The Play of the Diary of Anne Frank starts out in the annex in the warehouse in Amsterdam, Holland where Anne Frank and seven others hid out during World War II. It opens with Otto Frank and Miep Gies standing in the annex alone in 1945. Mr. Frank had just come home from the concentration camps, being the one survivor from the annex. After conversing for awhile, Miep hands Mr. Frank Anne’s diary from the days of living in the annex. He starts to read the book, as it slowly flashes back to 1942 when it all began… On an early morning in July of 1942, the Van Daans and Franks meet up for the first time at the annex. All of them are covered in layers of clothing to carry as much to their new home as possible. They are all …show more content…
They have strict rules, but it’s the only way to stay a secret. Towards the beginning of the play, Peter and Anne have a teasing and kind of playful relationship. They don’t totally like each other, but they’re also very different. Anne is closer to her father than anyone else, but she doesn’t really enjoy her mother. Anne and Margot are fairly close, but Anne seems pretty jealous of Margot and her looks. Mrs. and Mr. Van Daan seem kind of rude to her. About two months after moving in, a local Jewish dentist friend of Miep’s fiance, Dirk, is in trouble. He needs a hiding place, and fast. Mr. Kraler comes to ask if he could hide with them in the annex. After talking it over, they decide it’s the right thing to do. His name is Mr. Dussel. They arrange for him to room with Anne and for Margot to move in with in their parents’ room. Mr. Dussel brings them information from the outside. He tells them about how Jews are being pulled away from their homes and taken off to camps. Mr. Dussel becomes a normal residence of the annex very soon. With time he becomes more and more rude to them, and insensitive. Several months more pass, and soon Anne begins to have terrible nightmares. She wakes Mr. Dussel very often. She dreams that the Nazis come to take them. In the works of the nightmares, she hurts her mother’s feelings by rejecting her comfort. Anne will only talk to her father about it. It truly
The first part of the diary starts with her being a regular girl having fun and turns into a girl going into hiding with seven other people. In addition, she has to deal with relation problems with her mom, sister, and the people she is in hiding with. The problems begin when eight people are confined in a small area and everybody begins to irritate and annoy one another. Anne was especially concerned with herself and with her attitude towards the others in the group. She's mainly concerned with her mother who always treats her like baby. Mr. Frank tires to ease the quarrels between them by telling Anne to help out more around the house, but Anne stubbornly declines preferring to concentrate more on her studies. She especially gets plenty of confrontations with Mrs. Van Daan who thinks she is a spoiled little girl. Mrs. Van Daan constantly tells Anne’s father, “ If Anne were my daughter.” Anne’s respond to this in her diary was, “Thank heavens I’m not!” Of course
The play version of The Diary of Anne Frank tells the story of a young girl who is hiding away with her family from the Nazis during World War II. In this play, Anne struggles with the changes of life and finding who she wants to be while trapped in the annex with multiple other people. While the play of Anne’s diary is still read and viewed today, there is a newer version of her diary; a movie. The movie has slightly changed the events of the play to share Anne’s story with a modern audience. In the movie, the audience see Anne change from a regular life in Amsterdam to a completely new life in the secret annex. Although the play and the movie versions of Anne Frank’s life differ in their organizational structure, both works contain the same
There are many things that are the same, but one main similarity that occurred was that Anne and Peter both fell in love with each other towards the end. The thing that did not happened in the play though, was that Peter and Anne both kissed.
In the play “Anne Frank” they are located in Amsterdam July 6th 1942. They are in hiding in what is called the Annex during WWII. The people at the Annex are Anne Frank, Margot Frank, Mr.Frank and Mrs. Frank, Peter Van Daan, Mr. Van Daan, Mrs. Van Daan, and Mr Dussel, we know this because Mr. Frank gave Anne Frank a diary and she wrote in the diary a lot giving us this information. In times like this, you would need lots of Courage, Compassion, and Sacrifice to get through the tough times.
Throughout stories a lesson of some kind is taught and characters develop and grow. Diary of Anne Frank takes place during the Holocaust in Amsterdam. Since Anne and her family are Jewish they are hiding from the Nazis along with another family. Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett wrote the play based off of the diary that Anne kept while they were in hiding. While they are hiding Anne grows and changes. Anne Frank changes throughout the play because she matures and thinks about the world differently.
Hitler had now invaded Amsterdam, and was going after all the jews. Otto and Edith had a plan if things were going to get bad, they knew where they were going to stay, who was going to live with them and, who was going to help them. They were going to stay in the secret annex, it was a tight, teeny tiny addict that was above Mr.Frank work, and that could do till the war was over. It was a family of three, who was staying with them, Herman Van Pels, his wife Auguste Van Daan, and their son Peter Van Daan who was Margot age. The Franks and Van Daan knew they couldn’t survive on their own they needed help “For the umpteenth time, Mrs. van Daan is sulking. She’s very moody and has been removing more and more of her belongings and locking them up. It’s too bad Mother doesn’t repay every van Daan "disappearing act" with a Frank "disappearing act” (Frank 30). Mr. Frank secretary Miep Gies was a Dutch Woman who helped the Franks, Van Daan, and who then also helped Fritz Pfeffer that was a dentists to come hide with the others. Miep brought everyone food, drinks, basically whatever they
In the play, the entire story of Anne’s life in hiding is a flashback of her father’s when he goes back to the annex and finds Anne’s diary. However, in the movie, the whole story is about what was currently happening and no flashback takes place. For example, the movie is not part of Mr. Franks memory, it is everything that Anne was experiencing at that very moment. Also, in the movie, Anne receives her diary on her birthday as a gift, before they go into the annex.
