Abortion is one of the most controversial topics today. Many people have different ideas or beliefs on whether abortion is right or wrong. There are two different views on abortion, pro-life and pro-choice. Pro-life views abortion as murder, wrong, and immoral. Pro-life viewers believe that women who have an abortion are killing a human life. Pro-choice viewers believe that women are not obligated to carry a baby they do not want or are prepared for to term. However, I believe abortion is only acceptable in the case of rape, but not in the case of failed contraception. In Judith Jarvis Thomson’s article, “Defense of Abortion,” she mentions an example of a violinist. In this example, she explains that you are unaware of your surroundings because someone has abducted you. They have plugged you into a machine that helps out this “famous violinist,” who has poison in his circulatory system. When you are conscious, the doctors tell you, you cannot unplug because you will kill him. In this scenario, you have an option of killing him or staying attached to him until he is healthy. If you stay plugged into him, time passes by, but nothing will happen to your body, you will stay completely healthy. Regardless if the doctor gave you a choice or not, all persons have a right to life, so disconnecting from his body is not giving him the right to live. Therefore, you do not have a choice but to stay attached to his body for an uncertain amount of time. Thomson is writing in a pro-life
There are two main political parties you can choose from in the United States, The Democrats and the Republicans. There are also third parties you can choose from. People can choose to be part of any party. We are divided by the left and right side on the political spectrum. The right are more conservative and the left are more liberal. These two political parties show philosophical differences through their viewpoints on major topics. With so many differences between the parties, finding topics or issues upon which constituents agree on can be difficult.
“How can the “Dream” survive if we murder children? Every aborted baby is like a slave in the womb of his or her mother. The mother decides his or her fate” (Martin Luther King, Jr). This quote, by Martin Luther King Jr, represents how Martin Luther King Jr really feels about abortions, and how abortions relate back to the idea of slavery. As abortions are spreading all across the world many people have wondered if there are any positives to abortions? If there are not any positives to abortion then people may wonder, what are the negatives to abortions, and how do other people feel about abortions.
A hotly debated topic in our time is whether abortion should be allowed. Moral arguments have battled back and forth for years, each argument refuting the next. Finally, Don Marquis, a professor in philosophy at the University of Kansas, makes his argument against abortion. Does Marquis play the trump card? Is this the end all argument? Let us explore his argument.
Abortion is a very controversial topic in today’s society. Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks (Abortion). Many people have issues regarding this topic, while some support the idea. This paper will be covering the pros and cons, people’s attitudes, and how a researcher could possible change your perspective on the topic at hand.
Of course when making any decision it is important to critically think out the whole situation. It is very important to not make irrational decisions. In order to help make the best decision the pros and cons should be taken into consideration. The pros of having an abortion could be but not limited to, being unable to financially afford a child. There may be health risk for the woman so an abortion may save a life. The pregnancy may have been a result of violent crime or assault. “The 'Hyde Amendment' refers to an amendment first offered by Rep. Henry J. Hyde in 1976 to the Departments of Labor and Health, Education, and Welfare, Appropriation Act, 1977. The amendment restricted the use of appropriated funds to pay
Have you ever wondered why abortion is such a debated topic. How some politicians use it as a political ploy and others are completely against abortion? Also, if the supreme court says abortion is legal, why have many states added so many restrictions and rules to it. If abortion is legal, why does the government try so hard to make women feel like it isn’t. When did it become ok for the government tell women what and what not to do with our bodies and made our decisions for us? These new abortion restrictions makes it even harder for women to have an abortions, then it already is.
Abortion is a rather sensitive topic that carries various and strong personal opinions. The first question is what is an abortion? Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by removing or expelling the fetus or embryo from the uterus before it is ready for birth. It has become one of the most controversial arguments in the world having to decide between pro-choice or pro-life. Religious conservatives side with the opinion that being pro-choice is a crime and a sin. Juxtaposed to the right to life opinion is the pro-choice advocates. The pro-choice argues that a women should have the right to decide what she personally does with her body. During debates, both sides often present valid arguments towards support or rejection of their
Abortion is one of the most controversial topics and many argue that it's wrong, but I disagree, I am a strong supporter of abortions. An abortion is when a woman deliberately terminates a pregnancy, there are many medical methods used to perform an abortion. The techniques used for abortion have changed drastically over time and many cultures developed their own forms of abortions. Originally abortions were unregulated and many women performed abortions on themselves at home, which were very unsafe and many at home abortions resulted in injury or death. The two main methods of abortion as of right now are surgical and medical abortion, these are much safer than previous methods and rarely inflict any harm onto the woman. The surgical method is performed using a vacuum like device to empty the uterus of its content. The medical abortion can only be used early in a pregnancy and requires a woman to take a prescribed pill for the first seven weeks of her pregnancy.
