The implementation of the SET plan is increasingly valuable given the current social climate. This younger generation, that is students currently completing schooling, have been born during one of the most politically and economically unstable times in recent history. These students have not known life before the increased security measures that were enacted following the “war on terrorism”, they have often not had financial security or been raised in a setting where the “nuclear family” seemed to be a realistic reflection of the lives they and their friends are living. Following research into the effect September 11th 2001 had on the millennial generation, one young student stated, “We don’t really know what it [was] like [before 9/11]. We …show more content…
Furthermore, these two subjects offer practical knowledge that can be further developed in bridging courses or at university, if Sally felt that option would lend her better in the future. The Study Area Specification (SAS) Guide for English Communication supports this, stating, “the concept of language and literacy as social practice is fundamental to this study area specification…” meaning that the purpose of this course is to teach students effective strategies to “utilise, manipulate and critically reflect on a range of texts in the contexts of work, community and leisure,” (Queensland Curriculum & Assessment Authority [QCAA], 2004a, p.1). These skills seem invaluable to Sally, who has illustrated an interest in creative arts, specifically fashion, an industry renowned for being socially adept and reliant on current cultural norms and opinions (Blaszczyk, 2006; Hemphill & Suk, 2009). Similarly, the SAS guide for Prevocational Maths outlines the offered course as being an avenue that “helps students improve their numeracy by building their confidence and success in making meaning of mathematics,” (QCAA, 2004b, p. 1). Sally has shown little interest in pursuing a higher level of education, which would often require an Authority strand of maths, and thus building confidence …show more content…
Within these syllabi, Sally will be awarded various certificates to contribute points towards her QCE, but will also be gaining knowledge on the industry she is currently interested in. Fashion as a career choice is extremely demanding due to its competitiveness, and it’s better for Sally to become versed in the nature of this field before seeking greater commitments in the future when she may not necessarily have the same level of support she does currently. Additionally, social research conducted in areas of “unequal distribution of educational resources” has found that the social environment and climate “plays an important role in stimulating individual work motivation” (Chang, Chuang & Bennington, 2010, p. 937). Creative teaching and learning also promotes an active relationship with the subject matter, prompting students to think and learn willingly. With Sally studying to her strengths, she is less likely to disengage when the coursework becomes difficult. Sally’s remarks regarding her current grades suggest that she is more likely to become disengaged due to self-focused rumination (van Randenborgh, Huffmeier, LeMoult & Joormann, 2010), that is, her inability to meet the somewhat unattainable standards she may hold herself
Education means something different for everyone. According to Mike Rose, “a good education helps us make sense of the world and find our way in it” (33). The truth to this is that education affects us in every aspect of our lives. Rose emphasizes the value in the experience of education beyond the value of education for the purpose of custom or intelligence; he explores the purpose of going to school in terms of how he defines himself and his personal growth in the stages of his academic career. In Rose’s exploration of the purpose of school, he also reflects on his personal experiences and how those experiences gave him tools that are applicable for his daily life. Mike Rose’s Why School?: Reclaiming Education for All of Us persuades his audience of the importance of education beyond the classroom, emphasizing how those experiences become crucial to one’s personal growth and potential.
This is an informational article. It explains the lack of motivation many first-generation students face. Its purpose is to informed
This paper also supports the self-fashioning article by Keohane. Self-fashioning builds the character, personality, and focus on the student. A self-fashioned student is more likely to succeed in life in whichever line of specialization he chooses. Likewise, I disagree with Conard on the point that innovation and technology are more likely to bring success to the student. From experience, people who know their personality and character are able to use in their skills, time and education to be the best in whichever field, whether in technology and innovation or humanities. In my view, success and failure are not a factor of chosen line of specialization rather, it is a factor of hard work and determination to create a change. Self-fashioning is more fundamental and basic education, like authority, and intelligence and it is determined by how people deal with small and basic things in life. Things like cleaning, washing, and taking care of oneself are more important that education when it comes to self-fashioning.
London then takes inspiration from the quote by Mark Twain:‘I will not let my schooling interfere with my education’, already came with the idea of school is set up for failure. London states “Homework is stressful, but when you go home every day and your home is work, you don't want to pick up any assignments.” Many students, both at the high school and at the college level, often have many out of school activities to attend to, such as family, jobs, and other personal interest. London’s increase in pace also emphasizes that importance of “your home is work” should not be taken lightly. London

Wayne Dyer once said “doing what you love is the cornerstone of having abundance in your life”. Ever since I was a little girl, fashion has always been a very important part of my life. However, while most young girls were busy designing Barbie’s next outfit, I was enthusiastically trying to figure out the best way to market and sell Barbie to my friends. This habit did not end during my childhood years; rather it followed me through high school. I firmly believe that being passionate about your career can add much happiness and depth to your life. By attending FIT I can bring and take away positive ideas and qualities.
