The number of Americans that own guns is unclear because some people will not admit it and a lot of people own their guns illegally. “More than a third of Americans say they or someone in their household owns a gun. There are by various estimates anywhere from 270 million to 310 million guns in the United States — close to one firearm for every man, woman and child” (pewresearch.org). This statistic is very frightening. Not only is a gun available for every man in the United States but for every woman and child. The issues from having an outstanding number of guns and the guns even existing are that anyone can obtain a gun, including criminals. Guns can be accessed by children through their parents. A teenager might decide to committee suicide or shoot everyone in school. Mass murders has not stopped happening since guns were invented. Animals are hunted for fun and not for survival. Americans think that owning a gun is necessary and okay. The situation of parents teaching their children how to shoot is thought of it not being that big of a deal. One story has proven otherwise.
A mother and father decided to let their child practice shooting a fire arm. The results were a tragedy. The shooting range allowed children from ages 8 to 17 years old shoot a weapon as long as they were with a parent or guardian. Charles Vacca, a 39 years old veteran, was the instructor of the nine years old girl. The girl was successfully able to fire the weapon in single shot mode. Afterwards
Too many Americans die due to firearms. “New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof this past summer wrote an impassioned call for gun control that included a recounting of horrific gun-related statistics. Since 1968, he noted, more people have died from guns in the U.S. than on the battlefields of all the wars in American history combined” (“Technology” -Gralla 6). This country is supposed to
The United States has 88.8 guns per 100 people. As a country the United States has approximately 270,000,000 guns. Both categories top the world. 22% of gun owners own two or more firearms. This gun wave had very humble beginnings from westward expansion to the revolutionary war and to the Second Amendment. This controversial amendment states: "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
About sixty percent of people in the U.S own guns, the estimated number of guns legally owned by civilians is 270,000,000 to 310,000,000 (FBI), and that’s not counting all the illegally owned firearms. When asked why they need guns, most Americans say that its part of their rights and amendments, to protect themselves and their family. If most people with guns just want to protect themselves, why do so many people die every year from gun violence? The answer is all the illegal firearms that land in the hands of criminals and psychopaths.
Guns are created to kill. They have been used in many mass shootings and in overwhelming cases, in school shootings. The crowdedness of school campuses make them lethal. It is also no secret that the United States is the wild west when it comes to guns. According to Samantha Gupta from the Harvard Political Review, “American civilians own an astounding 270 million guns, more than the civilians of the 21 other countries that had school shootings own combined.” That is enough guns to give 84% of the population one each. This is caused by lax gun control laws and the loopholes that exist within them. The failure of the US government to implement universal background checks and bans on certain types of guns and ammunitions have allowed potentially dangerous people access to lethal weapons. And these people wreak havoc. From Gupta again, “Out of all these countries that have experienced a school shooting in the given time period, the average number of school shootings per firearm per capita is 0.111; America’s average is over five times higher.”
Gun violence has made quite an appearance on social media and major news outlets in America this year. When the Second Amendment was created it generated a permanent bond between citizens and gun. As a result of this many citizens take pride in owning a gun for mainly self-defense and recreational uses. However, this is a big issue due to all of the violence that has been occurring due to people exercising their “right to bear arm” and the loopholes in the nation’s gun laws. According to Gun Violence Archive, about 48 mass shooting incidents have occurred just in 2018. There has been at least 14 school shootings this year. Purchase of weapons has been so rapid, that there is no accurate account of fire arms in the society. The United States
It is estimated that there are as many guns as there are people (approximately 310.000.000 guns” in the US, which are held by civilians, gun shop owners,
There are almost nine guns for every ten people in the United States including children, women, and men. Gun owners believe it is a right most valued by free people throughout the United States. There’s an estimated two hundred and seventy million
First, there are too many guns in The America, the number of guns is more than US’s population, it means for average every person own a gun, include kids and old people! From October 5, 2015 ‘s The Washington Post, in 2013 there are 357million guns in the America and only 317million people. Just think about how esay for a bad guy own a gun. Even though tthe owner of those guns is kind, but it still
There are presently in excess of 200 million guns in the United States, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Each year this number grows by 4 to 5 million. There are 60 to 65 million legal owners of one or more guns.1 There is a firearm on the premises of more than half the households in America. Most gun owners keep guns for protection. Others keep them for hunting, target shooting, collecting, and similar pursuits.