Judith Jarvis Thomson, on the other hand, introduces an exception, the “violinist” analogy, to argue that abortion could be permissible under certain circumstances. The violinist analogy basically tells the story of a person that was kidnapped and is unconsciously plugged to a violinist’s body for 9 months because medical records showed the person had the right blood type to heal the violinist’s kidney ailment by the Society of Music Lovers. The person
As mentioned in the previous paragraph, the procedures used to perform late term abortions are both safe and humane. It should be noted that there are mainly two procedures used, D&E(dilation and evacuation) and D&X (dilation and extraction). To understand why there is much debate about the humaneness of these two procedures, especially the D&X procedure, one has to comprehend what these procedures entail. “D&E is a procedure that may require, if the pregnancy is sufficiently advanced, the use of a forceps to dismember the fetus and extract it in pieces,”(Ballaro). Interestingly enough, this procedure which would seem like the one to cause an uproar is more accepted by the prolife movement than that of the D&X procedure. ”The D&X procedure is when the fetus is removed intact from the womb. It takes two to three days while
Abortion is protected by the Fourteenth Amendment, informed by the First, Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Ninth Amendments. Supreme Court views abortion as a “privacy right” and a “liberty claim”. In the 1973 landmark case Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court applied this constitutional principle of privacy and liberty to a woman's ability to terminate pregnancy. Basically everyone should get to have certain rights such as privacy to have an abortion without anyone finding out. The pros of having a “Privacy abortion” is nobody needs to know your story unless you tell them. Reproductive choice empowers women by giving them control over their own bodies giving them right or wrong. Women who receive abortions are less likely to suffer mental health problems
The abortion of a human infant has been so controversial that the prohibition of its process had slowly begun to lose its course. While abortion may be highly controversial in reference to the morality and free will of the human individual, the background and results of such actions are the main ingredients for political, moral, and social chaos in the protest of the free will to make such decisions to take an infant’s short life. This ethical dilemma is one of major political issues that modern-day politicians are having more difficult times attempting to put certain regulations for. This is resulting in the political and judicial debate on whether or not a person has the constitutional right to terminate another person’s life. If I were a politician or Supreme Court Justice, I would have to take
A debate that has been analyzed and discussed for many centuries, and still is today; is whether abortions, should be allowed to continue or prohibited. Although with that broad topic in mind, it brings up many other subtopics. One that is most considered is whether a fetus’ right to life is absolute. In today's society, people have different opinions on this topic, some believe that from the moment of conception, that a fetus is a human being, while others believe that regardless of how long the fetus has been in the womb, it not a human until it has experienced the world, developed morality, emotions, able to think for itself. In this paper I will argue that the fetus does not have a right to life, until it is born. Judith Jarvis Thompson speaks about in “A Defense to Abortions” that the life of a fetus is dependent on a woman’s body. Since her body is her own, then it is the right of the woman to give a right to life.
Whether or not an abortion should be legal has been argued for years. It has become political and even personal at times. People discuss morality and parent rights, but do they ever truly consider the rights of the unborn? Everybody has his opinion on abortions. Some people think they are wrong and some people don’t find anything wrong with them. Abortion is wrong and should be banned.
Most people like to say that they are the product of their environment. I observe different individuals that are facing life in prison or who have dropped out of school to pursue a life a crime. The part about this situation that baffles me is how 80% of these people will bring up how rough their childhood was. The plethora of children who grow up without guidance is something that is more common than children growing up with guidance. The environment in which the child is in can have a colossal impact on his or her well-being. The parents could be living with their parents who are not supportive of the pregnancy. If the parents are dependents and they are forced to choose between their child and having a place to stay, many people would choose a place to stay. The stress of not knowing where to go while expecting a child is too much for parents to bear. The option of abortion is a calculated decision that takes 10 minutes and is the safest procedure that a person can get. According to the Planned Parenthood organization, "Overall, three 3 in 10 women in the U.S. will have an abortion by the time they're 45 years old." With the procedure being safe, parents might opt for an abortion so that they can get their lives together to be able to have what the child might need. Many women don’t even know that they are pregnant. “Cryptic Pregnancy” is the term that is associated with cases where a woman doesn’t know that she is pregnant until she is around five months along. According