Education has always been an important part of our sustainable society in which everyone plays a role. The purpose of the education system is to provide a way for students to learn and gain knowledge. The current education system focuses more on evaluations rather than teaching, which creates a stressful and unpleasant high school experience. Alfie Kohn’s essay, How Not to Get into College: The Preoccupation with Preparation describes the difficulties and purposeless school practices students face when preparing themselves for life beyond high school.
As a child, I have always been a visually observatory person. Patterns, textiles, and fashion have always been high interests of mine. My childhood consisted of many Barbie dolls as toys, and it wasn't the Barbie dolls that I wanted to play with, but the clothes that I loved to collect and interchange between the dolls. Creating different outfits for the dolls made me feel as if I was making my own mark in fashion. As I grew older, begging my mother to purchase fashion magazines like Vogue, Elle, and Harpers Bazaar were typical and became expected. While flipping through the pages of fashion magazines, I was enthralled while examining the latest trends from celebrities and models. This is what influenced me to want to work in the fashion industry.
The circumstances surrounding September 11th 2001 seem to be too much for a young child to grasp. At the age of eleven, I remember this day so vividly, but at such a young age I was unable to understand everything that was taking place before me. Although this day did not affect me directly, with time I have come to understand that situations as this one affects a nation as a whole. It seemed to be my first exposure to war in which I could remember. Beforehand, I knew nothing about what terrorist were and my country fighting in war seemed to be the least of my worries. Over time, I would learn more about the two. Today, as I grow into an adult I see the effects of current wars on children. I work in an environment where I come in close contact with children whose parents serve in the military. Although many of these children have no idea about the purpose of war or the outcome it may bring, they do know it as the single thing that takes their parents away for months at a time. I am mindful of the different reactions of these children. The stability in their life is altered with the absence of one parent being gone for long periods of time. The stability is what helps to build a strong family, and Garbarino states:
9/11 was a tragic event that also opened the eyes of American citizens. It showed that America is not invincible and how the corporations can’t solve a lot of problems like hunger, poverty, and war around the world. It was an event that made Americans come together and stop depending on wealthy corporations and businesses that take advantage of poor schools and universities for advertisement. Instead, they started depending on themselves and on the true heroes: policemen, public safety officers, and more. Also, 9/11 gave a chance for educators to seize the opportunity of redefining education. As a final point, interdependent citizenship and civic education is very crucial
While reading Too Cool for School by Ellis Cose I have became aware of various aspects of my ‘schooling’ experience. I realized that I may not have had the best schooling experience, but I never pushed up against the system to get any better. Throughout my life I have attended over 10 schools some very high end others bottom of the barrel. Like Cose, I always knew my intellectual abilities, but I was always so dissatisfied with my situation I didn't make the best of it. Instead of soaking up as much knowledge as possible and making a lesson out of my situation I became complacent. I started to slack off and allow myself to become stagnant to what I knew my abilities were. I allowed myself to be a product of my environment when I should I have
Youngsters who pay more attention to fashion are less attentive to their studies and when it comes to devoting time to their academic career, they seem to be less concerned. This very
Traditionally, mathematics and language-based subjects have been seen as occurring on opposite sides of a great divide. However, in recent years teachers have realised the importance of talk across the curriculum including mathematics. This is supported by the DfEE (1999a, p11) who state that ‘high quality interactive teaching is oral, interactive and lively. It is a two way process in which pupils are expected to play an interactive role by answering questions, contributing points to discussions, and explaining and demonstrating their methods to the class.’ The recent Cambridge review reinforced the message that ‘teachers
Self-initiated learning is a key aspect of Rogers’ beliefs for a lasting education. He notes that when a student is fully engaged with the subject matter, they are more likely to retain the significant information they have been taught. When developing a curricular activity to represent Rogers’ experiential learning theory, we must remember to assemble a curriculum where the student can reflect on their work. As a secondary school art classroom focuses on work developed by the student, the assignments are often structured with a curriculum created by the educator. Assignments and art pieces are put in place to help the student learn the foundations of art and art history. Although students create the art pieces, they are often confined to the outline created by the teacher.
When planning unit outcomes, the Australian Curriculum, local context and needs of individual students are considered. This ensures relevant stakeholder interests are balanced and meaningful outcomes developed (Dowden, 2013). The Australian Curriculum, guided by the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians, outlines the official mathematics curricula to ensure students are taught the required knowledge and skills needed is consulted initially (Dowden, 2013). This is important as the Australian Curriculum has been planned with future educational and employment goals
