The opera Rigoletto at the Metropolitan Opera was conducted by Pablo Heras Casado. The three principal singers were Piotr Beczala as the Duke, Zeljko Lucic as Rigoletto and Olga Peretyatko as Gilda. This being my first opera, I was surprised by how large and grandiose the house was, which is in sharp contrast to my typical experience when I see musicals. The production decided to place a modern twist on the setting of the opera, rather than the original setting of 16th century Italy, the story is placed in Las Vegas in the 20th century. The set is constructed to reflect that in the first act with a casino scene complete with neon lights, card tables and roulette. In my opinion, this all seemed to distract the viewer from the story and the change in setting didn’t enhance the production itself. Rather it made me think about how out of place this all was instead of focusing on the opera itself. The first act was fairly difficult for me to suspend disbelief and get into the plot of the opera. This had much to do with me being initially turned off by the casino as the setting for this opera. Although in later acts I was able to move past the modern set that was only because this set became less pronounced in the second and third acts.
Now moving on to the aria’s the three I will be focusing on will be the Aria from the Duke La Donna e Mobile, Bella figlia dell’amore, and Della vendetta alfin giunge l´istante . These scenes effectively move the audience through their repetition
The Original Three Tenors Concert in 1990 was recorded live and originated as a fund raiser for the José Carreras International Leukemia Foundation. This concert was held on July 7th, 1990 at Baths of Caracalla in Rome, Italy. The key performers were José Carreras, who had been diagnosed with Leukemia, Luciano Pavarotti, and Plácido Domingo. The voices of these three Spaniard men along with, Zubin Mehta, who conducted orchestras of Teatro dell'Opera di Roma and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, recorded what author Stephen Eddins writes in his article on the website called “All Music” as, “the Guinness Book of World Records (in 2010) for the best-selling classical album of all time” (Eddins, All Music). This was the beginning of “The Three
This composition consists of three movements of which we will further examine movement II, Adagio Cantabile. This movement is placed in high contrast with the other two, particularly in tempo.
In any musical drama, be it opera, oratorio, or even musical theatre, it is possible for a composer to convey the personality of their characters through compositional and musical techniques. Doing so heightens the audience’s understanding of the characters, their motivations, and the relationships between them. Monteverdi, as a pioneer of opera, was one of the first to capitalize on this opportunity to heighten the audience’s understanding of the characters. This is highly apparent in his last opera, L’Incoronazione di Poppea. The music for two of the characters, Poppea and Nerone, is especially well composed to demonstrate personality, and this is no more apparent than in the dialogue which introduces the audience to them, Signor, deh
The next piece I would chose is Notre Dame School: Gaude Maria Virgo. In this piece, it is sung in a cappella with a rhythmic mode. What caught my attention in this piece is the different voices singing at different pitches. The voices in this song are layered also making it a polyphony until the end when everybody joins together to make it a monophonic texture. When I listen
A tragedy is typically explained as a type of drama that displays pain and suffering, and where the main character, the protagonist, experiences a life changing event that alters his fortune from good too bad. William Shakespeare’s play, Othello, the Moor of Venice is classified as an Aristotelian classical tragedy based on the guidelines Aristotle sets when examining a tragedy. Othello is a general in the Venetian army, and the husband of Desdemona, and well respected by society. The play describes how Othello’s fate has an undesirable change in fortune, the reversal. In brief, Othello is portrayed as a happy, powerful man in the beginning of the play, and by the end of the play he endures pain and suffering from his own misfortune

I think it’s because music brings more depth to any play. There’s something about music that harmonizes with every being as it amplifies feelings or emotions that mere words alone cannot. Music is infectious, be it celebratory or sentimental, it always has that strange way of connecting people together to share the actors’ passion and excitement, such as in Ragtime, when Colehouse and Sarah shared their hopes and dreams for their son’s future in a song called “Wheels of A Dream.”
