Texas Senate District 25 is currently occupied by incumbent Donna Campbell. This district is considered one of most heavily gerrymandered districts in Texas, stretching from north San Antonio to South Austin. Campbell has held office since 2012 after defeating the incumbent in a runoff primary race. Though Campbell won the general election in 2012 by 31.2% points and 2014 by 33.4%, there is an expected GOP backlash that could bring her large wins to something reachable by Edward Kling. Since this is a nonpresidential election Steven Kling would need around 120,000 votes, depending on turnout, to reach 51% and take the district. Kling’s main issues in this race are education, veteran support and restoring local control, much of which he …show more content…
As a decorated combat veteran, having served 11 years, his stance on veterans and their health services upon returning from combat has a lot of credibility. Focusing on the care and future health of veterans in Texas as well as being critical of over medicating by the VA could earn him votes from the 64,000 veterans in this district. According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs about a third of this population is 65+; meaning that they are more likely to vote but in order to GOTV they will need paid media, likely in the form of mail pieces and broadcast television. Should Campbell focus on his stance on healthcare and women’s rights, he could lose a large portion of republicans willing to cross party lines. Women’s access to family planning and abortions is a very divisive issue between the parties and could easily be an issue that defines a voter’s party ID. Within this topic he also difficulty ahead in the large portion of Texans that remain uninsured. Since this will be Kling’s first elected office it will be difficult to directly connect him to the Affordable Care Act but his support of it could also injure his republican sway votes. As a democrat, support of a woman’s right to choose is something he will have to stand up for should Campbell attack him for his stance, Supporting this right may be divisive but framing it as an issue of equality and rights may decrease the backlash from pro-lifers on Kling’s swing
We are proud to introduce the next governor of the great State of Texas, Ms. Jane “Bitzi” Johnson Miller. She is a staunch Conservative Republican whose proud Texan traditions are deep rooted here in the Lone Star State. A native Texan who grew up in West Texas, she comes from a great line of proud Texans including former Governor Joe “Big Daddy” Johnson. Ms. Miller attended Harvard and earned a Master’s in Business Administration. In this difficult and uncertain time of economic recession, she has
In contrast, the Texas State Senate has its focus on the Upper House of the Texas State Legislature. The Senate consists of 31 members, who represent single-member districts settled in Texas. The latest studies confirm that each individual district has an average of 806.000 civilians. Each term a member serves last for four years. Similarly, to the House, the senate has no term limits. The person who leads the Senate is the Lieutenant Governor of Texas. The Lieutenant Governor is considered to many to be more influential. In 2013, the 83rd Legislative Session occurred and six new senators were added to the
He represented House District 70. After completing 10 years in the House of Representatives, he was elected to the Texas State Senate where he represented Senate District 8 in both Collin and Dallas counties.
This research suggest that Sid Miller is a Conservative Republican and has been in Texas politics since the early 2000’s, Miller recently ran for Texas Agriculture Commissioner and was voted into office in November of 2014. Sid Miller is a born Texan and has very strong traditional roots which can be seen in his political views. Being a conservative and having very strong roots has shaped his idea on abortion which he addressed while being a member in the Texas House of Representatives and also his crusades for more freedoms that may be enjoyed by individuals. Having grown up in rural Texas and being a multi-time rodeo champion Miller sympathizes for laboring farmers raising cattle or growing produce and has carried on things such as eliminating
Senator John Cornyn has been in public office for 28 years. Cornyn is described as a “powerful voice for conservative values in Washington” (Biography:John Cornyn , n.d.). Cornyn’s liberal and conservative voting scores seem to prove this statement to be
As we all know, Texas is a conservative state, meaning it holds to its traditional beliefs, laws, and values; it also is very cautious about any kind of change, commonly related to politics or religion. This, unquestionably makes me think Texas voters would not support this idea, making it impossible to happen. Of course, this is not an easy decision, principally because it involves modifying the Texas Constitution, yet I consider this to be a “necessary evil,” meaning that the idea might not be supported or accepted by everyone, but still might be imperative for the development of not only our state but our society.
In order to fully grasp how Texas’ Republican Party has progressed throughout the years, one must also have an understanding of the history of the state. The first thirteen colonies of the United States were under British control, a circumstance that Texas was not a part of. Even though many other countries tried to control Texas, they were not able to do so for long periods of time, due in part, to the independent nature of the people throughout the state. Because of the constant threats Texans faced, such as invading armies from foreign countries, the struggles of living out west, amongst many others, the people became incredibly independent, freedom loving, and extremely hard working. At the start of Texas’ history Texans did all of the
The midterm elections in Texas were something very big this year. This year was the year that the current governor, Rick Perry, would not seek a fourth term. Greg Abbott, real name, Gregory Wayne Abbott, won the midterm election for governor and will take office in January 20, 2015.
