The person that greed affected the most was Kino. He wanted all the treasures of the pearl, and became a vicious and slightly insane man because of it. In the beginning, the pearl gave him happy thoughts, such as him and his wife getting married. He also saw through the pearl: his family affording new and clean clothes, and Coyotito receiving an education. He then started getting greedy and desiring the deepest riches of the pearl. He wanted a rifle, and then went on from there. This quote from page 12 can prove so, “Then to the lovely gray surface of the pearl came the little things Kino wanted: a harpoon to take the place of one lost a year ago, a new harpoon of iron with a ring in the end of the shaft; and - his mind could hardly make the …show more content…
Originally, Kino and Juana had went to the doctor to see if he could treat Coyotito’s scorpion wound. He declines because he is discriminating of Kino’s race and that he does not have enough money. Later, when he learns that Kino has found ‘the pearl of the world,’ he decides to go back to Kino’s village and treat Coyotito. He did so out of greed for the riches of the pearl. He knew when he reached Kino’s brush house that Coyotito was already healed, but out of greed, poisoned him with a ‘medicine’ that he have the infant so that he would gain the riches of the pearl. He also offered to keep the pearl safe with him, and knowing that Kino would probably look at the hiding place of the pearl, he watched greedily. This greed is shown when the doctor is having a conversation with Kino after ‘saving Coyotito’s life’, “The doctor shrugged, and his wet eyes never left Kino's eyes. He knew the pearl would be buried in the house, and he thought Kino might look toward the place where it was buried. "It would be a shame to have it stolen before you could sell it," the doctor said, and he saw Kino's eyes flick involuntarily to the floor near the side post of the brush house.” Whether it was the doctor who assembled the attacks on Kino’s home, we do not
The author develops the characters by showing how they feel, act, and what they say. In the first chapter of the book, Blue Skin of the Sea, Aunty Pearl told Sonny, “And I loved taking care of you.” This quote explains how Aunty Pearl feels about taking care of Sonny. It shows she loves him and cares for him very much. In the second chapter, Aunty Pearl told Keo, “Your daddy is too soft Keo.” This quote shows that Uncle Harley is kindhearted. He might act different with his brother’s, but with Aunty Pearl, he’s a harmless angel. Lastly, in chapter 2, Tutu Max drove up to the house and asked Aunty Pearl, “Hoo-ie Pearl Honey, where you off to?” This shows Tutu Max is willing to ask Aunty Pearl anything, it doesn’t matter who is around because
One of the greediest and meanest characters in the book is the doctor. “‘Have I nothing better to do than cure insect bites for ‘little indians’? I am a doctor, not a veterinary’”(11). In this quote of The Pearl, the doctor makes it clear that Kino will not be treated because of Kino’s race and doesn’t even regard Kino as a human. A lower class in people’s minds are regarded as intellectually lower, and Kino is not different.
In the book The Pearl by John Steinbeck the main character Kino finds a pearl while pearl diving. The pearl could buy Kino and his family the stuff they need, but it also could bring danger. What the author is trying to say is money brings greed then greed brings danger. Such as when kino was beaten up and the people who beat him up burnt his house down in chapter five page 63 “He saw a little glow ahead of him, and then without interval a tall flame leaped up in the dark with a crackling roar, and a tall edifice of fire lighted pathways”(Steineck pg 63).
If Jack had been appointed leader and Ralph made a hunter, the story would have had an entirely different ending. The boys most likely would have not been rescued due to Jack’s ignorance to the rules and obsession with hunting. “‘The rules!’ shouted Ralph. ‘You're breaking the rules!’ ’Who cares!... Bullocks to the rules! We’re strong - we hunt!’” (91). Jack’s non-authoritative and hunting mindset would have caused all the boys inhabiting the island to be merely well fed- but never rescued. In addition, Jack’s hostile personality would have certainly caused Ralph and all the other hunters to be immensely uncivil and violent. “The twins moved towards Jack and began to protest timidly about something. Jack waved them away. ‘Shut up!’” (63).
Greed is like old age it slowly consumes you, nobody can escape it, and it will eventually cause your demise. In House of the Scorpion, by Nancy Farmer, a clone named Matt is isolated from the world because in this time period clones are viewed as pets. He is the clone of El Patrón, the lord of Opium; opium is a county that runs in a narrow line between the USA and Aztlan. (modern-day Mexico) Clones are supposed to be brain dead, but El Patrón wanted to relive his youth through his clone, which allowed Matt to find a way to defeat El Patrón. Throughout this novel, Farmer conveys the message greed is eventually going to lead to demise.