The Frank’s made a bad decision in letting the Van Daan’s live in the secret annex with them because of conflicts, noise trouble and space issues. One reason that the Franks made a bad decision is because of conflicts between characters. For example, in the play Mr. Van Daan says to Anne, “This isn’t a quarrel! It’s a discussion. And I never heard children so rude before (386).” The quote shows how Anne and Mr. Van Daan were arguing and creating conflict, which tells how letting the Van Daans stay with the Franks wasn’t a smart idea. Similarly, another example of how the Franks made a bad decision is because of space issues. In the play, Anne states to Mrs. Frank, “I’ll come in here with you and Mother, and Margot can take Peter’s room and Peter can go in the room with Mr. Dussel (390).” The text displays how there is not adequate space for both families to live plus Mr. Dussel, which proves that allowing the Van Daan’s to live with them was a bad decision made by the Franks. On the other hand, some people may think that it was a good idea for the Van Daans to live with the Franks. An example is, “Anne. Peter, where are you going?
Before the beginning of World War II, hundreds of Jews were being taken from their homes by Nazis and sent to concentration camps. Fortunately, many were able to escape and get to safety. However, Jews had to stay in hiding to no be arrested. In the dramatization “The Diary of Anne Frank” by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, the Franks, Van Daans, and Dussel escaped from the Nazis. They hid in a secret Annex above Mr. Frank’s store.
Dislikes Mr.Dussel the most because he is old and she does not like Peter, she thinks Peter is weird and shy. Anne acts like she is innocent when she takes Peter’s shoes from underneath their table. Anne had to write a story because she talked too much in school. After Anne Frank had became mature; she thinks more about life and
Can you imagine living in a tiny, cramped attic for over two years? That is exactly what Anne Frank and her family had to do during the Holocaust. This small attic, called the secret Annex, housed the Frank family, the Van Daan family, and a man named Mr. Dussel. These eight Jewish people used the Annex as a hiding place from the arbitrary Nazis that were attempting to send them to Jewish concentration camps. Forcibly, they relied on friends named Miep and Mr. Kraler, who had great magnanimity, to bring supplies, were deprived of many comfortable living conditions, and were always in danger of being caught. All in all, you can infer how torturous those two years of living in the secret Annex were for Anne Frank and her loved ones.
Therefore it is impossible for me to come and see it.”(A Play and On Film) . The play was then first premiered in the Cort Theater in New York. It was a very big success. The performance won the Pulitzer award for Theater, the Tony award and the New York Critic’s Circle award for Best Play. It was as well staged in many other countries. The premiere in the Netherlands was on the 27th of November 1956. Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard took place at the premiere. The Anne Frank Museum says, “The play is such a moving experience there, that when the curtain falls there is a long drawn out silence.” As you can tell, the play based on the book by Anne Frank was such a big success. Dussel by letting them stay in the Secret Annex with them. The residents of the Annex received help from Miep Gies and Mr. Kraler, workers in Mr. Frank’s company. Miep bought supplies for them and made sure that they stay hidden. She had to buy certain items they needed from the black market, which was a big risk. In Act 1, Scene 2, Mr. Kraler says, “ Miep or I, or both of us, will be up each day to bring you food and news and find out what your needs are.” This assurance showed how devoted Miep and Mr. Kraler were to keep the Franks comfortable in the attic, even when the risks were extremely dangerous. An excerpt from Anne’s diary about Miep and Kraler’s involvement was stated in part of the play. “I asked Father what would happen to them if the Nazis found out they were hiding us. Pim said that they would suffer the same fate that we would” (The Diary of Anne Frank 1.2.768-772). The punishment for hiding Jews was death. After the Franks were sent to Auschwitz, Miep narrowly avoided the death penalty by luck. The police officer who came to interrogate her was from her own hometown, so he let her stay. Jeannine Burk was a Jew who hid in a woman’s house from the ages of three to five. She noted that it was constantly dangerous for her, even in hiding. She stated, “The Nazis used to love to parade. When
The Diary of Anne Frank starts as a young teen in her birthday. She has just turned thirteen. In the beginning, of her diary, she mentions a typical young teen girl life, and every problem that they face at a young age; liking boys, grades, and friendships. Because of the laws that were forced at the time, Jews had to go to seperate schools that everyone else. Anne and her sister had to move to different schools in Amsterdam. She moves to the Netherlands with her family to flee the discrimination in Germany (Holocaust Encyclopedia, n.d.). When Germans came to seize the Netherlands, is when her family hid (Holocaust Encyclopedia, n.d.).
In “The Diary of Anne Frank,” Anne and her family had to go into hiding during World War II and they struggled to survive. While they were in the Secret Annex, everyone’s emotions were affected because of the outside events that happened such as going into hiding, a thief, and the invasion. Mrs Van Daan, Mr. Van Daan, Peter, and Dussel joined them in the Secret Annex where they stayed in hiding in order to stay alive. It was a very small room, but they made connections and all got along together. Everyone got annoyed of each other, but one way or another, they survived and lived happily until they were caught by the Green Police.
