The power of Sigmund Freud’s theory Sigmund Freud was a great philosopher who predicted and came up with theories that are widely used in todays society. He is often referred to the father of psychoanalysis as he was one of the first people to analyze the human mind. He separated the human mind into three parts which help further explain the theory of psychoanalysis. The first part is known as the id, it is the part of the mind that deals with instincts. It is the unconscious part of the mind that looks to seek pleasure. The second part is known as the ego, and it deals with reality. It is what balances the mind’s idea of the difference between pain and pleasure. The third part is known as the superego, and it deals with someone’s sense of morals and morality. This theory was so revolutionary that it is still used in many novels in today’s day and age. An example of a novel that uses Sigmund Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis is Perks of being a Wallflower, written by Stephen Chbosky. The protagonist of the novel, Charlie, mind is analyzed using this theory and is described using three key antagonist characters. The first character is Patrick, and can be described through the id section of Charlie’s mind, as he is seen as very reckless throughout the story. The next character is Sam, and can be described using the ego part of Charlie’s mind, as she is seen a very responsible and mature character in the novel.
