Most people would argue that social media has a negative effect on our society, but Josh Rose, "a chief creative officer at Webster Shandwick," believes otherwise. (173) Josh Rose's essay, How Social Media is Having a Positive Impact on Our Culture, was featured on the online source Mashable.com on February 23, 2011. Rose uses his speech to argue the reasons why social media is beneficial, mainly focusing on how it connects us together; however, Rose doesn't give much credibility or opposition. Instead, he states points from his own personal experience and beliefs with lack of fluidity.

Throughout the years the use of technology has increased, and expanded. Mass media plays a vital role in society. Mass media can be defined as any means of communication, to an extremely large group of people. Technological advancements have been extremely beneficial for prior generations, the generation we now live in, and will be for the future generations to come. Such as, providing news for the world to hear, entertainment, and much more. Some examples of media would be television, films, newspapers, and the Internet. Unfortunately along with benefits, there are disadvantages concerning gender discrimination, and sexism. Such as, women feelings forced and obligated to stay at home with their children instead of working, and the representation of beauty involving both men and women. Examples of how the media can accomplish this would be through the use of advertisements, movies, magazines, and the radio. The media has an enormous effect on people within society today.

When Marshall McLuhan coined the phrase “the medium is the message” back in 1967, we were facing a very different society than we are today. His focus was of course on the mediums of the time: radio, newsprint and television. Mark Federman, a Chief Strategist for the McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology asserts in his article, What is the Meaning of the Medium is the Message? (2004), McLuhan was not speaking directly about the medium itself. His thought process went to a deeper level. Federman “note[s] that it is not the content or use of innovation, but the change in inter-personal dynamics that the innovation brings with it” that is the issue. In a world that we can now access hundreds of thousands of bits of information in milliseconds, we can certainly see a shift in media influence. Today we can actually watch events as they unfold, whether they are events for a greater good or events of horrific acts of terrorism, technology has enabled society to be omnipresent. Melody Thompson (2011) refers to Jaron Lanier in discussing how technology shapes our relationship to itself. She notes that Lanier believes technology imposes on us its own viewpoint and that shapes our decisions. In Chapter six of Practices of Looking theorist Michael McLuhan stated during the 1960’s that “a medium is any extension of ourselves through a technological form”. He also believed that it is a way in which individuals extend their bodies in processes of communication, which despite him writing in the 1960’s is highly relevant in contemporary society. The chapter discusses how people rank modes of media in terms of importance. For instance, an article on Facebook or seen on a social networking platform may not be as highly regarded by the average viewer, as it can be perceived as not being credible. Yet, a newspaper article is often held in a higher esteem.

The advantages of having information so obtainable is that we can get information that we would like to know at the tip of our hands. Now that we have smartphones it is nice that we can look up addresses to certain places and be able to get the navigation application direct you to the location. It is nice to be able to get information that we need so easily I enjoy that it is so accessible. I constantly use the internet to look for information that I need. It can be to look up what certain person have contributed to history and how it has changed us. I also use it to find out side effects on medication or what is the medication is used to treat. This has helped me a lot at my job.

It is people-powered communication, an authentic dialogue motivated by a basic human desire to share information” (CIPD, Social Media and Employee Voice Report 2013). ‘Click’ and my message is on its way to my friend’s Facebook inbox hundred of miles away. The astonishing speed of how quick we can communicate in today’s societies, all thanks to social media. The invention of Facebook simplified everything we know about communication. We can connect to people whenever and wherever, sharing information has never been more convenient and exciting. In Shane Hipps’ Article, “ Is Facebook Killing Our Souls?,” he has no intention to impede technological advancements, instead he wants users to understand technologies with insights. According to my research, although Hipps ' points has some merits, I disagree with him because he overgeneralized the impacts that Facebook and other social media has on users’ behaviors and identities.

This essay explores the different relationships between social media platforms and the government to provide insight into the different ways the government uses media masses to further their agendas and how its good business is used for political gain. This essay also discusses the different ideologies and fallacies individuals have of the media’s role in society. This essay wasn’t written to persuade one either way, but rather to bring the important relationship to light, so with better understanding people can make wiser decisions as voters, consumers or investors.

Peggy Orenstein, an author and a contributing writer for the New York Times, on “I Tweet, Therefore I Am” she talks about how social media is distracting as from fully live in the moment. Even though the development of technology have increased the quality of life, it also brought undeniable challenges to our society.
