The Vice Presidential Debate

Another four years another presidential debate. Before I go on to the current debates let me state a few facts about past ones. The Lincoln and Douglas debate was in important because it started Lincoln presidential career. The Debates lasted from August 21 -- October 15. There where seven of them, with two days to two weeks in between. Each debate lasted three hours; first candidate spoke for one hour; the second for one and a half hours; the first replying for a half hour. Candidates alternated going first. The topics involved where primarily slavery and the Union. Other important debates were the '48 and '57. They were the only debates before 1960; there were no presidential debates between 1960 and 1976. In

Conflict is inevitable in any personal relationship or among members of any group. While we encounter many types of conflict in our lifetime, we often look for ways to avoid conflict. So, why do we run away from dealing with our conflict? It is often because many of us fear the conflict will escalate into a situation we will not be able to sustain. “As conflicts escalate, they go through certain incremental transformations. Although these transformations occur separately on each side, they affect the conflict as a whole because they are usually mirrored by the other side. It doesn’t take a political expert to see that the 2000 presidential election between Bush and Gore was extremely illegitimate. This can be observed through the recount incident which took place in the state of Florida. Many people, especially seniors, felt that they had not voted for the right candidate, which was due to a confusing ballot setup. The ballots were called “butterfly ballots”. These ballots, as one could imagine, had candidates on either side which the voter could choose from. Seems simple enough, right? Unfortunately, that was not the case. The Republicans and Democrats would have you believe that America is perfect besides the other party. There's no doubt that there are some serious issues with the politics of this country, but one of my significant concerns isn’t the feud between the conservatives and the liberals, it's the Electoral College. In my opinion, the reason that politics is so utterly bungled is the inherent issues that stem from the election process. The Electoral College devalues votes and the voices of the individuals so in my opinion, removing it should be a bipartisan issue.

The two speeches that were discussed in Germany about the berlin wall are similar but also different from each other. John f. Kennedy’s speech focuses on how he has never heard of a wall being put up to keep the people of Germany a divided continent. He also states that his people in his country take pride in being able to meet the people of West Berlin. To add on he also says “I know of no town, no city, that has been besieged for 18 years that still lives with the vitality and the force, and the hope and the determination of the city of West Berlin”. With that statement it lets people know that berlin is a strong and determined country. John demands freedom and in one of the lines from his speech he says “Freedom is indivisible, and

During the second Presidential Debate, which was televised on October 9, 2016, I was able to detect many logical fallacies within the arguments of both candidates. For example, when Donald Trump was first asked about the controversial tape that contained footage of him disrespecting and admitting to sexually assaulting women, he avoided this question by attempting to divert attention from this issue. Instead of concretely answering the question, Donald Trump briefly apologized, and then blatantly attempted to ignore the issue by talking about Isis “chopping people’s heads,” and randomly describing all the horrid things that Isis is doing. The United States Presidential elections are often events that captivate and interest a number of people around the world. The 2000 U.S. presidential election was particularly notable for more than one reason. Certainly, the fact that an election year in the year 2000, the marking of the next millennium and next century, is significant in of itself. In addition, there were a number of critical issues facing the candidates in this election, as with any election. The role, presence, and influence of the United States media were additional factors that heightened the tension of the 2000 presidential election. The election itself was fraught with controversy. The Supreme Court had to be involved and render a ruling with respect to accusation of fraudulent vote counting. Overall, the 2000 United States Presidential Election is an election that is remembered for controversy, polarization of the American public, as well as issues of confusion and mistrust between the American public and the American government.