The state house of Texas requires a person to be a U.S. citizen, 21 old or over, 2 years resident of Texas and 1year resident prior to the elections. Watching over the past, the current representative for state house Matt Rinaldi is a republican. In 2012, the district was represented by Bennett Ratliff who was also a republican. Matt Rinaldi is proving his strong presence by winning the seat for two times in the election of 2014 and 2016. This shows that the republicans have very strong voter population in this district. Running for the House, I believe that my ideologies regarding the political values are more democrats which would make it harder to win in this district. However, looking to the general election of 2012, President Obama who was a democrat received more votes from this district. This shows that the voters of this district have a mixed kind of political
Since it is gerrymandered, the issues deal with representation of people. The leaders made it that way seeking their own benefit. Despite having 28.1%, Hispanics are not represented well in the committee. Asian also don’t have any representation. Representation is done based on the political advantage. They cut the district boundaries in such a way that it fosters their business rather than people’s sake.
There are women in the Texas Legislature, but they are underrepresented to the point where they could almost be ignored by their fellow male counterparts, that could easily outvote them in legislation that has to do with things such as birth control or abortion that affect women directly. Another problem with this is that they may also not take into account these minority groups, and push for legislation that favors Anglo-American males. The Texas Legislature only has 140 days to get everything that they need to get done, and
In February of 2014, former Vermont Governor and Democratic National Committee chair, Howard Dean, sat down with hosts Gary Polland and David Jones for an interview. The 26 minute interview gives the audience insight into Texas politics, and Dean’s beliefs that Texas, a red state, will turn blue in the foreseeable future in order to satiate Texan’s demands for change.
For example, he voted in favor of a bill that would authorize concealed carrying of firearms in public places, was rated 93 percent by the National Rifle Association, and so it can be assumed that he would not support gun control legislation. He has been given a rating of zero percent by both the Arizona Right to Choose and the Stonewall Democrats of Arizona for his conservative votes and his views on abortion and same sex marriage issues. From this it can be inferred that he will be conservative when voting on marriage and family issues (votesmart.org, Andy Biggs).
This district consists of ten county region central and East of Texas. Schwerter has been a Senator since 2013, and is a member of a Human Services committee. He is a Chairman of the Senate committee on the Health and Human Services; this committee is “responsible of setting public health policies and regulations for the state (insert citation)”. Schwertner has a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy at UT of Austin and a M.D. at UT Medical Branch in Galveston. A news article called “The Best and Worst Legislators 2015” This article lists several of the legislators in the year 2015 and listed Schwertner as one of the worst legislator. The article described the legislator like a “tyrant, limiting public debate and cutting people off (Grieder, Mann, Ratcliffe, Sweany, Texas Monthly Staff, 2015)”. It gives examples like claiming that Schwertner “blocked the texting while driving bill though he voted for it (Grieder, Mann, Ratcliffe, Sweany, Texas Monthly Staff, 2105)”. The article basically bashed the legislator and didn’t give any credit for the good things he did do while a legislator. Schwertner’s bill was “engrossed on March 3, 2017 and is in fifty percent progression; on March 16, 2017, was received from the Senate. Twenty Republicans and one Democrat sponsors the bill. The bill states that “women are allowed to have an abortion if an only if the women is at risk of dying, or if the unborn child has severe irreversible brain damage (Schwertner, 2016)”. The bill declares that “hair or blood, blood components (including plasma), blood derivatives, or blood reagents is not included as a human organ (Schwertner, 2016)”. If a person buys fetal tissues for use of research without any permission or license they will be fined for “no more than $10,000(Schwertner, 2016).” If law is violated the person will go “state jail (Schwertner,
In the following documentary, “Last Man Standing: Politics Texas Style” this film is taken place from a behind-the-scenes point of view that shows a very closely fought race in the Texas, There was an ongoing race for the House District 45. Not only did you see the ongoing race but also got to witness the governor’s race, which is Tony Sanchez against Governor Rick Perry. Also another witness Ron Kirk running for senate in Texas against John Cornyn. Overall numerous comments are proclaimed by local and nation figures in the documentary about discussion’s on politics, which really had a very intuitive background to an in depth side from running campaigns to strategies that some candidates used to attract voter to vote for them. In the documentary it primarily focused on two specific candidates running for The House District 45. First, you had Rick Green, a thirty-one year old incumbent Republican Legislator and a conservative leader that is running for reelection as House District 45. He had served two terms during the republican holder generation. Most people notice right from the beginning that he is well more experience candidate for the election, thus making people more openly trust him that he can manage the position of in which he is running for. This not only makes him more experienced through the people’s perspective but also through his campaign style and debate appearances. Another appealing interest that people see is that he is a Christian which people pick up
