Life In London During The Late 1800s And Early 1900s

The Industrial Revolution brought many changes to society in the nineteenth century. With the rise of factories following the Agricultural Revolution and Enclosure Movement, it allowed goods to be readily available to the public due to mass production from having a large and available workforce. This led to further economic growth within the urban areas. While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because of this economic growth, it was actually a negative thing for society. Industrialization’s negative effects were the lack of working conditions, child labor, and horrible living conditions.

The Industrial Revolution of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries was arguably the most important turning point in history. It transformed the manufacture of goods from craftsmanship to commercialism, exponentially increasing output and decreasing production cost leading to prosperity and an unprecedented supply of goods for the markets of the world. Industrialization and mass production was the fuel which ignited the flame of capitalism which was already established creating bringing sweeping changes in wealth and its distribution. Within a few generations the very fabric of society was virtually remade as millions left the farms and villages of the countryside for jobs in the cities. The Industrial Revolution began in England in the late 1700’s. The Industrial Revolution was a time of new inventions, products, and methods of work. The results of the Industrial Revolution led to many short and long-term positive and negative effects. These results have been assessed from many viewpoints such as the factory workers, the factory owners, the government, and other people who observed the conditions in industrial cities.

From around 1750 to 1900 Britain went through major changes or transformation in industry, agriculture and transportation that affected everybody’s lives. For some it generally improved their lives, however not all were so lucky. The industrial revolution brought with it many changes good for some and bad for others.

This population boom led to not only the increased of the products but products being bought. Before this boom the quality of life was low and around 75% of kids under the age of 5 died, thanks for the growth in population that number lowered down to 30%. According to Document 15: “The Factory system led to a rise in the general standard of living, to rapidly falling urban death rates and decreasing infant mortality---and produced an unprecedented population explosion.” (15). Furthermore the overall impact of this boom gave families a source of income as children could work for the well being of the family. With the growth of population products began to be mass produced therefore making them cheaper and more accessible. A main concern in during the Industrial Revolution was bad working conditions and child labor which may have been a impact in some factories but in document 3 it states “...children would thrive better when employed in our modern factories, than if at home in apartments too often ill-aired, damp, and cold. (3). Decisively it is clear that the Industrial Revolution not only contributed to the growth in population but the growth in families, companies, and the overall well being of people. They both show how disease could be spread and how roads and the safety of factories could cause injury to workers; however this was only some factories and as the factories grew so did the necessity for safety and that danger soon turned into a safe working

The Industrial Revolution occurred in Britain and America around the late 1700’s to 1900. This revolution improved the production of goods using new mechanisms and machines. Human labor was in high demand in order for the highest production rates. Factories employed low to middle-class people that were as young as three years old (Document 9). These workers were benefited with money, shelter, and clothes, but the working and living conditions were not satisfying. At the beginning of the 19th century, Manchester had embraced the ideals of the industrial revolution, which led the city to become the industrial heart of England. Since the development of industry was on such a huge scale, there were both pessimistic and positive responses to it. Numerous were concerned about health changes due to the relegate in living standards, as well as the introduction of dangerous and un-hygienic factory, while others were more concerned with the visual appeal that the city had to offer.

In addition to being the most industrialized city, its population almost multiplied in little over a century. Since the growth of industry and urbanization was on such a large scale in such little time there were both positive and negative issues and reactions. The low standards in working condition within the factories and the health issues that came from them, alongside with the conditions of the city and overall standard of living were all issues that came from the growth of Manchester at an alarming rate.
