For decades athletic coaches have preached to their teams the value of working together as one cohesive unit in order to achieve the desired goal: a victory. Players have endured countless hours of practice, learned their specific role on the team, studied offensive and defensive plays, and most importantly, were taught to trust the fact that the athlete next to him or her will fulfill their assignment on any given play. In football, when all eleven players work together in harmony towards a common goal, the likelihood of the team experiencing success on any given play, while not guaranteed, is vastly enhanced. It is because of this fact that coaches of team sports are oft to say “there is no I in team” (Anonymous, n. d.) as a means of emphasizing the importance of group unity and discouraging rogue actions. However, there are those key moments in a game when a single player does make the difference in the outcome of the contest. Still using the football scenario, it could be a running back reversing course in order to get into the open field; a quarterback crazily scrambling in order to make a pass; a linebacker causing a fumble; or a defensive back intercepting the ball. All of the aforementioned situations have the potential of turning the tide of the game and granting the team the win, but each event was the result of one player’s effort. Sport’s are an aspect of life that affect societies across the globe. Athletics affect everyone's life, whether that be playing the sport, watching games, or hearing about a sporting event. There is a big difference between playing an individual sport and players relying on their own athletic abilities versus a team sport when members of the team rely on their teammates to complete each individual's specific responsibility to reach the team's goal. Team sports bring people together in countless ways, and they teach many life skills for the athletes that participate in them. Teamwork is a key skill that everyone should have installed in them at a young age.The brain of a child is like a sponge, they absorb everything and use it in the future. Playing football is not an individual sport unlike competitive swim or boxing, when playing a sport heavy contact or not as a team a child learns to work with others to achieve a common goal of winning or advancing. Children become cooperative and have the ability to collaborate with others making them more resourceful and beneficial in any real life situation. According to live strong representative and author of article “Benefits of Teamworks in Sports” Wade Harle, stated “ Teamwork in sports can help give participants stronger communication skills and teach them to work better with others. Additional advantages to teamwork in sports are learning to deal with conflict and varieties of different ideas within a team.” As the young child grows and prospers into a young adult having the teamwork ability and characteristic will only gain them the upper hand when applying for jobs, working on projects and in life commitments and relationships.
This study focused on the importance of leadership among the athletes themselves, their peer leaders. “The results showed that the majority of team task (65%), social (57%), and external (79%) leaders occupied a formal position on their team.” (Loughead, Hardy, & Eys, 2006, p. 142). These leadership functions have different behavioral characteristics provided to the team members. The task leader helps to focus the team on the goal at hand and helps with decision making within the team. This may be the player on the team who calls the plays, the team captain. The research indicated that it was important for team members to elect their captains and other leaders. The social leader brings cohesiveness and harmony to the team. He encourages and rallies the players to get together and get involved. The final leadership function, external leaders help promote the team in the community and help organize fund raising. In addition, leadership within the team, through peers and other group members was a factor in the overall success of the team. The features of effective team performance are set out in Brian Tuckman’s phases of team development theory, ‘Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing.’ This outlines the phases that a team will go through in order to become effective and reach maturity. At the ‘Forming’ stage of team development individual roles and responsibilities are unclear and each member of the team is concerned to avoid conflict with each other. From this point the team will go through the ‘Storming’ phase which is when they start to conflict as individuals put forward ideas which will be challenged by others in a bid to gain power and position over others. After this the ‘Norming’ phase follows and it is at this point that individual roles are defined and accepted
As children we are taught to include everyone because it is not nice to leave people out. If this is a practice we are taught from a very early age, why is it okay to change that just to win a sporting event? There is an understanding that when you are in middle/high school, there will be tryouts for a sporting team. The children who are good enough, make the team, those who are not, get cut. With the understanding that some players skill level is higher than others, the playing time may not be the same. With that being said, if you are good enough to make the team, then why would you not be good enough to play for your team at least once every game? We all know the benefits of being on a team, learning to cooperate, working together to achieve a goal, helps improve for communication skills and allows youth to exercise. But what if you make this team and don’t ever get to play, are you still seeing these benefits to being on a team? If you tryout and make a school team, then all players should be allowed to play in and participate in every game.
In high school many kids often choose not to participate in extra curricular activities saying that there pointless or that only a certain type of person would do something like play football, or join the chess club. While this type of thinking may get some people through school and through life, can it really be looked at as being a healthy lifestyle? Today sports have proven to be a healthy outlet for students, in dealing with stress in the classroom at home and among their peers.
