Write the Vision and Make it Plan On Monday, October 5, 2015, I spent time in a data meeting with Mrs. Johnson is the principal of a middle school. The purpose of this meeting was to gain information and strategies on how to effectively implement data within the building. During the workshop, Mrs. Johnson provided us with a vast amount of information that could change one’s vision and process of how to effectively run a school based on data. When reflecting on this meeting I have summed up my experience into two categories: Own it and Inspect what you expect. Own It Mrs. Johnson stated that the instruction within the building is driven by data and that the data is what drives the instructions. As the principal, it is important that you own up to the things that are going on within your school. One of the biggest areas that principal must own up to is accepting responsibility for the data. If data is used effectively in the classroom and within the building there will be evidence of success. At West Cary Middle, Mrs. Johnson feels that it is important that the data is shared with everyone. When the data is shared with all stakeholders everyone becomes aware of the information and the implications it has on all students. Once the data was shared with everyone in the building Mrs. Johnson implemented her 10-day Treatment Plan (this is really a continuous plan). The major emphasis in education for the 21st century is on data driven accountability measured by student performance on standardized testing. National and state expectations require students to demonstrate mastery of curriculum objectives. The district leaders rely heavily on data basis that gather sort and produce usable data to help in the decision making process. Like the individuals in the cases study, leader can become comfortable with the data without checking the validity and the reliability of the data. If the data is coming from MSIS database, which in managed, by Mississippi Department of Education, it is often taken for granted that the information is valid. However, data can be received from testing companies, educational assistance companies and district personnel. Therefore as the educational leaders make decisions they have to consistently check the source of the data. The leadership team should make sure that all data that is being used is valid and reliable. They should also ensure that each department knows what the other departments are doing and their efforts are aligned vertically and
The article, Code Red: The Danger of Data-Driven Instruction, the author, Susan Newman provides ineffective uses of data-driven instruction. The author highlights the use of worksheets, spreadsheets, and teaching to the test strategies as weak time consumers that detract from the active learning and classroom engagement. Data-driven instruction is a tool to guide education to increase student performance with researched based practices, rigorous teaching modalities, and differentiated individualized instruction.
When developing a good five year career plan I had to ask myself where, I wanted to be in five years. This question would be critical for my future.
