Tycoons of the Progressive Era did not have the safety and protection in mind of the workers who labored to make their garments. The workers were looked down on and had numerous rules and regulations that were unnecessary to the job, and none that were necessary. In 1911, a fire at the Triangle Waist Company broke out that claimed the lives of many women working on the upper floors of the Asch building. Because of this incident, the conditions that these immigrant women and children worked in were exposed, which in turn led to various reform groups coming together to fight for safer conditions in the workplace. Every morning the boss would give the girls their work load for the day. He would throw them in troughs that were dug into the tables. Paper patterns were strewn messily along the walls. If there was a mess up on a pattern or it is damaged, then the cloth is discarded. Piles similar to those would be spread out along the floor. They were a tripping hazard and a fire hazard, as the material is flammable. The workers were also fined for the damaged piece and sometimes, the entire yard of fabric. The work hours were long, generally from seven in the morning until six at night. Usually people would come in to work on the weekends also. If people stayed past dark, they had to use gaslight to light the rooms. This was also considered another fire hazard. Since there were no work regulations during this time period, there were no standards for safety or how one had to behave towards others. Accidents in these shops were extremely common. The women wanted to get as much done as they possibly could because they were paid by the piece, and in their rush, their fingers would get caught in the machines. Sadie Frowne talks about the time when she was injured, “Sometimes in my haste I get my finger caught and the needle goes right through it. It goes so quick, tho, that it does not hurt much.” Small children were also working in these unsanitary sweatshops. They were especially needed if a machine stopped working and an adult was unable to reach the broken part;
