Ethics is the way of living your life with conscience, understanding and having the courage to take the right and just decision irrespective of the repercussion. In every stage of life starting with childhood to old age, ethics do build a way to lead a better life. Ethics serve as a set of rules that help us to make a decision with full conscience. We all learn about ethics from our family, friends, religious beliefs, and the society in which we grow. One’s culture is the foundation of the his or her ethical beliefs and highly influences the way of life. Culture determines how we interact with each other, appropriate or inappropriate behavior, and how we communicate.
I was born and brought up in India and came to USA for pursuing my master’s degree in Accounting. The western culture here in USA has a lot of similarities and differences as compared to the Indian culture. Having made friends coming from different parts of the world was a great experience for me. I got to learn a lot about the American, Chinese, Russian, Middle East, and Mexican culture. Different cultures have different rules of conduct which forms a basis for determining their ethical standards. Cultural ethics generally deal with values, integrity or even religion.
India is a religiously diverse nation in the world where people following Hinduism, Islam and Christianity live in harmony. Similarly, America is also a land of diversity with people belonging to different religion, society and cultures blend together. The striking difference I observed in these two cultures was that the Indian culture is more collectivist whereas American culture is more individualistic. Usually, Indians value their families more than their work. In the U.S., people are more self-reliant and are encouraged to pursue their own personal interests with less regard for the others. The hierarchical order is so inviolate that employees will accept and follow orders from superiors even when they know the orders are incorrect. It is common in the U.S. for employees to address their managers by their first name, and to be able to communicate directly without going through the entire organizational hierarchy.
