The purpose of Joyce Travelbee’s Human to Human Relationship Model focuses on the interpersonal rapport between the nurse and the patient. According to Petiprin (2016), The purpose of nursing is fulfilled as the interpersonal relationship with the patient progresses through five phases and begins with the initial encounter. The five stages include initial meeting, the emergence of personal identities, empathy, sympathy and the establishment of mutual rapport (Petiprin, 2016). Travelbee believes that a positive rapport and interpersonal relationship with the patient is a requisite for successful patient care. There are seven main concepts of the nursing theory. According to Petiprin (2016), “these include suffering, meaning, nursing, hope, communications, self-therapy, and a targeted intellectual approach.” These concepts help the nurse to develop an understanding of the nursing model.
The Human to Human Relationship Model of Nursing has seven basic concepts. According to Petiprin (2016), They are:
• Suffering, which is the patient’s physical and mental experiences that area measured in intensity and duration (Petiprin,2016).
• Meaning is the significance of the individual (Petiprin, 2016).
• Nursing helps people explore the meaning of their experiences of illness or suffering. The nurse examines their own spiritual, ethical and perceptions of the illness and suffering to help others find meaning in the experience (Petiprin,2016).