Of the many problems we face in gun control it is availability of guns to the very people that don’t need them. The Sandy Hook shooting, occurring on December 14, 2012, sparked a nation wide push for stricter gun control. The shooter, a mentally ill male, shot down 26 people with a semi-automatic AR-15-- a military type assault rifle. Many Americans were left wondering how a mentally ill person would be capable of acquiring such guns. The truth is that it is not very difficult for someone to acquire such weaponry. On January 14, 2013 Brian Walsh wrote in a Time article that there was nearly one gun for every person in the U.S. We own almost, if not, half of the world 's civilian guns. Furthermore our laws and regulations are generally slack compared to other developed countries. In Canada, not only do gun owners receive a background check, they must undergo a safety gun course and have a federal registration certificate for that weapon. Japan 's laws are among the strictest: essentially banning all weapons except those used in competitions and requiring
Researchers found that 40% of citizens own or live in a home with guns, while 48% of children grow up knowing they are in arm’s reach of a weapon (Fox). This can be especially dangerous if the child lives in an abusive household or experiences mental instability because the risk of a violence outbreak is higher. Not only has America grown up with guns, but 66% of gun owners own multiple firearms and ¾ “couldn’t imagine not owning one” (Lopez). The dependence on firearms throughout America creates an obsession/attachment to the weapon, that with unfortunate mental imbalance can create a violent response to certain “trigger” situations. A restraint on the amount of guns each homeowner possesses can overall lower the possibility of a firearm in the hands of an individual who could do harm.
What is a Gun? According to Dictionary.com the definition of weapon means the following “any instrument or device for use in attack or defense in combat, fighting, or war, as a sword, rifle, or cannon.” Additionally, Google’s definition means “a thing designed or used for inflicting bodily harm or physical damage” Both definitions imply some sort of intent to harm or kill another human being. The most common type of weapon today that is used to inflict harm on others is widely known as a Gun or Rifle. About “ Thirty-nine percent of American households report owning at least one gun”(American Gun Ownership, By The Numbers). This is the percent of those who legally own a weapon. Those who do not legally own a weapon are not included. As the world becomes more violent and dangerous many feel the need for protection. Therefore, some resort to a weapon. Sadly some of these fall into the wrong hands. The statistics and deaths speaks for themselves. Something needs to be done about the use of weapons. Strict gun restrictions need to be put in place. If restrictions are put into place, and not improvement is made,
Guns are a great use to society. As mentioned before “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” - Wayne Lapierre. Guns are safe and affordable protect, that can stop many crimes. A national survey done February 2013 finds that nearly half of gun owners (48%) volunteer that the main reason they own a gun is for protection. As well as hunting is accomplished with guns. Some families rely on hunting for food or just as a hobby to bring the family together. The same national survey held in February 2013 found 32% say they have a gun primarily for hunting. On top of hunting and self-protection, guns are used widely for target/competitive shooting. In 2014, the number of participants (aged six years and older) in shooting sport amounted to approximately 8.48 million. Shooting sports help teach gun safety and can help get more people involved with their community.
175 million-350 million: the number of firearms currently available in the United States. 150 million: the number of handguns included in that amount. Guns are everywhere in America; it is part of the American culture. The second amendment ensures the people the right to bear arms. However, not everyone in the country knows how to correctly use firearms. There are shootings still going on throughout the country, but if we come up with more laws to try to keep the guns out of the wrong hands we might live a better life. People already have to get permits for carrying handguns. If we could make more laws so you have to have a permit to carry rifles and shotguns, maybe less mass shootings would happen. The main thing is to stop people from stealing
" There are about 30 million privately-owned firearms in the U.S.-which works out roughly one gun for every man, woman, and child in America, which nearly a third of the population owning at least one gun " ( "Pros and cons of Gun ownership of Home Security", par#1 ). There is a reason mass shooting sprees or someone who died from gun shots, are happening and on the news almost everyday. Some of these guns gets in the hands of the wrong people who carries out these murders. No wonder, gun related crimes went up significantly and it's getting worse day by day. " More than 11,000 people are murdered by guns every year " ( Diamond, par 15