On stage, singers bring the story to life through acting and singing the words along to the music played by the orchestra much in the same way as a musical. What makes an opera different to a musical is that the singers are unamplified by microphones and the orchestra is much larger and plays entirely live. The main characters are sung by 'principals' who are often guest artists who work freelance and perform with different opera companies. The Chorus includes twenty female and twenty males singers who, depending on the opera, either commentate on the main action or on occasion take the story forward themselves. Members of the Chorus will also take some of the smaller roles in certain operas. The Chorus are what makes an opera special, they
On Friday November 3rd I had the pleasure of attending an evening of Opera titled Love Through the Ages with Maria Fortuna and Nancy Townsend at the Sean O’Sullivan Theatre. Having never been to an Opera performance I had no idea of what to expect and was looking forward to this new experience. Fortuna was accompanied by multi-faceted pianist Nancy Townsend. These two musicians showed tremendous expertise and were able to keep my attention through the extent of the program.
When students study to sing Italian bel canto opera, it’s better to use the work which performed by people who is original singer to imitate and practice. However, there are still a series of problems will happen for non-Italian students when they are study singing the opera, for example Semiramide. Bel raggio lusinghier. Even according to the video soundtrack to imitate, the overall effect artistic and performances is not satisfactory. The problems are pronunciation hesitation, slurred speech, unknown the meaning of the text. All of these problems will reduce the bel canto opera artistry.
The artwork previewed through a two minute fifteen second video that has various scenes from the first opera in Der Ring des Nibelungen, the Ring Cycle, Das Rheingold. The scenes selected have a variety of configurations of the set pieces and have various images and video projected onto the set pieces as they move. These set pieces consist of twenty-four rotating planks constructed from aluminum and covered in fiberglass that connect to two towers at the end and run off of hydrologic system. The projections onto the surface were also advance consisting of the images reacting to the performers body heat and change in the volume of the performers. This structure supported the physically at times with them moving across the plank and at other times the performers were flown around the set using as an interactive art piece. This video was also paired with music from the opera changing with the scenes to showcase the opera score’s relationship with the set piece itself. Another element of the production design in the video was the use of theatrical lighting. The idea of creating silhouettes and other shadows to focus and audience’s attention on certain areas while also given insight to details such as location, time of day, and the particular mood of the piece. The color and intensity provided through both projections and lighting also gives the information mentioned before as well as emphasizing certain elements, most importantly the ring in this case glows bright gold, to
In Puccini’s operatic compositions, atmosphere and local color played a very important role. Each of his operas is set in a different setting and this gave him the challenge to experiment with harmony, rhythm and orchestral color. When Puccini composed Turandot, he almost became a student of Far Eastern ethnography, ceremonies of Japan and China, and he also studied a collection of oriental tunes. All of these activities had a profound impact on Puccini’s compositions. Turandot is one of the longest of Puccini’s works, a grand opera in the truest sense: an enormous, late-Romantic orchestra with large percussion forces and on-stage band to support the story and its setting in China. The Chinese folk-songs Puccini used in Turandot were used these tunes to give authentic sound in his opera. In addition, Puccini set exotic percussions, Gong and Cymbalum, to establish Asian atmosphere and color.
The first objective is to gain generous contributions. The amount per donator, ration between new donators and new contacts (collection rate) and the total amount of the donators and contributions are ways to measure how this aspect is doing. Incentives for the staff should also be incorporated into these objectives, especially ones that steer the process towards multi-year support programs.
Donald Grout defines opera in his text, A Short History of Opera, as “a drama in music: a dramatic action, exhibited on stage with scenery by actors in costume, the words conveyed entirely or for the most part by singing, and the whole sustained and amplified by orchestral music” (4). A literal translation of the word opera is simply work, and although the term opera was not coined until 1634, one of the first known operas was performed in 1597 (Grout 1). Grout explains that there are two types of opera. The first type is when the main emphasis is on the music (Grout 6). Examples of this type of opera can be seen in the works of Lully and Wagner (Grout 7). The second type of opera is characterized by the music and other factors being of
Prague State Opera’s March 12th performance of Verdi’s Rigoletto was one of great power and emotion. Though the opera was sung in Italian and subtitles were only available in Czech, the language barrier did not hinder enjoyment of the performance in any way. Throughout the entire opera, the emotions were portrayed brilliantly and could be felt by the audience. The opera begins with a short prelude that continues as a main theme throughout the entire opera.
