College in 2017 is described to most as a rite of passage. We go through 12 years of basic education to be able to get accepted into a 2 or 4 year college. Once arriving there, professors usually have two different ways of talking to students. These would be described as the theories to why we have college. While some students and even professors believe that college is all about expanding your mind, the alternative perception of higher education is a preferred way to look at and experience college. Many people think higher education is just about grades. College is more than just studying in a book for a calculus test and that pesky chemistry exam. College is focused on immersing one’s self in different experiences. That is what theory two is all about. These two theories come from a college professor named Louis Menand. He describes the purpose of college as learning from mistakes and becoming more worldly. In that article he describes three theories for how college is perceived. The first theory would be learning basic education, getting perfect grades and receiving their diploma. The second theory, on the other hand, is much more beneficial for the student. Mistakes make us who we are and they are exceptional learning experiences. If someone receives a D- on a algebra test, instead of feeling low self confidence, they would look at the mistakes they made and learn from them for the next test.
