What are views on the relevance of Nyerere’s philosophy of education based on education for self-reliance and education for liberation towards academically oriented university education?
Table 2 presents the distribution of responses on a likert scale on the perceived relevance of Nyerere’s philosophy of education based on education for self-reliance and education for liberation. The codes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 corresponded to Strongly Disagree (SD), Disagree (D), Neutral (N), Agree (A) and Strongly Agree (SA) respectively. From table 2, it is evident that all the items scored more than 50%. Aspects of cognitive domain such as; students should find out information from a variety of sources themselves (62.6%), lecturer being a guide (midwife) during learning (79.2%), encouraging problem solving approaches (66.2%) and lecture halls should be a place where ideas are freely expressed (59.6%) were agreed upon by respondents. Features of psychomotor domain such as; assessment to consider both academic abilities and the work done for the learning institution and community (78.6%), learners to be prepared for both white-collar and blue collar jobs (67.25%), Practical subjects should be emphasized in the curriculum (70.2%), trained teachers to improvise some teaching media to make teaching more effective (62.6%) and education should be a liberating process that increases human freedom and make learners creators (66.6%) were also concurred with. Education is a topic that can be explored in many ways. Education is looked at in depth by both Richard Rodriguez in his essay, “The Achievement of Desire”, and by Paulo Freire in his essay, “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education.” After reading both essays, one can make some assumptions about different methods of education and exactly by which method Rodriguez was taught. The types of relationships Rodriguez had with his teachers, family and in life were affected by specific styles of education.
This paper is my personal educational philosophy statement. When referring to the “banking” concept of education, Freire wrote “Knowledge is a gift bestowed by those who consider themselves knowledgeable upon those whom they consider to know nothing”. The relationship between the teacher and the student can be associated with two different methods of learning. Paulo Freire suggests the “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education”, in which the teacher “fills the account” of the student with information and knowledge they have (318). Freire also explains the concept of “problem posing” learning that contradicts the “banking” concept. This way helps the student become more involved with their education, and they are able to become a more well-rounded student. Our educational system in the United States is faulted, students are going to school to be educated and leave not understanding what they learned, or why they learned it at all. Students ask teachers often “Why do we have to learn this?” and the teacher’s respond by saying “You need to learn this because it will help you in the future.” While learning basic math and terminology will help students in the future it will not encourage us to want to know more about the world we live in. In Paulo Freire’s “The Banking Concept of Education,” he talks about what is wrong with the current state of our education, as well as a solution to the problem our educational system faces today. Education is a very important factor in each and every single persons life, if we see that our educational system is failing us we should want to find a solution.
There are several different concepts surrounding the topic of education but most problematic is in regards to the aims of education within society. With several aims proposed by educational philosophers there is confusion surrounding what education is for and which type of education best suits the individual. Lewis (2015) posed that education promotes student learning and potential as well as fostering of community and self esteem within a school environment. Overall education is the defining product of good citizens in contemporary society, with diverse cultures, social norms and political standpoints. Liberal, vocational and wellbeing education will be discussed throughout arguing that a combined approach to education is most relevant within modern society. The ethical obligations for teachers within education will also be discussed.
Education is inevitable. It is all around us because we can learn from virtually anything. When you are cooking, dancing, talking or any other activity you have actually had to learn several things to be able to do them. In the educational perspective, I am a pragmatist and I tend to follow after Dewey's footsteps. The concept of Pragmatism is one that developed in the 20th century. My philosophy is based on the idea that learning should involve real-life situations. Learning becomes more concrete to a student when they apply it to real-life situations, as where learning things that do not connect to them has more of an abstract sense. In order for a society to function, individuals must be productive members of that society. This is accomplished through education. The philosophy of education is determined by society. As society changes so does the concept of education.
The learning experience should be that of a collective nature where students are able to indiscriminately relate to the information, re-teach the information and have a balanced incorporation of all the learning centers in society; including the home and the church. The goal of this incorporation is to create a balanced learning environment that facilitates holistic development in the young mind. As professionals entrusted with the shaping of young minds, teachers must facilitate learning and personal, spiritual, ethical and academic development. My philosophy for education is a multi-part philosophy that encapsulates the idea of holistic and inclusive learning. The philosophy caters for the overall shaping and development of the young mind and includes aspects of balanced training, incorporated teachings and it generally focuses on training students to become teachers.

In the field of education there could arise many philosophical ideas of each individual teacher. Many of the past philosophies have been and still are used in today’s education programs, such as the Socratic method. My philosophy will also contain some of the many philosophies of the past and possibly the future. I will state the nature of students, the nature of knowledge, the purpose of public education, method, and curriculum according to my own philosophies, which also may be based the philosophical ideas of previous individuals.
When understanding education there are many different ways which the purpose of education may be applied and defined. My personal philosophy of education is, 'educators must nurture/guide students within the academic field, to that the aims, goals and results during this task of educating or being educated are achieved '. This philosophy is used to understand that both teachers and students play an integral role in education. Academic performance, classroom methods/practices and also meeting the requirements of both the senior secondary Australian Curriculum Framework and the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers Framework are examples of these roles. This essay will discuss in detail how my personal philosophy of education, reflects on the role of teachers and learners, the aim of education and the methods and practices used in the classroom. Jean Jacques Rousseau, Paulo Freire, Locke, and Plato/Socrates are the four theorists that shall be used within this essay, to support claims and justify statements regarding this philosophy. John Dewey and A.S Neil are two non-supporting theorists that shall be used in contrast to justify this philosophy.
