The Portrayal of Nature in To a Skylark and To Autumn

‘To a Skylark’ and ‘To Autumn’ are two poems written by different Romantic poets. Although both are typical of the Romantic period, they differ in many ways. They both have different styles. Both poets elaborate on two different aspects of nature. ‘To a Skylark’, is written by Percy Bysshe Shelley. It compares the Skylark to many different things and it describes how the Skylark manages to exceed all of these things. The poem highlights all of the bird’s qualities. ‘To Autumn’ presents the season as a much warmer autumn than we would usually imagine it. The poem is written by John Keats. It shows how autumn is full of fruitfulness and ripeness …show more content…

This shows how wonderful and great it is. It is also compared to a rose “like a rose embowered”. The way in which the warm wind blows on the petals, just like the way the wind blows on the bird high in the sky. Also how the rose is obscured by the leaves growing around it, the skylark is also obscured from humans because it flies so high in the sky, but just like the rose, its scent still reaches people as beautiful as ever, and very dominant like its melody. It compares the Skylark’s melody to many different things; one is to a Choir “Chorus hymeneal”and their beautiful sound. But it says that when they are compared to the Skylarks melody, “Matched with thine would be all but an empty vault.” This means that when the choir is compared to the skylark there is no contest. These all contribute to show just how great and wonderful the skylark really is – exactly what Shelley wants us to think. It is so great that the poet himself wants to learn what the skylark knows about happiness “Teach me half the gladness” then “such harmonious madness from my lips would flow,” as he would then be able to get everyone to listen to
