Introduction:
The main character and author (Bauby) of the book experienced a stroke which caused his condition of “locked-in syndrome”. Bauby had one way in which he could communicate with the outside world and this was through the use of his right eye. He even wrote the book while confined with this condition. This was done by having a transcriber say letters. Bauby would blink when she got to the letter in which he was wanting to write. This was the only means in which Bauby could communicate with the outside world in general.
The author used the only way in which he could communicate to present his central theme which was communication. The author did a superb job in presenting his theme. He wanted for others to be aware of the value of being able to communicate with others. The book also covers the full range of emotions in which a person experiences when a traumatic event happens. The author lost the ability to perform the actions in which he was accustomed. The came with the varying emotions that are experienced by the patient when the normalcy of life is withdrawn by a traumatic event.

Always be accepting of the patient even if you do not fully understand their background; be open. 3. Learn how to transform the patient’s feelings into thoughts and vice versa. If individuals in the health care field do not use this technique then they can create difficulties by using non-therapeutic communication; there are various ways to avoid non-therapeutic communication. A few examples to help improve non-therapeutic communication are avoid questions that are irrelevant to personal life, giving the patient your personal opinion or showing criticism towards the patients opinion. Another way to avoid therapeutic communication is using the term “why”. This will give off reassurance to the patient from the health care provider the patient will then become defensive. Make sure that you fully understand the patient’s feelings instead of jumping to conclusions on how the patient must feel; steer clear of the comments that you may make to the patient that could reveal your feelings because these do not matter to the patient and you do not want to lose the

A stroke is a type of cardiovascular disease that affects the cerebral arteries, those blood vessels that carry blood to the brain. A stroke occurs when one of those blood vessels in the brain is obstructed or ruptures flooding the brain with blood. Depriving blood and oxygen to the brain results in those immediate cells death, causing the brain not to function properly. First, the idea of a book written by a stroke survivor was already an intrigue to me. Stroke is known to be very damaging on people mental and physical function. So have a book written by a stoke survivor make me curious about the author’s story. I wanted to know how she was able the recover from her stroke to the point of being able to write a book about it. Jill Taylor’s history is a very suppressing life coincidence because she is a brain researcher who teaches brain and its function to medical students and she experienced herself a brain disorder and she survives it and is now able to share her story.
