Symbolism is a quintessential element in all writing, whether it is prose or a poem. “The Red Convertible,” a short story written by Louise Erdrich, tells the story of the destructive nature of war, via the strain caused on the families from improper deconditioning. The main characters in the story, Lyman and Henry Lamartine, are brothers that develop a seemingly inseparable bond through a car; a red convertible. Lyman, the younger of the two was very hard-working and could always “make money” (Erdrich 394). He manages to ascend up the employment ladder at Joliet Café from “washing dishes” (Erdrich 394) to eventually owning the establishment. Henry was soon drafted into the war and became a Marine. Upon returning from the Vietnam War

You came into my life so many years ago. A friend and a confidante, being there to share my happiness and my sorrow. A pony that stood 13 and half hands high, a character that made me smile. Your hair shone so bright, white in colour with dapples dazzling to the human eye. Your mane and tail matched the brilliance of your coat, white as snow and soft to touch beneath my hand. Memories of rubbing my face against your neck, inhaling the aroma of your skin, enticing you to bend your head towards me, blowing softly through your nostrils, inviting me to stay and caress you with gentle flowing strokes across your body.
Ever since I was a child I knew that I wanted to work with animals. Horses, in particular, have always fascinated me. After much begging, pleading, years of convincing, and always working hard to save up money, I convinced my parents to allow me to buy a horse. To me, Indie was the most beautiful quarter horse I could have ever dreamed of getting. Since our purchase of Indie, we have acquired another horse, Sherman, and a pony, Tucker. Although the horses have always been hard work, they were worth every sweaty hot summer evening of mucking out the stalls and frigid winter mornings of carrying water to the trough in order to avoid freezing our hoses. After all, I used to dream of being a veterinarian and helping all kinds of animals in some way.

If you were a girl like me I think you would have seventeen gentlemen callers.
