solving proportion problems.
The report aims to illustrate and evaluate the Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement processes, procedures and initiatives taken by Further Education Providers, with Newcastle College FE as example for providing excellent educational services for students. Further, the report gives a personal review and analysis the role of tutor in the quality cycle
activities for literacy, numeracy, ICT and problem solving when working with children in the class.
Another way that the Common Core has its problem, is with the politics. The Common Core is only dealing with confusion of this and must be brought to attention by everyone, not just the educators of schools. Regular exams assess these lessons, and allow states to measure their progress against each other. While Christie and others claimed they are ditching Common Core, a closer look reveals that this is not quite the case.
Critics say that all NAPLAN tells us are students with a higher starting base of skill in absolute terms outperforming those from a lower starting point. The difficulty with one-off statistics is they take no notice of the starting position of the student regarding skills, nor determine any value the institution
