Most students do not need instructions to figure out how to play video games. It just comes naturally to young individuals. Kalman Heller from Psych Central says “Currently the United States school system is at an all-time low.” The United States has a 30% rate of students failing to graduate high school, and in urban settings, 50-70% (Heller Psych Central). Compared to the rest of the world, these are relatively high numbers. The reason behind the mass dropouts is motivation. Students are no longer motivated to learn and therefore leave because they no longer want to strive for something they don’t find to be for them. The high dropout rates directly affect the American economy. The dropouts cost America billions of dollars in lost productivity and high crime rates. The implementation of video games in schools and teacher lessons may save the system. Games tend to carry the stigma of being unintelligent and lazy, but this is not the case. Most of the time it is the complete opposite. Games are the best source of learning, they can teach what most teachers can't. It gives students the opportunity to learn hands-on, just like a science experiment. By implementing video games into standardized core curriculum classes, it can help reduce the amount of uneducated young adults. Many students are not motivated because they find school to be boring and full of busy work. If students were able to learn through gaming, many students who are at risk of dropping out, will stay.
