Effects of a Work-Study Regimen on College Students Life saving devices come in many shapes, colors, and forms, but for many college students it comes in a small bound book: an agenda. Students have been given small holographic planners to write their assignments in since elementary school. Fast forward ten years and those seemingly simple agendas are covered with dates for what seems like endless assignments and for some work schedules, but not all. Many students fear that the benefits do not outweigh the negatives when trying to cram an employment opportunity into a day already consumed with studying despite financial restrictions. Studies have concluded that students who decide to incorporate a work-study regimen into their lives, experience higher graduation rates, grade point averages and financial recovery after their post secondary education, compared to those who do not. Regardless of those benefits those same students are proven to also experience higher stress levels and more academic pressure.
As the cost of higher education rises teenagers and adults alike are being more persuaded to join the workforce on top of their full time studies. While some local communities provide scholarships for students who have shown exemplary talents or experience in an area they do not provide sufficient funds that are needed to attend a higher education program such as, a state university. In his Essay “Are too many people going to college,” first published in a 2008 issue of AEI, Charles Murray explores many insights onto the topic of furthering education as well as exploring various other options to pursue after high school. Who exactly would think that too many people are going to college? Well with more and more students flooding campuses at the end of every school year and less and less going into trade schools, a shift in the job market is just beginning to be seen on the horizon. Charles Murray’s essay “Are too many people going to college” shows that not only are there other avenues to pursue a potential life long career, but that much of the time pursuing these avenues may offer better results for some wanting to go to college.

Also it shows college students that working a full time job might not be the wisest thing to do while attending college full time. When this article was written, there was a new trend beginning to arise. In 2015, Georgetown University did a study of students who worked while in college. They found that 70 percent of students were employed while in college and 25 percent of those students are working full time while simultaneously going to college full time. This can be hard because financial aid is not given to part- time students and they may not be able to afford their classes or a caretaker. Students also may drop out because they don’t want debt in the future and can’t afford college on their own. In order to get a decent paying job, you have to have a college degree. Many people will not be able to go to college full time because they have to work part-time or full-time to be able to afford college and can not move on to a higher paying job with out it. Low income students have always struggled with college bills. Financial and political forces are making it harder than ever to get a college degree, which is crucial to getting a high paying job (Philadelphia Inquirer, 1). It is extremely difficult to get a job and go to college full or part time, just to have a higher paying job. Many students hope to avoid a soaring loan debt. They work long hours; take courses part-time and are commuting to college rather than living on campus. These compromises greatly reduce chances of earning a college degree in a timely manner if at all (Philadelphia Inquirer, 1). As a result, students must rely on even larger loan debt to get through school. Many students have to put off getting their degree and some never go back to get it.
With the workforce becoming more competitive in today’s economy, the educational requirements have increased. By the year 2020, approximately 65% of all jobs in the United States will require a postsecondary education and/or further training proceeding high school education (“Recovery”). One thing that is not increasing is the rate of college enrollment of students from the Detroit Public Schools or college enrollment in general. There are many factors that contribute to this problem, just as there are also many solutions that may help assuage it. The main reason why students from Detroit Public Schools are not enrolling in postsecondary education institutions has to do with their financial situation.
The U.S. is home to some of the greatest colleges and universities in the world. The first cause of students dropping out of college is due to the fact that they are unable to balance their work and school together. A questionnaire was completed by 42 first- and second-year students from a single degree program at the end of Semester 2. Findings - Within this group, 83 per cent of students worked at some point during term-time of their degree program. In total 58 per cent of those students who worked did so to either cover or contribute to basic costs of living.
