The Pros And Cons Of The Crusades

The Crusades were a religious war that was fought over the Christian control of Holy Lands. Pope Urban II initiated the war in the 11th century to try and take back control over the Holy Lands from the Muslims. There are eight official crusades that did not achieve their goal of gaining control. The Crusades lasted for nearly two centuries, and the effects can still be seen to this day. The Crusade began after Pope Urban II gave a speech to the community asking them to help. When Pope Urban II gave his speech he wanted to aid the Byzantines with recapturing the Holy Lands, reduce warfare in Europe, and strengthen the church; however, the situation transformed into the robbing and killing of the innocent, the pillaging of the Byzantine

Many disagree whether the Crusades could be called a Christian holy war. This same disagreement happens between Jonathan Phillips and Arthur Jones. Jonathan Phillips believes that the Crusades can not be considered a holy war. On the other hand, Arthur Jones believes they can. Each author has their own objectives for writing and uses evidence to support each side of the argument.

The Crusades were great military missions developed by Christian nations of Europe for the purpose of rescuing the Holy Land of Jerusalem from the hands of the Moslems. Jerusalem was extremely important to the Moslems and Christians at this time. Many religious events happened there, and many landmarks of both religions were located in Jerusalem. There were many Crusades some more significant than others, but in general the Crusades were very important to the spread of Christianity and religious based knowledge. The Crusades are an example of religious rebellion that is timeless and universal throughout the world.

The Crusaders, people who had fought in the Crusades, were Christians. They wanted the holy land because they believe that’s where Jesus had died and rose. Some may wonder, were the results of the Crusades more Positive or Negative? I strongly believe the outcome was mostly negative mainly because the Crusaders didn’t win the holy land, lots of lands were destroyed, and so many people lost their lives in the battle of the Crusades.

They also had 9 Crusades, or 9 times when they would attack to get the Holy Land, against the Muslims and Jews, but mostly against the Muslims. During those battles there were both positive and negative. Were the results of the Crusades more positive or negative? The Crusades were more negative than positive because they worsen their relationship with the Jews and Muslims, or religious hatred, they destroyed and betrayed their closest ally, and their towns or cities were difficult to handle.

The Crusades were more negative rather beneficial because of the religious hatred that they left behind and that they turned onto jews. Document one states,”...massacring entire communities,” meaning many people died because of the bitter legacy of the hatred of the religious.This is important because religious hatred is a legacy that was left by the crusades when they also failed in their chief

During this time religion permeated every aspect of life. The Christian kings and peasants believed that every human being was judged in death and one way to absolve oneself of sin was to die in the name of the Lord, therefore dying in the Crusades would purify the soul allowing them to go straight to heaven. Consequently, “thousands of laymen and clergy took up the cross and younger sons of the upper-class had military advantages to become Crusaders” (Fiero, 2017). At this particular time, the church acknowledged and vindicated fighting and killing in the name of God, resulting in the Crusaders slaughtering all enemies of Christ; hundreds of men, women, and children plus the “entire Jewish populations of Cologne and Mainz became victims” (Fiero, 2017). The First Crusade set a dangerous precedent, the rise of organized anti-Jewish persecution and each subsequent Crusade resulted in renewed attacks on the Jews. The persecution of Jews reached a climax during the Crusades.

The Crusades was a conflict between the two most popular Religions, the Muslims and Christians. There was a total of nine wars and begun during the 11th and ended in the 13th century. A question asked after centuries the Crusades have occurred is were the results a beneficial or a negative one.The aftermath of the Crusades is an obvious negative point in history. The Crusades gave many reasons on why it was failure than a success as many were killed for terrible reasons and created a bigger division and intolerance for each other's beliefs.

Adding on wars are not a good thing, that's why I think the Crusades were negative.

There are many reasons for the crusades to be positive and negative. But the reasons of what the crusades effect was more negative than positive. This is because in the text it states “The crusades failed in their chief goal: the conquest of the holy land. They also left a bitter legacy of religious hatred behind them.” What this means is be the crusades left a negative effect of bitterness and hatred. Another reason in the text for why the crusades were negative is “In Europe, crusaders sometimes turned their fury against Jews, massacring entire communities.” This sentence means that people who took part in the crusades made careless decisions.

How can something so horrible turn out so well? The Crusades. The Crusades were military expeditions undertaken by European Christians in the eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth centuries to recover control of the Holy Land from the Muslims. They were devastating for many Christians, or Jews. The Turks, or Muslims, and the Jews fought for many years over Jerusalem, resulting in many deaths. In the end, the Jews prevailed, turning it into the Holy place it is today. During the Middle Ages, Christian Jews tried to recapture Jerusalem, which had been previously taken by Muslim Turks.

The crusades was a 200 year war of bloodshed and violence. It was a series of wars between the Muslims and the Christians for the Holy Land. The Christians wanted to convert Muslims to Christianity. It was debated whether Christians did the crusades to gain power or solely to convert Muslims.

In the eleventh and twelfth century the christians and the muslims all started to fight. So the question is were the crusades more positive or negative. I think that the crusades were more negative. The reasons why i think they are negative because the crusades just wanted to fight , the pope told them lies.