In 1791, the Bill of Rights was drafted by congress after arguments ensued over whether the Constitution would uphold the rights of the American people. James Madison proposed twelve Amendments so to limit the power of government, allowing for a more stately and locally controlled system but, only ten were ratified. The ten amendments to be ratified were created to give American citizens freedoms they did not have under British rule. However, in current society the freedoms protected in the Bill of Rights are conflicted by the federal government and the confliction are justified as being beneficial for the general public. The altered interpretations of the Bill of Rights have forsaken freedom of speech, allowed unjustified search and seizure,

But the race turned again before the end of September, when Bush went on two popular daytime television shows and Gore was hit by the media and his GOP opponents for exaggerating and embellishing stories and anecdotes. Suddenly, Gore was again on the defensive over the issue of character. The polls turned toward Bush, who received a surprising boost from the first presidential debate and then for Dick Cheney's performance in the lone debate between the vice presidential candidates. Bush did even better in the second presidential debate, and while most political insiders thought Gore did better in the third debate, television viewers split between Bush and Gore when asked to pick the winner. So, as Election Day nears, the roller-coaster presidential race looked much as it once did -- headed for a close contest and an uncertain outcome.

The year 2000 held one of the most controversial elections of all time. Al Gore, Vice President for eight years, against George W. Bush, son of former President H. W. Bush. Both Gore and Bush sought to distance themselves from their normal parties, to make a unique approach to their political ideas. The 2000 United States presidential election was one of the closest presidential elections in history. A month of recounts and court challenges followed, culminating in the Supreme Court case Bush v. Gore. Following the court’s 5-4 decision, George W. Bush was declared the winner over Vice President Al Gore by 537 votes in the state of Florida. Domestic issues as opposed to foreign policy dominated the campaign. Key issues were prescription drug prices, campaign finance reform, Social Security, and education. Each candidate claimed their economic plan would reduce the deficit. Bush parodied himself as a “compassionate conservative.”

A Bush vs. Gore election, a completely unfair and illegitimate political race. Fighting for the final battle in Florida, winner claim to be the next president of the United States. With Bush’s brother to be the governor, every news station and political of Florida Palm Beach County, in Florida, home to many older and possibly more senile people. When voting for the next President, many people have believed to have incorrectly voted and claimed to have voted for someone they didn’t choose to. Gore lost the machine count, however many people were demanding a re-vote since they feel as if their votes were not properly filled out and/ or counted for the wrong candidate. Bush was leading by 15,000, however there was multiple mix ups with the numbers

It was a great experience to watch vice presidential debates as it was different from presidential debates. Also, was engaging to see what will be different from presidents to vice presidents. As I watched vice president debates after third presidential debate, I can say that topics were same. They were discussing topics about immigration, Syria, Russia, economy and education. I did not like that vice presidents interrupted each other a lot of times, but overall, it was a very cognitive and open debate.

First and foremost, thank you for being here in support of the student government association. I want to thank our amazing dean Edina for encouraging me to run for vice president of SGA. Many people have asked me why I am running for vice president. Would you ask a fifth grader if he is going to go to the 6th grade? No right because they have to keep going to the next level. Ever since I came to the University of Bridgeport, I constantly looked for ways to become more involved and to keep having an impact in the university. Every year, here at the University of Bridgeport I am involved in something new. Whether it's being an OL, President of a Club or even starting a chapter/club which is known as the food recovery network, with the help of my peers. The food recovery network have recovered more than 300 pounds of food that would otherwise have been thrown out.

As harsh and extreme as it may seem I believe that it is just. When our political leaders run for office they show what the party wants them to see. they show no emotion and no remorse for what they are really passionate about. I believe the republican and democratic debates are a chance to see what our political leaders are really passionate about. I like the heated debates because again, it shows what the political leader is willing to fight for and believe in, even if Donald Trump makes a few harsh comments! It shows he is “hungry” for his beliefs. There is a difference between showing your beliefs with a strong passion and picking a fight with a political figure to gain power. The line is hard to fine at times and is often crossed. A fine example of that would be Donald trump’s extremely rude remarks towards Senator John McCain (New York Times). It was clear that Trump’s intensions was to pick a fight with Senator McCain to gain some type of power. I believe that line needs to be firmly drawn and should not be infringed upon for respect and professionalism between the Political
