Why College Is Not For College

Many people believe that in order to be successful is to go to college. Also many people believe that college is a waste of money. Since we started middle school teachers made us believe in order to be successful is to have a higher education. That’s not true That’s not true many people have been successful in their jobs without even going to college. College education may be beneficial in the future, but not going to college could also benefit you.

We are told to “go to college” by family, media, and teachers, but we are never given an explanation on why it’s important for us to get a higher education. The importance of higher education is so we can obtain a career that can support our needs and wants. It’s also important because it gives you an advantage when trying to get a job. Employers require a higher form of education, which is necessary for our society to advance. There aren’t many jobs that accept people with a high school diploma as their highest form of education. Employers want people that know what they’re doing, and so does our society. In order for people to go into the career field they want, they need to go to college to learn everything that comes with that career.

In the article “We send to many students to college,” Marty Nemko discusses how college may not be the answer for everyone, and how a person can be successful without college. Nemko argues that it is most likely that a person that is at the bottom half of their graduating class in high school is not going to earn a diploma while in college. Nemko also says that a person that has been to college could end up working a job that a non-college graduate would be working because of the degree that a person has is useless. Many may think that a person that has a college degree is better off, but a person that didn’t graduate may work harder, and be more motivated in life to accomplish the goals they have set for themselves. College is not for everyone, nor is it required for a lot of jobs today. A reason that people do not necessarily have to go to college is because most jobs today don’t require going to college. Last year, “according to the federal reserve bank of new york, 46 percent of recent college graduates were in jobs that don’t even require a college degree.” This is saying that majority of those that went to college wasted their time and money for something that was not needed. The more people waste their time, the longer it will take to be successful. This is one example that supports why college is not necessary.

The articles suggest that people who do not attend college miss opportunities to learn the skills valued by employers, and therefore have lower chances of being hired. In addition, they lack the knowledge needed to create their own successful businesses. Throughout a student’s journey of schooling, college is mentioned hundreds of times. Maybe even thousands. Once they reach high school the next four years are dedicated to preparing for college. Some will feel overwhelmed by this thought and others may not. While a lot of people have the option to go, many decide not to. In Charles Murray’s article, Are Too Many People Going to College he discusses a few reasons why people might not choose college. Although in my own opinion it is not always necessary to attend college, I do believe it will benefit many people. Freeman Hrabowski’s article Colleges Prepare People for Life makes a point about benefits of college which I agree with.

Everybody knows that after high school you attend college, right? College is expected from society that has been placed for decades; it’s what you do is what society expects with these expectations comes pressure. Pressure from peers, choosing the right college, group mind, and deciding whether or not if you would like to attend college. College is not for everyone, so when a student is pressured to attend college, they often drop out before the first semester ends. The pressure doesn’t end with the initial decision, it continues with course selection or declaring you’re major. So they attend college to find themselves, and to see what they’re interested in. In the 21st century, the pressure to attend college causes students to fall under the pressure and attend college even when it not the best fit for the student.

Many students do not go to college because of the steep cost to attend. There a lot of students and families that support this claim, with some experts adding that other socio-economic factors also contribute to this issue. Additionally, there are many that think that not everyone needs to go to college. Either way, some students still struggle to pay for their college education. Early exposure to college provides a practical solution to this problem. While ninth grade is typically viewed as a good time to start thinking about college, it would be more beneficial to students if they started before then in middle school. Students would receive information about financial aid and admissions. They would be able to plan which classes to take and activities to join in high school in order to obtain scholarships and admission. Completing these actions will increase their chances of enrolling in college. Although some people argue that college is not necessary for every student, it is still helpful for students to have a plan after high school. Introducing students to college in middle school will improve college access.

Going to college and obtaining a college degree would provide one with endless possibilities and opportunities in their life. While attending college students have the chance to meet many new people. This provides students to get out of their shells and explore new ideas. Having a college degree also widens ones options for a career and gives the opportunity to make a better salary. Many jobs today are requiring employees to have some type of college degree. Employers also pay an extra amount if one does obtain a college degree, and having a college degree often provides for greater promotion opportunity.

College is an extremely expensive luxury that is out of reach for some people. Universities also may not offer what some are looking for in life. For example, Rachel Ray would have never been able to learn how to cook from a desk. Getting a college degree is very time consuming; a bachelor’s degree, at least, takes four years to complete. The grades someone earns in college does not ensure what someone’s skills are. Someone with high grades may not be skilled, but someone with low grades may know exactly what they are doing. A college education is definitely not for everyone because colleges do not offer what a lot of people actually need.

In the world we live in, young adults are pressured into going to college. They are told that going to college will have them making more money than a person who didn’t attend college. The people who tell us that are correct. Attending college, and putting forth the effort to acquire a four year degree will allow a person to be more successful than someone who went to school for a two year degree or less.
