Professional nursing is grounded in science, education, practice and theory. Nursing theory clearly defines nursing and outlines measurable concepts and ground rules of which practice is built upon. It also facilitates in the enhancement of nursing knowledge. Nursing is flourishing the health facilities, promotion, and development of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, through diagnosis and treatment of a person’s psychological and physiological behavior, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations (American Nurses Association (ANA). Nursing theory provides the framework which guide nurses to deliver individual nursing care which improves wellness for the patient. An official illustration of nursing theory justifies, for nurses, their function and how it’s valued in the world of healthcare. Nursing theory encompasses the needs, interactions, outcomes, and humanistic perspectives of an individual and includes four levels of theory. This paper aims to focus on the work of Ida Jean Orlando, a middle-range nursing theorist, and her theory of the deliberative nursing process and will bring forth an examination of the importance of nursing theory and how it can be applied to professional nursing practice.