The House of the Scorpion Author’s Craft Essay “He grew large and green until he shadowed over the whole forest, but most of his branches are twisted” (70) This example of dialogue from The House of the Scorpion is a powerful metaphor repeated throughout the book and is an accurate comparison with El Patrón. El Patrón grew more powerful until he controlled a whole pseudo-country, but his twisted branches symbolize his corruption and greed. The House of the Scorpion uses symbolism to develop El Patrón’s greed.
After confronting the scorpion, Kino and Juana encounter the doctor- the ultimate embodiment of evil in The Pearl. When the doctor’s servant explains Coyotito’s scorpion bite to the doctor, he claims “I am a doctor, not a veterinary,” and leaves the family, miserably, at his
Greed abolishes people’s sense of judgment; it motivates them to act in ways uncharacteristic to their normal selves. People do not envision the possible outcomes or consequences of actions motivated by intense and selfish desires. Michael Crichton, the author of Jurassic Park, a science fiction novel, developed a plot in which a large percentage of his characters are blinded by the uncontrollable force of greed. John Hammond, Dr. Henry Wu, Donald Gennaro, and Dennis Nedry put their personal desires for riches, achievement, and fame above their concern for global safety.
On the subject of rage, an attack on Kino in the book was not the only attack. The malicious pearl causes family to go against family. Juana knows that this pearl has brought the family bond down so she decided to grab it and leave the house. For this reason, Kino strikes at his beloved wife."He struck her in the face with his clenched fist and she fell among the boulders, and he kicked her in the side." (59) Kino doesn't care about the harm he is giving to his family, his mind is only focused on that one pearl. Owing to the fact that Kino is a man, Juana does nothing in defense. "She knew there was murder in him, and it was all right; she had accepted it, and she would not resist or even protest." (59) She showed no sign expostulation
An excellent example of greed consuming people are the attackers. They were willing to do whatever was necessary to get the pearl from Kino and become wealthy. “Greedy fingers went through
“Perhaps a rifle.” ” (Pg. 30). This quote from the book shows how even though Kino is a good, honest, generous man, the pearl was making him want things even though he didn't need them. Like the rifle, the rifle was always known to be a white man's tool, so when he had a taste of wealth, he started seeing all of these things that he didn't need and just wanted in the pearls reflection. Greed touched the doctor and Kino the same way, although they are two very different people with very different personalities and different desires, greed touched them both. Greed touches every character, big and small, in the book The Pearl. The theme greed brings out everyone's true character and shows what they will do to make their hopes and dreams come true.
Evil is shown by the doctor many times during the story. At first, he refuses to treat Coyotito because his parents have no money. When the doctor heard of Kino and Juana's fortune in finding "the pearl of the world", the doctor boasts that they were patients of his while thinking of a better life for himself in Paris. This greed and lust cause him to plot ways to gain wealth. Coyotito is healed by the time the doctor comes to Kino's straw
Another example of greed is shown when Juana takes the pearl from Kino to throw back into the sea. Kino realizes what she is doing and goes after her. Just as Juana is about to discard the pearl, Kino grabs her arm and wrenches the pearl from her. He punches her in the face and when she falls on the boulders, he kicks her in the side. The following quote establishes the violence that Kino unleases on his wife in order to protect his precious pearl from harm, due to his greediness of what the pearl will bring to him and his family: “…Rage surged in Kino. He leaped at Juana and wrenched the pearl from her…with clenched fists, struck her in the face…kicked her in the side…Greedy fingers went through his clothes” (58-59).
The previously poor Kino was overcome by the thoughts of greatness that the pearl held when he could see the wealth in the pearl and the happiness it would
Kino a loving father and husband whom had dreams for his family, as shown in steinbeck’s The Pearl. But fate led him to a pearl of exqwizit magnificence. This pearl assured the dreams he wanted for his family, to marry ied to his wife Juana, and for his son Coyotito to get a proper education. But because of Kino’s obsessive attitude over the pearl it doomed his family to a different path, one with fear, death, and corruption. Juana his loving wife whom was spectacle of what Kino was doing and questioned him “Who do you fear?” (35) Kino answered with “Everyone”(36). You may argue that Kino’s actions are being based on greed therefore greed is responsible for the death of Coyotito and the destruction of the family, I invalidate that argument because greed is an emotion. Greed, is an emotion and emotions cannot control you, you have the ability control your emotions. DO NOT READ THE RED “In my target essay, I argued that emotions can be controlled, in the sense that we can shape or influence which emotions we have, when we have them, and how we experience and express these emotions.”
